Citrus x limon, el limonero, es un pequeño árbol frutal perenne que puede alcanzar más de 4 m de altura. Su fruto es el limón (del árabe ليمون , leimun), una fruta comestible de sabor ácido y extremadamente fragante que se usa en la alimentación. El limonero posee una madera con corteza lisa y madera dura y amarillenta muy apreciada para trabajos de ebanistería. Botánicamente, es una especie híbrida entre C. medica (cidro o limón francés) y C. aurantium (naranjo amargo).Aunque otros autores creen que es el resultado de diversos retrocruces entre Citrus medica y Citrus aurantifolia.
Forma una copa abierta con gran profusión de ramas, sus hojas son elípticas, coriáceas de color verde mate lustroso (5 a 10 cm), terminadas en punta y con bordes ondulados o finamente dentados.
Sus flores, comúnmente llamadas (al igual que las del naranjo) Azahares o flores de azahar, presentan gruesos pétalos blancos teñidos de rosa o violáceo en la parte externa, con numerosos estambres (20-40). Surgen aislados o formando pares a partir de yemas rojizas.
El limón es originario de Asia y fue desconocido por griegos y romanos, siendo mencionado por primera vez en el libro sobre agricultura Nabathae hacia el siglo III o IV. Su cultivo no fue desarrollado en occidente hasta después de la conquista árabe de España, extendiéndose entonces por todo el litoral mediterráneo donde se cultiva profusamente, debido a la benignidad del clima, para consumo interno y de exportación.
Su fruto, posee un alto contenido en vitamina C (501,6 mg/L) y ácido cítrico (49,88 g/L). Se utiliza para elaborar postres (tales como el arroz con leche, en este caso se usa su piel para aromatizar) o bebidas naturales como la limonada y la leche merengada, a la cual se le añade también canela. Las rodajas se usan como adorno para bebidas. Por la acidez de su jugo, se puede utilizar para potabilizar agua, agregando 4 ó 5 gotas por cada vaso de agua, y dejándolo actuar unos cuantos minutos.
