Set 483, Alpha-1 Rocket Base, was introduced in 1978 as one of Lego Space's first base buildings. It consists of 187 pieces, and between the rocket, the tanker truck, and the three minifigures, is very fun to play with. I actually had this set in childhood before giving it away, so I made sure to make this set the first infrastructure building in my vintage Lego Space collection.

Set 483 was the North American designation. In Europe, the set was designated as 920 and named Rocket Launch Pad, and it was not released until a year later in 1979.

A multi-purpose Soviet construction mech. First test units were produced in 2048. As the model became outdated, though robust and reliable in operation, a couple of dozens of Udarniks were cheaply sold to Hibernian colonists. The mechs are now being used for construction and construction-related purposes in some remote settlements. The mech can be operated by a crew of one person or remotely. It has two mechanic hands and a mini-crane at the back, both can be replaced with other construction tools.

A logical step further from the 9T9 Flounder model. Now with closed cockpit, smoother rear aero elements and new protonic engines, which are for the first time produced by Porsche itself, not provided by Futuron.

Blacktron II’s Allied Avenger (or Octopod) from 1991 enters the LEGO City!

LEGO’s best X-Wing pre-Star War license?

I’m a huge fan of Blacktron II’s use of octagon transparent neon green domes and detachable pods in their larger sets.

My younger self imagined the pods would be for atmospheric travel, with the back rockets intended for intergalactic travel/warp speed.

Pretty cool little spaceship, classic minifig with the old blockhead, and great neon pieces!

The Blacktron Alliance is not known for its freighter designs; however, the Humboldt-class bulk freighter is a common sight in the spacelanes between the worlds of the Alliance.

Named after the Old Earth squid it bears a vague resemblance to, the class is particularly common in the Alliance in part due to the limited number of freighter designs produced by the Blacktron.

Insecta's second Racing speeder for the B+ class of the Galactic Speeder League. The aerodynamic shape and widely spread engines guarantee decent speed and steering at most tracks, making the model a hogh-potential competitor in the 26th Season of the League.

This is my seventh Lego Space set, and the first that is from the later generation of Lego Space Classic line. Introduced in 1984, this set comes with yellow, blue, and black astronaut minifigures (blue and black are new to me, and were new for 1984), an axle piece inside the rocket to hold the rocket together, and studless tiles for sliding the launchpad assembly.

The three minifigures, situated in and around the two completed vehicles: a jet scooter on top, and a plane on bottom. The scooter needs a pair of black cylindrical exhaust pieces, which are missing and will need to be acquired via Lego enthusiast sites later. The plane will be launched from a launchpad that is part of the base infrastructure.

Set 6950, Mobile Rocket Transport, was released in 1982, portraying a very large off-road vehicle on a lunar colony, carrying a rocket to a remote location for launch. It was one of the first sets to feature some new elements, including yellow astronaut minifigures, hollow radar dish, and Technic parts. It is decent-sized at 209 pieces and is as large as some base buildings.

The vehicle is now complete, and the rocket and the two minifigures are on board. With five steering wheel pieces as "control" elements, this is quite elaborate. This set is more or less Set 462, Mobile Rocket Launcher, on steroids, with both the rocket carrier/launch mechanism and the control computer terminals, and can also do all the job of Set 483, Alpha-1 Rocket Base, with the added plus of mobility. Both 462 and 483 are already in my collection.

Set 497, Galaxy Explorer, released in 1979, was the flagship of the original Lego Space universe, portraying a large passenger/cargo spaceship with its landing pad on the lunar surface. At 338 pieces and four astronaut minifigures (two red, two white), sprawling over two 25cmx25cm baseplates, this is a spectacular set, with a list price ($32 in 1979 dollars) to match.

Set 497 was the US-market designation; in Europe, the same set was sold as Set 928, Space Cruiser and Moonbase, and the European set number 928 is imprinted on the sides of the spaceship. It is interesting to note that in the US market, the "Space Cruiser" designation was instead used on Set 487, which was a smaller, simpler, cheaper version of Galaxy Explorer.

Finding a complete Galaxy Explorer is considered the holy grail of vintage Lego Space collecting, and I was able to score one on eBay in March 2013. While the set is complete and the price fair, many pieces do have signs of yellowing from excessive sun exposure, one 6x6 light gray tile has an edge that has cracked off, and one 1x3 black tile was replaced by three 1x1 black tiles. The incorrect and damaged parts can easily be replaced, however, since they are common standard Lego parts.

The completed spaceship. A red astronaut is seated in the cockpit as the pilot. Four engines are visible, two on either side of the cockpit and two at the rear; additionally, below the spaceship, three extra engine nozzles, and five pylons, form the landing gear.

Happy Halloween from space!

Porsche reveals its new racing speeder for the Unlim class of the Galactic Speeder League. The racecraft features Futuron-developed protonic engines and has a very low profile due to which it was nicknamed the Flounder, like Brabham BT55.

Built by Nick Kappatos and myself for BrickFair VA, 2021. The landing pad and roadway components were modular in nature, with the hope of expanding and rearranging over time.

Two early Lego Space spaceships side by side.

Set 497 on the right, Galaxy Explorer, is the original Lego spaceship, dating from 1979, and is considered the most desirable classic Lego Space set. Its distinctive feature is the color scheme consisting of light gray lower fuselage and blue upper fuselage, with transparent yellow windows. There was also a smaller version, Set 487, Space Cruiser.

Set 6929, Star Fleet Voyager, dates from 1981, and shows some design changes, including using white upper fuselage and blue windows. It also puts a bigger separation between the crew compartment and the cargo compartment.

Both ships have a similar design for the rear cargo compartment, with the two halves of the compartment swinging open left and right.

Later Lego spaceships, such as 6980 Galaxy Commander, would further continue with the design changes, also adding more play possibilities and complexity.

A new manufacturer shows up in the Galactic Speeder League – MandalMotors from the Mandalore system. It now provides tech support to team Kalevala Power Racing from the same star system. Their first racing speederbike is a heavily updated version of the classic Balutar model.

When a standard space container freighter is too big to dock at a moon or asteroid base, the services of a SimmaTech Standard Crate/Container Hauler (Rego STech SC/CH-0P56) are called for. This skeletal craft ferries containers from orbiting cargo docks to the moon- or asteroid-surface.

One of my better efforts at building an enclosing cockpit, I think. Not specifically an NCS build, for all it's got a yellow NCS spaceman as the pilot. Just your average two-pronged-spear-wielding battle mech

With the Basilisk starfighter, I wanted to try some weapons/loadout variants, like in a SHMUP. This is the level VIII, the weapons on the ship are the same as level VI, the gun drones are retained, and a shield drone is added in front. The one in the original photos looks like it will be level 5. This is the final upgrade I've built, and the last that I had ideas for.

[Please support my LEGO Project].

This inspired from an old Lego System set 6516 called the Moon Walker. I used to have this set when I was a child, playing around with it and pretending my bed is another planet surface.

Anyway, I tried to take the original design concept into my build and modify abit. The color scheme for my space theme is Light Bluish Grey, White and Orange. For my space theme is called 'Zroid' and they are exploring to a made-up planet called 'Axistcata' to collect minerals for their sources of future energy on earth.
