i have learned that everything i thought i knew about colors is wrong and my monitor needs an attitude adjustment. sheesh.
Learned recently that a dear friend from my time living in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is nearing the end and was recently placed in hospice care.
The Mrs. and I packed a bag and made the journey to the place we once called home. It was sad saying farewell to our dear friend and wonderful hiking companion. She will be remembered.
We stopped on the way home in Nevada’s first town, Genoa. Genoa was on the Emigrant Trail; a path traveled by hundreds of Pioneers coming to Oregon and California from the eastern States.

Genoa:
Founded in the Spring of 1851, Genoa is Nevada's first settlement. Sitting on the western edge of the Carson Valley, along the Overland Emigrant Trail, the town was settled by John Reese and pioneers from the Utah Territory. Historically, the land started as a lean-to named Mormon Station.

I had some fun with this one and learned some Photoshop tricks while I was doing it. As soon as I get another boarder staying here I'm going back to the coast. Just seems like there's just a lot of cool adjustments I can do to coastal shots.

Ok, so I learned a new word : -))
Edaphoecotropism occurs when a tree trunk (or branches) grow over and around some object. As the process continues, the object may become completely embedded within the tree trunk.
This example is the remainder of a Bald Cypress tree that was cut away at Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve, Fort Myers, Florida. The remaining trunk piece had grown over the roof embedding the roof edge, and couldn’t be removed without requiring a repair of this structure, so it was left as an example for visitors to see.
There is one thing I learned from what I lived:

So, I learned something after driving an hour to get to this restaurant, Stingaree. I learned that during a Pandemic and off season, one should call the restaurant to make sure they are open before driving an hour and one Ferry ride to get there...;) I didn't really mind. Since it was closed, I was able to get all the shots I wanted without anyone getting in my way.

I've learned that when a turn has a fish it often likes to toss it in the air and catch it again. Wouldn't you? I'm not good at gull or tern identification but my perusal of the books leads me to conclude that this is a Caspian Tern, based mostly on the bright red bill with a bit of darkness at the tip. If anyone has a different opinion, please chime in. (Sterna caspia)

I learned today that is the name for a group of Terns :) A kayaker got a little close to the Tern's nesting platform. The platform has sides so you cannot see how many are in it at any one time. I was surprised at how many took to the air. This is maybe only a quarter of the birds that were flying.

She let go of all of the memories that held her back.
She let go of all of the anxiety that kept her from moving forward.
She let go of the planning and all of the calculations about how to do it just right.
She didn’t promise to let go.
She didn’t journal about it.
She didn’t write the projected date in her Day-Timer.
She made no public announcement and put no ad in the paper.
She didn’t check the weather report or read her daily horoscope.
She just let go.
She didn’t analyze whether she should let go.
She didn’t call her friends to discuss the matter.
She didn’t do a five-step Spiritual Mind Treatment.
She didn’t call the prayer line.
She didn’t utter one word.
She just let go.
No one was around when it happened.
There was no applause or congratulations.
No one thanked her or praised her.
No one noticed a thing.
Like a leaf falling from a tree, she just let go.
There was no effort.
There was no struggle.
It wasn’t good and it wasn’t bad.
It was what it was, and it is just that.
In the space of letting go, she let it all be.
A small smile came over her face.

Another wee skill learned tonight with Affinity... there was a tree just at the edge of the shot on the right... quite dark and distracting. I never noticed it when I took the shot but hated it in the frame. Watched a video in affinity how to use the clone brush to take out objects as the inpainting tool which you can use for smaller more obvious inclusions didn't work in this instance... so a little learning for the evening!
I learned the coolest thing about taking pictures in SL today. I messaged a friend and he told me he had just learned a light trick that blew his mind. I asked him to teach me and this is the result. Mind blown!

It’s time you learned something about mushrooms that even the most hardcore mycologist doesn’t know and that is this…mushrooms can be very sensitive. Silvia, in particular, was susceptible to the taunts of other mushrooms. They claimed she smelled so bad as if she purposefully grew next to horse manure. They said she looked as hard and ridged as a barn roof that was a hundred years old. They said that she was as wrinkly as an old maid who never knew love. And Silvia, well, you can imagine how hurt her feelings were and how she had no choice to turn herself inside out. That Silvia became one mighty mushroom ear and so all of those insults hurled at her bounced right back. Words began clinging to the edges of all the trees and all of the lichen and fungi surrounding them. The entire forest was in turmoil. Every mushroom saw itself for what it had become and was devastated.

We recently learned that the glossy ibis changes at breeding time to add red color. Also, the breeding period is March to August so coming up soon. Some Flickr members already are presenting pictures of ibises with the red color. So we went out looking yesterday in the Rich Grissom Memorial Wetlands at Viera, Florida. We found only one bird so far with red, out of many ibises that were there. This ibis, the subject bird, seemed to lift its wing as if to show us that it was already changing.
Furness Arch - just learned the name 2 years after I posted the photo. Frank Furness, a famed architect, designed the arch for the Connecticut display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Fairmount Park. Later it was moved to this site to mark the beginning of the stairs to Strawberry Mansion atop the bluff.
7 years after I posted this photo, I still love looking at the Furness Arch, the wall and steps.
In addition to the Strawberry Mansion, the former Robin Hood Dell East stands on the top of the bluff. "This open-air amphitheater, managed by the City of Philadelphia’s Parks & Recreation, offers the very best in musical entertainment, family-oriented activities, and creative learning through educational opportunities in the performing arts."
I learned technical drawing at school with this kind of pens (Rotring Isograph).
The pens on the picture deliver lines of respective thicknesses 0.20mm (8 Mil), 0.35mm, 0.5mm and 0.7mm.
They could be a delight to use, delivering perfect lines with a constant thickness and a deep black color if you were in a good day.
They could also be a source of frustration and refuse to get enough ink on the paper... or drip on an almost finished drawing.
But with hindsight, this had mostly to do with how good you took care of them and how relaxed you were when using them. 😉
Amazing extra feature: you could erase mistakes once the ink had dried by carefully scratching the paper with a razor blade.

The caged birds performed best on the test during fall migration time, when they were getting the least sleep....
When urges to migrate kick in, white-crowned sparrows and other songbirds begin flying perhaps as much as 300 miles at night while staying active during the day. Their ability to navigate, avoid predators and find food in different locations while sleep-deprived is a mystery ..."

One thing I've learned in the forest is to always look up. Some of the best sights are up through the trees. On our walk up the saddle to the Wineglass Bay lookout the trees were a standout. But so were the rock formations. And a combination of the two with that beautiful morning sunlight produced a view that is uniquely Australia. This scene would not look out of place in parts of Central Australia.
I have been fortunate to be REALLY busy with work. But it IS long hours, and we have cement floors. This morning I was in back complaining to Davey how my legs hurt, were tired...nag, nag, nag. Bell rings, we have a new customer set the door alarm off, I walk up to see this next customer an it is a one-legged painting contractor. Um yup Lord, Lesson understood. Grateful
I learned ospreys were feeding below a dam near where I live. I took a lawn chair, Pentax K3III, and Pentax 150-450mm and sat and waited. Several ospreys circled around the area.
One of the ospreys flew in low, hovered, and then dove and crashed into the river. Up it came holding a large smallmouth bass.
I made get many images of it hovering, diving, crashing into the water, and carrying off the fish. The camera, which I am still learning to operate, tracked the bird perfectly.
At this site, I have seen eleven ospreys hit the water to catch fish, and only three have succeeded. It is a lot of hit and miss!

Several years ago I learned of the curious connection between Rosa's Cantina, Country and Western singer Marty Robbins and his 1959 smash hit "El Paso." The cantina plays a prominent role in the song to say the least.
Rosa's is located at 3454 Doniphan Drive in East El Paso.
"Rosa's was opened post-prohibition in the early-1940s under a different name: Los Tigres. Then in 1957 the owner, Beto Zubia changed the name to "Rosa's Cantina" for reasons still a bit unclear (rumors swirl about an affair with a waitress named Rosa, but nobody's going on record).
Up until this time the bar/cantina really wasn't that noteworthy. It was a neighborhood hangout that served the workers from the nearby smelters -- in fact this part of El Paso was referred to as "Smeltertown."
But then, according to legend, a tired Marty Robbins needed a break from his long drive between Nashville and Phoenix. He stopped in front of the small saloon, which was closed at the time and got out of his car. As he stretched his legs he reportedly looked through the windows, surveyed the surrounding area (the "badlands" of New Mexico are seen in the distance from Rosa's front door) and then finally got back on the road. By the time he and his band had arrived in Phoenix the ballad was complete.
Was Rosa's Cantina the catalyst for the song or merely a character that fit into the song he was already writing? We'll never know."
