Founded in 1178 by William the Lion (who is buried here), Arbroath Abbey is famously associated with the Declaration of Arbroath of 1320. The Declaration was a letter written by the barons and whole community of the kingdom of Scotland to the pope, asking him to recognise Scotland’s independence and acknowledge Robert the Bruce as the country’s lawful king.

This is the weirdest place I've ever seen a RUBL!! This Washington rarity was eating salt off the pavement in the parking lot at Fred Myer's! If only they were this easy in Vancouver! We have to search through hundreds of Brewer's by scope usually to find them... no easy task. This bird was very confiding and lovely to look at. This is an adult female in winter plumage. Rusty Blackbirds are endangered, so we must do all we can to conserve them. The main threat to their population is habitat loss on their wintering range and the lawful shooting of blackbirds for agricultural control. Kudos to Noah Sanday for thinking out of the box and spotting this bird.

'Against that time, if ever that time come,

When I shall see thee frown on my defects,

When as thy love hath cast his utmost sum,

Call'd to that audit by advised respects;

Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass

And scarcely greet me with that sun thine eye,

When love, converted from the thing it was,

Shall reasons find of settled gravity,--

Against that time do I ensconce me here

Within the knowledge of mine own desert,

And this my hand against myself uprear,

To guard the lawful reasons on thy part:

To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws,

Since why to love I can allege no cause.'

Kirkenes Panorama taken with 24 Portrait shots (750MB RAW file)

Kirkenes [ˈçirkəˌnɛːs] (Finnish: Kirkkoniemi, Kven: Kirkkoniemi, Northern Sami: Girkonjárga, Russian: Киркенес) is a town in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county, in the far northeastern part of Norway. The town lies on a peninsula along the Bøkfjorden, an arm of the large Varangerfjorden. The main church for Kirkenes is Kirkenes Church, located in the Haganes area of the town.

The 2.15-square-kilometre (530-acre) town has a population (2013) of 3,498; which gives it a population density of 1,627 inhabitants per square kilometre (4,210/sq mi). When the neighbouring suburban villages of Hesseng, Sandnes, and Bjørnevatn are all included with Kirkenes, the urban area reaches a total population of almost 8,000 people.

The area around Kirkenes was a common Norwegian–Russian district until 1826, when the present border was settled. The original name of the peninsula was Piselvnes ("Pis River headland"), but this was changed to Kirkenes (meaning "church headland") after the Kirkenes Church was built here in 1862.

Kirkenes is located in the extreme northeastern part of Norway on the Bøkfjorden, a branch of the Varangerfjorden, which is a vast bay connected to the Barents Sea near the Russian–Norwegian border. The town is situated about 400 kilometres (250 mi) north of the Arctic Circle.

Unlike the vast majority of Norway, Kirkenes is located east of the neighbouring country of Finland. Because of this, travelling directly west from Kirkenes actually changes the time zone forward instead of backward, as it usually does. Travelling directly east from Kirkenes (into Russia) changes the time zone forward by an hour in summer, but by two in winter. When Russia implemented permanent daylight saving time between 2011 and 2014, there was a three-hour difference travelling forward from the eastern part of the municipality to westerly Russian areas during winter. It also shares time zones with Galicia in Spain, in spite of a solar time difference of 2½ hours.

One can drive 100 kilometres (62 mi) south, and walk 10 kilometres (6.2 mi), into the Øvre Pasvik National Park, reaching the border point of the three countries (Muotkavaara), where the three time zones meet. There are only a few such places in the world. It is forbidden, according to both Norwegian and Russian law, to circumambulate the border marker, as the only lawful route across the Norwegian–Russian border is at the border control at Storskog.

Kirkenes is located just east of the 30th meridian east. As a result, it is further east than Istanbul, which marks one of the European borders with Asia. The easternmost point of Norway and the municipality is also at a point further east than Saint Petersburg. Kirkenes is also several meridians east of the Gulf of Bothnia.

Sufi Sama or Dhamaal is a special dance style unique to Sufis in Pakistan and India. The rhythmic beat of dhol i.e. drums, sometimes accompanied by other instruments, makes men sway and whirl their bodies into unusual and fascinating shapes.

In Sufi shrines in Pakistan, such as the Lal shrine in Sehwan, Sindh, the practice of Sufi whirling is called Dhamaal and is performed to honor Sufi saints. Unlike the Turkish practice, Dhamaal may be practiced by any devotee – priests as well as pilgrims. Dhamaal is usually preceded by the beating of a drum (naghara) and ringing of bells, as pilgrims raise their hands, start to skip steps standing at one place and gradually work into a trance as the beats get faster. As the beats get faster, rhythms change and the drum beats are accompanies by the playing of shehnai.

In fact such practices were not taught by the last prophet of Allah, Muhammad (peace be upon him). These are innovations in Shariah (God's Law).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) states, “The best speech is that which is embodied in the Book of Allah, the Al Quran; and the best guidance is the guidance given by me, Muhammad. The most evil affairs are the innovations ( bid'ah ), and every innovation ( bid'ah ) is an error”

God ordered Muslims not to divide themselves into sects. Innovations and divisions in matters of religion and worship within Islam are considered to be contamination, error, and deviation. Earlier heinous deviations from monotheism, such as worshipping creation, resulted in condemnation by God. (However, innovations in other matters, such as science and technology to improve life, are greatly encouraged.) God, The Most Compassionate, has told us through His last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when Muhammad (peace be upon him) was nearing the end of his life, that He had completed the religion of Islam. Muslims must recognize that any change in matters of worship is strictly forbidden. No change introduced by humankind, who is under the influence of Satan, could ever add anything positive and would only contribute to the degradation of the completed and perfected religion established by God. All innovations in matters of religion lead to straying, and all straying leads to hellfire. People must not allow any deviation (addition or deletion), even as small as one degree, in matters of worship. If any changes are allowed, those deviations will be compounded by future generations, and the result will be another man made religion, not the Islam as it was perfected by God, The Truth. To build a faith using a “shopping cart” approach or the blind following of any religious leader is inadmissible.

The changing of God’s laws is forbidden in Islam. God condemns religious leaders who alter divine principles. One who attempts to make changes places him or herself on the same level with God, committing polytheism. An example of this would be to make the killing of innocents lawful. The laws of God are perfect and do not need to be “modernized” by anyone. God allows us the freedom to obey or disobey Him by choosing to follow His faith or to follow our own desires. However, He forbids us to change His religious principles.

The spread of sama or dhamal among Sufi orders began sometime around the mid third/ninth century C.E. in Baghdad, eventually finding acceptance and favor in Persian, Turkish and Indian sub continent. The custom of sama evolved in practice over time as it complemented Sufi dhkir, whirling and among some orders dancing and a meal.

The International Court of Justice has a twofold role.

First, it settles, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States. Such disputes may concern, in particular, land frontiers, maritime boundaries, territorial sovereignty, the non use of force, violation of international humanitarian law, non interference in the internal affairs of States, diplomatic relations, hostage taking, the right of asylum, nationality, guardianship, rights of passage and economic rights.

Second, the ICJ gives advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and agencies. These opinions can clarify the ways in which such organizations may lawfully function, or strengthen their authority in relation to their member States.

The ICJ consists of 15 judges, all from different countries, who are elected for a period of nine years and can be re-elected. One third of the composition of the Court is renewed every three years. The President of the Court is elected by his peers every three years; the current President is Judge Ronny Abraham from France. The hearings of the ICJ are always public. HRF Files Criminal Complaint in Italy Against IDF Soldier Israel Yitzhki for War Crimes, Crimes Against Humanity, and Genocide

Brussels / Rome – 15 December 2025:

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) has filed a criminal complaint before the Italian judicial authorities against Israeli soldier Israel Yitzhki, a member of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), for his alleged involvement in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide committed during Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The complaint was submitted to the Procura della Repubblica on the basis of universal jurisdiction, following confirmation that Yitzhki is currently present on Italian territory. Under international and Italian law, Italy is legally obliged to investigate and prosecute individuals suspected of grave international crimes when they are found on its soil.

Why Italy Has a Duty to Act

Italy is a State Party to the Geneva Conventions of 1949, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the UN Convention Against Torture. These instruments impose a clear obligation on States to search for, investigate, and prosecute individuals suspected of grave breaches of international humanitarian law, regardless of nationality or where the crimes were committed.

The complaint explicitly invokes:

* Article 146 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which establishes mandatory universal jurisdiction over grave breaches;

* Article 5(2) of the Convention Against Torture, requiring prosecution when a suspect is present and not extradited;

* The principle of aut dedere aut judicare — extradite or prosecute.

As the filing makes clear, States cannot lawfully become safe havens for suspected perpetrators of international crimes.

The Context: Gaza as a Crime Scene

The complaint situates Yitzhki’s actions within the broader context of Israel’s campaign in Gaza, which UN bodies have repeatedly characterized as involving systematic violations of international law.

As of December 2025:

* Over 70,000 Palestinians have been killed, including more than 20,000 children;

* More than 170,000 people have been injured;

* 92% of homes, 88% of schools, 81% of roads, and 80% of commercial infrastructure have been destroyed or damaged;

* Hundreds of civilians have died from starvation and malnutrition, caused by the deliberate obstruction of food and humanitarian aid.

UN agencies, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court have all confirmed the seriousness of these crimes. Arrest warrants have already been issued by the ICC against Israeli leaders Benjamin Netanyahu (b. 1949) and Yoav Gallant (b. 1958) for crimes against humanity.

Alleged Crimes by Israel Yitzhki

According to HRF’s investigative findings, Israel Yitzhki served in the 432nd Battalion of the Givati Brigade and participated in operations involving:

* Extensive destruction of civilian property without military necessity;

* Attacks on undefended towns, residential buildings, and civilian objects;

* Arson and controlled demolitions of homes and shelters;

* Occupation and destruction of schools used as civilian refuges;

* Unlawful detention and humiliating treatment of Palestinian civilians, including the publication of images showing detainees blindfolded, handcuffed, and kneeling.

The complaint argues that these acts constitute war crimes under Article 8 of the Rome Statute, including:

* destruction of property not justified by military necessity;

* attacks against civilian objects;

* illegal detention of protected persons;

* outrages upon personal dignity and degrading treatment;

* and, potentially, torture and inhuman treatment.

Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide

Beyond individual war crimes, the filing asserts that Yitzhki’s actions may also qualify as crimes against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute, including extermination, unlawful imprisonment, torture, and other inhumane acts committed as part of a widespread and systematic attack against a civilian population.

Crucially, the complaint also addresses genocide. It argues that the systematic destruction of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure — homes, schools, water systems, healthcare facilities — amounts to:

* causing serious bodily and mental harm; and

* deliberately inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of the Palestinian population, in whole or in part.

These conclusions align with findings issued in September 2025 by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which determined that Israeli authorities are committing genocide in Gaza.

Request for Urgent Precautionary Measures

Given the gravity of the allegations and the risk that Yitzhki may leave Italy, HRF has requested that the Italian authorities consider urgent precautionary measures, including:

* pre-trial detention;

* seizure of passports and travel documents;

* preservation of digital evidence.

The filing also formally requests notification of any prosecutorial decisions, including extensions of investigations or potential dismissal, in accordance with Italian criminal procedure.

Abou Jahjah: No Safe Haven in Europe

This filing is part of HRF’s broader strategy to ensure that no European country becomes a refuge for perpetrators of atrocities committed in Gaza.

"International law is meaningless if it stops at borders", HRF General Director Dyab Abou Jahjah (b. 1971) stated.

"When those suspected of war crimes and genocide enter Europe, States must choose between impunity and justice. There is no third option", he added.

The Hind Rajab Foundation will continue to pursue accountability across jurisdictions until those responsible for crimes in Gaza — perpetrators, accomplices, and inciters alike — are brought before competent courts.

HRF Seeks Arrest of Israeli Soldier in Spain Over the Destruction of Beit Hanoun

Barcelona / Brussels – 3 December 2025:

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) has filed a criminal complaint in Spain against Israeli soldier Benayau Nahum for his alleged responsibility in genocide and serious war crimes committed during Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip, particularly in the northern town of Beit Hanoun.

The complaint was submitted after confirming that the suspect was present on Spanish territory, triggering Spain’s obligations under international law to investigate and prosecute grave international crimes. HRF has formally requested the urgent arrest of the suspect to prevent his departure and to ensure accountability.

The Accused and His Military Unit

Benayau Nahum served as a soldier in the 97th Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the 900th Kfir Brigade. This unit has a long record of serious human rights violations, including:

* The killing of unarmed civilians,

* Abuse and torture of detainees,

* Extrajudicial killings,

* And the systematic destruction of Palestinian property.

The battalion has previously been implicated in internationally condemned cases and has repeatedly operated in occupied Palestinian territory with near-total impunity.

*** [ [Personal note: I can confirm this based on what I personally saw during my 2007-2011 UN-affiliated service in the Occupied West Bank. The worst criminal Israeli IDF "military" units by far are certainly the Kfir Brigade and the Nahal of the Nahal brigade.

These two units in particular - their history and all their members ought to be intensively investigated all the way back to 1967 and beyond. Consisting of predominantly jewish fundamentalists, religious zealots, zionists, criminals, kahanists, no-goods and madmen they certainly would be akin to any former member of the Nazi Waffen-SS in my eyes.

You have to be quite oblivious to history if you cannot see the similarities between Nazi Germany and these Israeli paramilitary / military groups represented by the Kfir, the Gadna and the Nahal. Israel is through and through a jewish supremacist militaristic fascist society.] ] ***

Its presence in Gaza formed part of Israel’s large-scale ground operations in the north of the Strip.

Destruction of Beit Hanoun

Between late 2024 and early 2025, Beit Hanoun was subjected to near-total destruction as part of a broader military strategy aimed at emptying northern Gaza of its population. Entire neighborhoods were set on fire, leveled by heavy machinery, and erased from the map.

The evidence in HRF’s possession places Benayau Nahum directly on the ground during these operations. It shows his participation in systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes and public buildings, at a time when Beit Hanoun was already largely depopulated and defenseless.

The scale of destruction in northern Gaza during this period rendered vast areas uninhabitable and made return impossible for most of the displaced population.

Legal Qualification of the Crimes

The complaint accuses Benayau Nahum of:

* Genocide, for contributing to conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of part of the Palestinian population;

* War crimes, including:

- Extensive destruction of civilian property not justified by military necessity;

- Attacks against civilian buildings and undefended towns;

- Participation in the forcible displacement of a protected civilian population.

Under international humanitarian law, civilian objects are strictly protected. The large-scale, methodical destruction documented in Beit Hanoun cannot be justified by any lawful military objective.

Spain’s Obligation to Act

Spain is bound by international law, including the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute, to either prosecute or extradite individuals suspected of committing genocide and war crimes when they are found on its territory.

Given the presence of the suspect in Spain and the lack of genuine proceedings elsewhere, HRF has requested:

* The opening of a criminal investigation;

* The immediate detention of the suspect;

* And the adoption of urgent measures to prevent his escape.

Breaking the Wall of Impunity

This complaint is part of HRF’s broader effort to dismantle the system of impunity protecting perpetrators of crimes against the Palestinian people. It sends a clear message that:

Participation in genocide and war crimes carries personal criminal responsibility, wherever the perpetrator may attempt to hide.

HRF continues to pursue similar cases across multiple jurisdictions and will not relent until justice is served.

Why Bar Associations Must Act: The Dutch Debate on Complicity and the Responsibility of Lawyers in International Crimes

3 November 2025:

On 2 December, the Dutch Bar Association (NOvA) [Nederlandse Orde van Advocaten] will hold an extraordinary assembly to address a question that is rapidly becoming unavoidable across the global legal profession:

What is the responsibility of lawyers when their work intersects with a state committing international crimes?

The Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF) welcomes the participation of its co-founder, Haroon Raza, a criminal defence attorney with more than twenty years of experience, in this meeting. Mr. Raza's contribution focuses on a reality many in the profession have long avoided confronting — that legal advice, corporate structuring, and financial facilitation can play a direct role in sustaining Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The Professional Environment: A Legal System Intertwined with Global Capital

The Netherlands stands at the centre of a dense network of financial and corporate structures. Tens of billions of euros connected to Israeli entities — including companies tied to the military, surveillance, technological development, and settlement expansion [ *** Personal note: For instance American Airbnb and Dutch Booking.com - just to mention a few! *** ] — flow through Dutch holding companies, investment funds, and advisory firms.

Lawyers are involved at every step: drafting corporate agreements, approving investments, advising on compliance, structuring acquisitions, and legitimising transactions.

When these structures are linked to a state perpetrating mass killing, starvation, forced displacement, and systematic destruction of civilian life, the role of the legal profession must be examined with honesty rather than ritualised neutrality.

Motion 3: An Attempt to Define Professional Boundaries

At the centre of the upcoming assembly is Motion 3, a proposal seeking to address precisely this challenge. The motion calls for the establishment of an independent committee within the Dutch Bar Association to evaluate the responsibilities of lawyers involved in high-risk transactions — particularly those connected to situations where there is a serious risk of contributing to war crimes, crimes against humanity, apartheid, or genocide.

Its purpose is straightforward:

* to articulate clear due-diligence requirements in high-risk contexts,

* to identify warning signs of potential complicity,

* to define professional standards of conduct, and

* to provide guidance on when lawyers must decline or withdraw from engagements.

Motion 3 is not a political statement. It is an attempt to bring the profession’s established principles — independence, integrity, and the duty to avoid unlawful conduct — into alignment with the realities of modern global practice. Comparable standards already exist for sanctions regimes, anti-money-laundering responsibilities, and other areas where legal services intersect with international harm.

The question is why similar principles have not yet been applied to Israel’s actions in Gaza, despite the scale and severity of the crimes.

A Profession Confronted With Its Own Infrastructure

Large law firms and corporate practices in major financial centres — London, New York, Paris, Frankfurt, Singapore, Dubai, Toronto — routinely advise clients with direct or indirect links to Israeli institutions, military industries, and settlement enterprises.

[ *** Personal note: A huge amount of these settlements are funded directly from the USA and needs to be examined most thoroughly - Example: The US 501(c) tax-exempted Hebron Fund ! Like WTF!? ]

In many cases, risk assessments are superficial or absent. The assumption that “legal advice is neutral” has become a shield against accountability.

This assumption is no longer tenable.

Speaking ahead of the assembly, Mr. Raza addressed the profession with unusual clarity:

"When a legal opinion, a contract, or a corporate structure helps sustain a system committing genocide, the lawyer involved cannot hide behind claims of neutrality. Our profession must recognise that routine legal work can become a vehicle for atrocity. Motion 3 is about safeguarding the integrity of the law — and ensuring we do not enable Israel’s crimes in Gaza."

His statement reflects a broader shift: lawyers are beginning to acknowledge that their professional activities can contribute materially to the functioning of systems responsible for mass violence.

The Broader Context: Accountability Beyond the Battlefield

The Hind Rajab Foundation’s work has repeatedly demonstrated that atrocity crimes do not occur in isolation. They are supported by corporate supply chains, financial networks, investment portfolios, digital infrastructure, and legal advice. Israel’s genocide in Gaza is no exception.

Legal professionals occupy a crucial position within these systems. Without their services, many transactions linked to military procurement, settlement construction, surveillance systems, or economic extraction simply cannot proceed.

The question for bar associations worldwide is not whether their members have political opinions. The question is whether their work strengthens — knowingly or unknowingly — the machinery of genocide.

A Necessary Evolution in Professional Self-Regulation

Motion 3 offers a model of what serious professional self-governance can look like. Bar associations across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia should consider similar mechanisms:

* independent oversight bodies,

* mandatory due-diligence frameworks,

* explicit standards on complicity,

* and training on international criminal liability for legal advisors.

Such measures are not symbolic. They reflect the reality that the legal profession is now deeply embedded in the structures that make international crimes possible.

The Moment Ahead

Israel’s actions in Gaza — mass killing, destruction of civilian infrastructure, systematic starvation, and the targeted annihilation of families — constitute genocide. In this context, the legal profession’s responsibilities cannot remain undefined.

The debate within the Dutch Bar Association is a signal to bar associations everywhere:

The age of pretending that legal work exists outside the world’s worst crimes is over.

The credibility of the profession depends on its willingness to recognise this moment — and to act accordingly.

I have always loved theater, the stage of emotions. Where everything is lawful, where you pretend while remaining yourself.

When you play a character, you give a part of yourself, but at the same time that part of you will change irreversibly, forever.

... a comment on the mind boggling complexity and deterrent that ‘lawful development’ legislation poses for a small environmentally conscious domestic solar project which ticks all the right boxes for certification … ironic in this day and age!

Declaration of Intent/Wedding Vows

Michael, do you give yourself in marriage to Allison, to love her and to be her best friend? Will you laugh with her, encourage and inspire her, and comfort her in times of sorrow and struggle? Do you promise to love Allison in good times when life is easy and simple as well as in difficult times, when life seems hard and complicated? Do you promise to cherish her, to be forever faithful and to always hold Allison in the highest regard, now and for all eternity? Do you take Allison to be your lawfully wedded wife?

Michael: I do.

Stockholm Police House at Kungsholmen (1903–11) was designed by swedish architect Gustaf Lindgren. He is famous for his public works, but he also made villas.

The building has also been described as one of the few Swedish complexes that were built in the imperial style that was used around the world to manifest lawful authority.

Taken at Piper Spit at Burnaby Lake. Rusty Blackbirds are threatened in Canada and steadily declining, so we must do all we can to conserve them. The main threat to their population is habitat loss on their wintering grounds and the lawful shooting of blackbirds for agricultural control.

Be proud of the country you live in and respect it and the laws... If you don't then move to where you wish but do it lawfully and be thankful for those who welcome you!!!

The love of your heart

The following is from Spurgeon's sermon,

"UNPURCHASABLE LOVE"

If you do not give to God your heart, you have given him nothing.

If you do not give to God your soul, if you do not love him, if

you do not serve him because you love him, if you do not come

to him, and surrender to him your inner self, you may have

been baptized, — immersed or sprinkled, — you may have come to

the communion table; you may have bowed your knees until your

knees have grown horny, you may have prayed until you are hoarse,

and wept until the fountains of your eyes are dry, you may have

given all your gold, and lacerated every member of your body with

mortifications, and starved yourself to a skeleton- but you have

truly done nothing towards obtaining love to Christ.

The substance of your house is utterly scorned if you offer

it to the Lord in the stead of the love of your heart.

Love he must have; this is his lawful demand.

His people delight to render it; and if

The property now known as Tanglewood Park was part of land claimed by Sir Walter Raleigh for Queen Elizabeth on March 25, 1584. Among the earliest European settlers of the Yadkin River Valley was William Johnson, an immigrant from Wales. In 1757, just four years after the Moravian settlement of the Wachovia Tract in the nearby communities of Bethabara and Salem, Johnson purchased the mile square central portion of the present property from the Ellis family to whom the land was deeded in 1753 by Lord William Linville. The Ellis family leased the land for a short time "for five shillings lawful money of Great Britain in hand a yearly rent of one peppercorn payment at he Feast of Saint Michael, the archangel". After obtaining the property, Johnson built a fort overlooking the Yadkin River to protect his family and neighbors from attacks during the French and Indian War. Currently, this spot is marked by a monument just south of the Manor House. In 1765, he died and is now buried on the highest hill in the area called Mount Pleasant. In 1809 a simple frame church was erected next to his grave and remains today as one of the park’s architectural attractions. Although services are no longer held there, many people are united in marriage at the Mount Pleasant Church each year.

In 1859, James Johnson had the 18 room Manor House built on a hill in the center of the estate. The house was a gift of love to his daughter, Emily, for a wedding present. Two wings were added later.

The Johnson heirs sold their property in 1921 to William Neal Reynolds, brother of tobacco entrepreneur R. J. Reynolds. At that time the Tanglewood tract was enlarged to over 1,100 acres (4.5 km2) and the Manor House expanded to 28 rooms. Mr. Will, as he was called, raised and raced thoroughbred harness horses and established Tanglewood Farm as a home to some of the country’s finest pacers. In the Manor House, Mr. Will had a special room dedicated to his trophy’s, called the "Trophy Room." A fire that started mysteriously in a trophy room display case in 1980 did considerable damage, but the room has been restored. The room is surrounded by plaques and horse photographs. It is obvious that Mr. Will was a horse lover, and this tradition is carried on with Tanglewood Farm. Trail rides, hayrides, and carriage rides are available by reservation.

Today, the Manor House is a Bed & Breakfast Inn with 10 guest rooms, sweeping staircases, the Trophy Room, 20’s Room, and Rock Fireplace Room. These facilities are used for weddings, meetings, and overnight accommodations.

Mr. Will’s wife, Kate, a horticultural enthusiast, began the extensive native and ornamental plantings at Tanglewood and employed German master gardener, Mr. Frank Lustig, who continued her plans and his life’s work. He contributed the 800 bush Rose Garden on the Manor House lawn, the Arboretum behind the house, and the nearby Fragrance Garden to the estate. For 60 years, even after the death of his employers, and their gift of the estate, Lustig poured his talents into Tanglewood. He is buried in the graveyard at Tanglewood next to the historic church. The Reynolds couple had no children, and, as a gesture enabling others to benefit from the beauty, elegance, history, and recreation their country estate had to offer, in 1951, they willed the Tanglewood property to the citizens of Forsyth County to share as a public recreational park. Thus, Tanglewood Park was born. The facility is owned by Forsyth County. [wikipedia]

Making a good job of it, I think, and obviously a hazard to all lawful and honest seafarers. Tall Ships Race 2025, Aberdeen.

Al-udhhiyah" 'Eed sacrifice is a Sunnah (recommended act) for any Muslim who is able to do it. This is the opinion of the majority of the scholars. It is also one of the good deeds of Islam as 'Aaishah may Allaah be pleased with her narrated from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) as saying: "Son of Aadam has not done any deed on the Day of Adhha more likable to Allaah than shedding blood (slaughtering the 'Eed sacrifice). So be pleased with it". Most scholars believe that slaughtering the 'Eed sacrifice is better than giving its value in charity.

The sacrificed animal should be from the livestock (cows, camels, sheep, goats). As for the prevailing view in this concern might be that the sheep and goats are the best animals for the sacrifice because the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) never slaughtered on the 'Eed any sacrifices except these kinds of animals. But the camels, the cows and the buffaloes could all be slaughtered as 'Eed sacrifices.

The 'Eed sacrifice should be in a good state and fat enough so that its meat could be eaten as this is a symbol of Allaah. And Allaah Says (what means): (And whosoever honours the symbols of Allaah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart) [Quran 22:32]

The 'Eed sacrifice should be more than six months old if it is a sheep as narrated by Ibn Maajah in a Hadeeth traceable in ascending order to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) as saying: "Only a Jaza'a of sheep can suffice as 'Eed sacrifice'' and the Jaza'a is the sheep that is at least six months old. As for 'Eed sacrifice from the goats, it should be at least one year old. The cow, if chosen to be 'Eed sacrifice, two years old. But the camel should not be less than five years old".

On the other hand, one should avoid making sacrifice with a defective animal. Al-Baraa' Ibn 'Aazib may Allaah be pleased with him said the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) stood before us and said: "Four (kinds of animals) are not sufficient in the sacrifices: The one-eyed whose loss of one eye is evident, and the sick whose sickness is evident, the limp whose limpness is evident and the skinny one which has no flesh on it". [al-Bukhaari]

The majority of scholars are agreed that the four defects that are mentioned in the previous Hadeeth could be taken as a reference for other kinds of defects. So, any defect that is equal to one of them or worse than it makes the sacrifice invalid like (the blind or one which lacks one foot).

The castrated animal can suffice because the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) observed 'Eed sacrifice with two castrated rams. Also the sheep that was born without a fat tail or which has at least half of its fat tail can suffice as 'Eed sacrifice. But the sheep whose fat tail was completely cut off does not suffice.

Moreover, one sheep or one goat is sufficient as 'Eed sacrifice for the man as well as his own family. It is also lawful for 7 people to slaughter one cow as 'Eed sacrifice. Jabir Ibn Abdullaah may Allaah be pleased with him said: "In the year of Hudaybiyah, we along with Allaah's Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) sacrificed a camel for seven persons and a cow for seven persons". [Muslim]

The participant among the seven involves his family with him because the seventh here is the same as a complete sheep or a goat.

The time for slaughtering the sacrifice is after the Adhha prayer and slaughtering it before the prayer does not suffice as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The first (act) with which we start our day (the day of 'Eed Al-Adhha) is that we offer prayer. We then return and sacrifice the animals and he who does that in fact has adhered to our Sunnah (practice). And he who slaughters the (animal on that day before the 'Eed prayer), for him (the slaughtering of animal is directed to the acquiring of) meat for his family, and there is nothing of the sort of sacrifice in it". He also said: "He who sacrifices (the animal) before offering the ('Eed) prayer, he should offer again in its stead, and he who did not sacrifice the animal should slaughter it by reciting the name of Allaah "

It is likable for one to witness slaughtering his sacrifice or to slaughter it himself and to divide it into three parts. He eats one third with his family, he gives out one third in charity and one third as gifts as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said to his daughter Faatimah may Allaah be pleased with her: "Be present when your 'Eed sacrifice is slaughtered. Allaah forgives you as the first drop of its blood comes out". [al-Bayhaqi ' and Abdul Razzaaq]

He should also say when slaughtering it "Bismillaah, O Allaah! It is from Your favor and for You".

The Investiture of king Narseh is carved into the rocks near the tomb of Darius I the Great. The king, the second large figure from the right, receives the cydaris ring from a female figure. A young prince is standing between them; to the left are imperial grandees.

Narseh, a younger son of the great Shapur I, had served as ruler of the eastern provinces (e.g., Sistan) during the reign of his nephew Bahram II, but had come to power by a coup d'état, deposing Bahram's son, Bahram III. That he was not a lawful ruler may explain that he does not receive the cydaris from Ahuramazda, but from a women: she may be Shapurdokhtak, the king's wife, through whom Narseh was entitled to the throne.

Alternatively, she may be Anahita, the goddess of the waters, families, and fertility, but the fact that king Narseh does not salute her as befits a worshipper in front of a deity, seems to contradict this interpretation of the ancient relief. On the other hand, it is often assumed that the cult of Anahita became popular during the reign of Narseh.

The identity of the little prince is less problematic: he must be the king's son Hormizd II, who succeeded his father.

Behind the king, we can see several important courtiers, making the gesture with the fist and index finger that expresses respect for the king. This gesture can be seen on countless Sasanian reliefs.

There is no triumph relief of Narseh, neither at Naqš-i Rustam nor at another place. This comes as no surprise, because the king was defeated in 297 by the Roman emperor Galerius and was even forced to give up parts of Armenia. It was a sign of the times: after the reign of Shapur I, the Sasanian empire was weak and divided, which can also be deduced by the rapid succession of kings.

another homeless person

The term unsheltered refers to that segment of a homeless community who do not have ordinary lawful access to buildings in which to sleep. Such persons frequently prefer the term houseless to the term homeless. Others may use the term street people, which does not fully encompass all unsheltered in that many such persons do not spend their time on urban street environments. Many shun such locales and prefer to convert unoccupied or abandoned buildings, or to inhabit mountains or, more often, lowland meadows, and creek banks and beaches Many jurisdictions have developed programs to provide short term emergency shelter (often in churches or other institutional real property, during particularly cold spells). These are referred to as warming centers, and are credited by their advocates as lifesaving.

A portion of the homeless population are generally in transit, but there is no generally accepted terminology to describe them; some nomenclature is frequently associated with derogatory connotations, and thus the professional and vernacular lingo to describe these persons is both evolving and not lacking in controversy. Much of the concern stems from the European situation, where homeless persons of Roma, Sinti and other ethnic descent have rejected the term gypsy. Other terms which some use regarding in-transit persons are: transient, vagabond, tramp or drifter. Occasionally, these terms are interchanged with terms not necessarily implying that the person is a traveler, i.e. hobo. The termbum is used for persons lacking a work ethic. The term transient is frequently used in police reports, without any precise definitions across jurisdictions.

It is complex and difficult to define homelessness. Many different definitions have been made and changes to the concept are constantly being brought to attention. The United States Congress has developed a definition that has gone through multiple changes. First applied in 1987, this general definition was provided and is now called the McKinney-Vento Act. As time went on and homelessness was still apparent in the USA, Congress added a definition for the homeless children and youths that will be using the educational programs; this change accrued in 2002. Congress later, in 2009, enacted the Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition Housing Act, also known as The HEARTH Act. This broadened the general definition of homelessness and gave more consideration to help given to those who are considered homeless. Once again, in 2011, the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) issued a final rule to implement changes to the definition of homeless in the HEARTH Act. The implemented rule expands who is eligible for HUD-funded homeless assistance programs.

28th September 1999

Whilst the main demonstration taking place was by the Countryside Alliance in support of it's stance to keep Country Sports (hunting) as a lawful activity, the police had to deal with a separate group of protesters calling for hunting to be banned.

The police were busy that day.

While we were walking along St James's Street, we came across this attractive area. It was really quiet down at the bottom of the hill, but then Shaftesbury generally wasn't really a noisy place!

The goal of the Millennium Green is:

"To Provide And Maintain An Open Space To Be Known As "Rolt Millennium Green" For The Benefit Of The Inhabitants And To Be Used Forever As An Area For Informal Recreation Play Or Other Leisure-Time Occupations. A Meeting Area Or Place For Community Events And For Any Other Lawful Purpose Consistent With These Trusts And For The General Benefit Of The Community."

The Rolt Millennium Green – Shaftesbury’s beautiful and tranquil award winning open space in St James. Owned by the whole community, and created and maintained by local volunteers.

O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.(2:168)

The Auxilia of the Roman Empire were non-citizen troops who were part of citizen legions. They were recruited from the vast pool of free provincial subjects who were 90% of the Roman Empires population in the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. Their purpose was to support the legion when it came to conquering new lands, defending the empire from invasions, and suppressing revolts. The auxilia would often serve as specialized units such as cavalry and archers, with the most famous being Germanic cavalry and Cretan archers. The auxilia would not be stationed in their home territory to reduce the risk of a revolt. One example of this is that Hadrian's wall in the province of Britannia, would be stationed by auxilia from Germania and Belgica, rather than troops native to Britannia.

The auxilia would serve for around 25 years, the same as a citizen legionnaire. The incentives for non-citizens to join the auxilia were upward mobility as in Roman society, service guaranteed citizenship. The benefits of Roman citizenship include voting in elections, owning property, having their children automatically become citizens, holding office, having a lawful marriage, the right to a legal trial, and more. The auxilia system was an effective way of assimilating non-Romans into Roman society.

The incentive to join the Roman auxilia would later become meaningless when Emperor Caracalla granted citizenship to all inhabitants of the empire in 212 A.D. After this decision, there would be very little difference between the average legionnaire and auxilia.

There are two more unreleased live recording special mixes of Taste Tribes, one at Faust-Studio and one by Günter Müller in the archives.

Subterranean Collectives: Taste Tribes and the Entelechy of Sound:

If 7k Oaks openly aligned itself with Joseph Beuys’ “social sculpture,” Taste Tribes may be seen as its more subterranean counterpart—less oriented to ecological symbolism and civic space, more attuned to the cryptic energies of the urban periphery, where graffiti marks the wall and sound marks the ear as parallel inscriptions of collective life. Both ensembles were founded by Alfred 23 Harth in 2007: 7k Oaks in Rome with Massimo Pupillo, Luca Venitucci, and Fabrizio Spera, and Taste Tribes with Hans-Joachim Irmler (Faust) and the Swiss electronic improviser Günter Müller, later joined by Wolfgang Seidel (Eruption). Their emergence corresponded to a moment when Harth, after years in Asia and collaborations in Japan, returned to re-situate himself within European avant-garde traditions—yet not simply to return but to reimagine them through dialogue across generations and geographies.

The very name Taste Tribes emphasizes plurality, nomadism, and the refusal of hierarchy. “Tribes” designates both solidarity and fragmentation—temporary affiliations forged in ritual rather than fixed institutions. Their covers, emblazoned with four graffiti-like figures across both the 2008 and 2023 releases, act as surrogate signatures. Not portraits in any conventional sense, these glyphs instead function as visual analogues of alter-egos, painted marks that echo the very logic of improvised sound: provisional identities traced against a mutable background. Just as graffiti asserts a presence in anonymous public space, the Taste Tribes inscriptions claim the space of sound as a site of ephemeral authorship—collective, corrosive, and resistant to commodification.

Where 7k Oaks invokes Beuys explicitly—through its name, its ecologically charged dedications, and even track titles like Soziale Plastik—Taste Tribes embodies a more veiled articulation of the Goethean–Steinerian–Beuysian lineage. Goethe’s concept of entelechy described the inner formative principle by which the plant “makes itself out of itself”—an organic self-unfolding irreducible to mechanical repetition. Steiner, taking Goethe as the “Copernicus and Kepler of the organic world,” emphasized that Goethe had discovered the hidden laws of living form, just as astronomers had charted the laws of the cosmos. Beuys, inheriting this current of thought, transposed it into the social domain: art, like life, was no longer an object but a vital process; every human action could become sculpture, a force within the living organism of society.

It is precisely at this nexus that Taste Tribes situates itself, though in sound rather than in visual or ecological form. Their improvisations are not “pieces” but processes of emergence, sonic entelechies that unfold from within rather than being imposed from without. Noise-fields, electronic scatterings, the guttural breath of Harth’s reeds, the drone and churn of Irmler’s organ, the digitized flicker of Müller’s electronics—each gesture seems to contain the seed of its own self-determination. Improvisation here is not chaos but a morphology, akin to Goethe’s archetypal leaf, in which variation is the manifestation of a deeper, lawful principle.

In this light, the graffiti-figures that adorn their albums are more than decoration. They may be understood as glyphs of entelechy—graphic correlates to the music’s organic unfolding. Just as Beuys’ “7000 Oaks” made visible the slow work of transformation in the city’s ecological and social landscape, Taste Tribes inscribes transformation sonically: an acoustical “urban forest” grown from noise, feedback, and communal breath. If 7k Oaks plants the tree, Taste Tribes tags the wall—both reimagining art’s place in lived space, one through ecological grafting, the other through acoustic insurgency.

Ultimately, Taste Tribes challenges the listener to hear improvisation not as arbitrary play but as a social and organic law of becoming. Their soundworld exemplifies how the avant-garde, in the wake of Goethe, Steiner, and Beuys, continues to insist on creativity as an irreducible vitality: anarchic yet ordered, ephemeral yet archetypal. By foregrounding ritual over authorship, graffiti-mark over signature, process over object, Taste Tribes demonstrates that in the realm of sound as in life, the most radical art is not constructed—it grows.
