LAHORE: The divisional administration on Saturday inaugurated the newly beautified Istanbul Chowk near Town Hall, stating the project would reflect peace, brotherhood and harmony with Turkey.

The intersection has been beautified under the Lahore Beautification Project with expertise of the National College of Arts, Punjab University, University of Engineering and Technology, arts and urban development experts and the Lahore Biennale Foundation. It would be maintained daily and the Turkish government would also own it.

Outside the Lahore Museum in the middle of Mall road sits the 'Zamzama Gun', also known as 'Kim's Gun'.

Zamzama (meaning lion's roar) was made sometime in mid-1700's for Shah Durrani but was damaged and brought to Lahore. It came to be known as 'Kim's Gun' after Rudyard Kipling's character Kim, who played on it in the book, Kim:

"He [Kim] sat, in defiance of muncipal orders, astride the gun Zam-Zammah on her brick platform opposite the old Ajaib-Ghar -- the Wonder House as the natives call the Lahore Museum. Who hold Zam-Zammah, that 'fire-breathing dragon', hold the Punjab, for the great green-bronze piece is always first of the conquerors' loot."

Lahore (لاةور) is Pakistan's second largest city, and the capital of the northeastern Punjab province. It is widely considered the country's cultural capital. The heart of Lahore is the Walled or Inner City, a very densely populated area of about one square kilometre. Founded in legendary times, and a cultural centre for over a thousand years, Lahore has many attractions to keep the tourist busy. The Mughal and Sikh legacy survives in the Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque and Gurdwara, the Mall is lined with colonial-gothic buildings from the British Raj, and the suburbs of Gulberg and Defence feature palatial mansions and trendy shopping districts.
