Altea, Spain

Altea is a town and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain, north of Alicante on the section of Mediterranean coast called the Costa Blanca.

At present, the economy of Altea is based on tourism, which started to grow in the 1950s because of its good weather, beaches and the labyrinthine streets with whitewashed house-fronts that characterize the town. Altea is protected on the north by the bluffs of the Serra de Bèrnia, creating an especially mild microclimate. Its seafront esplanade is planted with palms.

Uçhisar is a town of Turkey, located in the province of Nevsehir. This village is typical of Cappadocia. It is famous thanks to Kale (Castle), rock visible several kilometers and the highest point of Cappadocia (1300 m). This volcanic peak was dug shelter from the Hittite period (1500 BC.). The mountain has then ceased to serve as a refuge for others, the early Christians persecuted by the Romans. Labyrinthine fortress houses a set of chapels, monasteries, apartments, dining halls, warehouses or common rooms connected by a network of galleries that unfold over twenty floors. Some cave dwellings are still occupied.

A little adventure is the visit of the "Golden Cathedral" in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

After a long hike from the trailhead into the valley of the Escalante River you have to

1. find the sand dune on which you descend to the valley of the Escalante,

2. find a passage in the labyrinthine scrub to the shore,

3. cross the icy river with about 1/2 m water depth and

4. walk the neon canyon with its towering cliffs to its end.

But it's worth it, especially in the sunshine in the late morning, when indirect light makes the walls glow in beautiful colors.

"yet I never knew

nor ever learned...

her name."

-"Il Nome della Rosa" (The Name of The Rose) by Umberto Eco

I've been hesitant to enter a photo contest lately, but I'm submitting this. Because when i visited the cave, my first impression pointed one my favorite book.

A hidden archive of forbidden books and a blind archivist who guards it.

A labyrinthine of books and knowledge.

Hidden truths.

Heretical delight..

Desire and beauty.

Seduction.

And love.

No one knows the name of the rose yet.

I read that book in Japanese, so I couldn't quote the Italian or english. It's not an exact quote, but it's an homage to the place.

You may remember the 1978 play “Evita” and the song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”

The song appears multiple times throughout the musical, sung by the character Eva Perón. - Eva Perón was the leader of Argentina and the wife of former president Juan Perón. - The song is about Eva's urging the people of Argentina not to mourn her after her death.

The Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires is where Eva Perón is interred. It is a place where you can lose yourself in a labyrinthine city of the dead.

Over 6,400 statues, sarcophagi, coffins and crypts commemorate some of Argentina’s most celebrated sons and daughters, not least Eva "Evita" Perón, in this city of the dead.

The land, which belonged to the Recollect monks from which the neighborhood took its name, became the city’s first public cemetery in 1822. It is an eerily beautiful place, with shadowed walkways and towering marble mausoleums rich in Art Deco, Art Nouveau, baroque and neo-gothic architectural styles, Masonic symbols and powerful religious iconography.

Over 90 of its tombs are listed as national historical monuments. The most visited tombs are those of Eva Perón and former Argentine presidents Sarmiento and Raúl Alfonsín.

Every cemetery has a ghost story, and Recoleta is no exception:

- David Alleno worked for 30 years as a cemetery grave-digger, carefully saving his money for his own plot and a statue of himself. It is said that as soon as the architect he had commissioned for the statue had finished the work, Alleno went home and killed himself. Apparently you can still hear his keys jangling as his ghost walks the cemetery’s narrow pathways at dawn.

- After Liliana Crociati died on her honeymoon in Austria in the 1970s. Her parents reconstructed her bedroom within her tomb, and at the entrance placed a bronze statue of Liliana in her wedding dress, with her beloved pet dog at her side.

The tomb of Eva Peron (née Duarte). Although she died in 1952, her body wasn’t interred in the Duarte family mausoleum for 20 years. Evita lies in a heavily fortified crypt some five metres underground, to protect her remains.

Pillkukayna (other spellings Pilco Kayna, Pilcocayna, Pilko Kaina, Pilkokaina, Pillco Kayma) is an archaeological site on the shore of the island of Isla del Sol in the southern part of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. Sacred island of the Incas.

The constructions in the southern part are particularly notable.

In Yumani stands out the stone building called Pilkokaina or Palacio del Sol, remains of what used to be the Inca's residence on this sacred island; At the end of them you have the opportunity to drink holy water from the fountain of "eternal youth".

In Challapampa (to the north), is the labyrinthine construction of the Chinkana, the sacred rock of 65 meters long by 7 high and irregular shapes, located in the highest part of the island. It is the place where Manco Kápac and Mama Ocllo are said to have founded the Inca Empire.

I fled Him, down the nights and down the days;

I fled Him, down the arches of the years;

I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways

Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears

I hid from Him,
