Sarah and Jareth from Jim Henson's "Labyrinth," steampunk style (which is pretty close to what they were in the movie, I guess).
This one is for the people who haven't seen Labyrinth and/or don't know about the Escher-style sequence and/or need a heavier reference-poke. ;\
I walked this labyrinth today.
This is a photo of a laminated aerial photo of the labyrinth at Serenbe, just about 45 minutes south of Atlanta. The labyrinth is just one component of what is truly a beautiful and serene place. I hope to return there soon. The labyrinth is quite large and is apparently modeled on the one found in Chartres Cathedral in France.

© 2007 Celeste Vaught Art. Fourth in the "Florida" series, this is based on a cropped photo of a Ficus tree I took while at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida last month. It, like the first three is 16" x 20" acrylic on canvas and is framed in a lovely flat, wide walnut frame. If interested in purchasing this or any of the others in the series, please email.
On the same peninsula and nearly adjacent to the Dragon's Teeth is a labyrinth. It's not ancient, but has been around a while.
A labyrinth isn't a maze; there's only one path, with no choices. Done as intended, it's a spiritual journey, as one continues to walk through, sometimes pausing at the turns to reflect on life, and deeper things. Many labyrinths are found in the medieval churches of Europe, substituting for a pilgrimage that many people simply could not afford to make. I like the definition that "a maze is where you can get lost; a labyrinth is where you can find yourself."

The head plumage reminds me of the hair do of the Goblin King character played by the late great Bowie in the film Labyrinth.
Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen. For my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great... " Labyrinth/1986/Jim Henson"

with my laptop dead I need to go through photos of holiday and at home in December to sort through what is sorted, what is posted...so here is something from the weekend.
I saw Labyrinth TWICE in the THEATER last week! Pretty much a dream I've had for the past 20 years! : D My Mom and Dad took my Sister and I to see it in 1986 and I was blown away. It's been my favorite movie ever since and has inspired me in so many ways...including my wedding day : ) www.flickr.com/photos/halloweve/277890183/in/set-72057594...
Thanks so much to my Brother-in-law and his girlfriend for letting me know, and coming with me the first time. Thanks to my Sister for coming with me the second time!
*Funny note: the last time my Sister and I saw Labyrinth in theaters, I was nine years old and she was a nine month fetus in Mom's belly! : D
My friend Darren (standing, center right), leading the world's largest yoga class at Grace Cathedral. There were a record 500+ people in attendance that night.
My church for Good Friday did a Labyrinth. This can be also known as a prayer walk and reflection. You walk the Labyrinth, pray, read scripture and reflect.
There is the scene and the way you see the scene.

Tonight's progress: I'm still not happy with the base to the birdbath, but at least I have a plan to fix it when I'm finished weaving! I would have had to unweave way too much to redo it the way I wanted to, but a little bit of stitching should do the trick.

What is a Labyrinth?.....
At its most basic level, the labyrinth is a path used for walking meditation. They can be viewed as a metaphor for the journey to the centre of your deepest self and back out into the world, with a broadened understanding of who you are.
The pathway of the labyrinth is in full view, which allows a person to be quiet and focus internally. Walking the labyrinth is a right-brain task using intuition and creativity. The labyrinth’s unicursal path meanders one way in and the same way out. It is showing and is teaching us centredness. It is this that differentiates a labyrinth from a maze, which has many paths and dead ends leading to confusion.
History...
The labyrinth is an ancient pattern found in many cultures around the world. Labyrinths have their roots in Greek ritual spiral dance over 4000 years ago. The Roman empire spread the symbol of the labyrinth by way of coins, ceramics and mosaics. Each culture they encountered developed their own myths and rituals around the labyrinth. They were dug in turf, carved in stone and paved into temple floors. From Africa, to Scandinavia, Ireland to Asia, Arctic Russia to Northern America, several variations of the design emerged. In the middle ages the great Gothic Cathedrals of France developed the most complicated formations involving eleven circuits and incorporating complicated sacred geometry into their intricate designs. Pilgrims would end their pilgrimage when they reached the centre.
