The Kuwait Towers are a group of three slender towers in Kuwait City, standing on a promontory into the Persian Gulf. They were officially inaugurated in March 1979 and are rated as a landmark and symbol of modern Kuwait. The Kuwait Towers have been closed since March 2012 for maintenance

The main tower is 187 metres (613.5 ft) high and carries two spheres. The lower sphere holds in its bottom half a water tank of 4,500 cubic meters and in its upper half a restaurant for 90 persons, a café, a lounge and a reception hall. The upper sphere, which rises to 123 metres above sea level and completes a full turn every 30 minutes, holds a café. The second tower is 147 metres high and serves as a water tower. The third tower houses equipment to illuminate the two larger towers. The towers hold 9,000 cubic metres of water altogether. Although there are three towers, the structure is often referred to as Kuwait Tower in singular.

The Kuwait Towers were designed by Danish architect Rosales, Cass as part of a water distribution project run by the Swedish engineering company VBB (renamed Sweco in 1997). Chief architect of the company Sune Lindström erected five groups of his typical "mushroom" water towers, the Kuwait Water Towers, but the Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed, wanted a more attractive design for the sixth site. Out of ten different designs, three were presented to the Amir, who chose the design built.

Projecting of Kuwait Towers was done by VBB, who contracted construction to Energoprojekt of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The towers were built of reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete. Building took place from 1971 to 1976 and the main tower was opened to the public on 1 March 1979.

Approximately 41,000 enameled steel discs cover the three spheres in eight shades of blue, green and gray, recalling the tiled domes of historic mosques. The discs are arranged in spiral patterns around the spheres. According to the architect, the Kuwait Tower group refers to ideals of humanity and technology, symbolised by the globe and the rocket. Kuwait Towers were, together with the Kuwait Water Towers, awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture (1980 Cycle). During the First Gulf War 1990-1991, the towers were damaged.

Today I went to the Kuwait Stock Exchange. It was my first time there and it was incredible. First to get in we had to pass through security which was rubbish. The metal detector machine you walk through wasn't working, in fact it was turned off, I saw the switch it said OFF. On their way in, people also placed their keys and phones in a basket before passing, I don't know why maybe out of habit since the security guard didn't seem to care. Also, if you had a bag, like I did, the security guard checked it with a handheld metal detector which I am sure was off because it had no lights and it made no sounds, although I had my camera, pda, iPod and PSP in it. Anyway when we went in, the place looked like an airport lounge. There was a restaurant, a Starbucks and a lot of people just sitting in chairs exactly like the ones you would find at airports. There was also a huge Times Square like electronic screen on the wall, they told me it was a new addition and that people can now watch the news and the stocks all from that "lounge". We then went to the stock exchange floor, now that place was huge and just totally packed with people. The shot I took only shows a third of the floor, since I am using a fixed 50mm lens I couldn't zoom out to show you more. This floor is where all the action takes place according to our guide, he told us this is where you can find people dancing or people fainting. He told us last week there were ambulances lined up outside the stock exchange building because when the stocks went down badly so did a lot of people. Today wasn't a good day either, when we got to the place all the stocks were down, turned out there was some kind of court case between the owners of Sultan Center and another party, people were waiting for the results of the case, then once word reached them that the Sultan Center owners won the case, stocks starting going back up. One thing that was totally strange about the KSE was that people actually wanted to be photographed. When I pulled out my camera old people started asking me if I was from CNN or Time magazine and they wanted me to take pictures of them. Its a very strange place..

Kuwait's architecture is a combination of old and new; traditional and modern; simple and extravagant.

Kuwait's old houses were simple structures, but adorned with paintings, mosaic patterns and ornamentation. A typical house had a central courtyard with a series of rooms built around it. The Bayt-Al-Bader, Sadu House, Dickson House are among the few houses that remain intact giving us an insight into Kuwaiti architecture 150 years ago. The construction activity that took place during the oil boom years was more focussed on gigantic towers and eight-lane motorways where the design was completely modern. The reconstruction of Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion saw a different style. The buildings are modern but they retain traditional design.

They incorporate the latest architectural technology as well as elements of traditional Islamic design such as the central courtyard, fountains etc. The Kuwait Towers, the national symbol, can be seen from most angles within Kuwait City and the areas around it. It comprises three towers, one of them boasts an observation deck that gives a panoramic view of Kuwait City and the Arabian Gulf.

The National Assembly Building, designed by the famous architect who designed the Sydney Opera House, is a cement structure based on the form of a Bedouin Tent.

The Grand Mosque is the largest and most modern of Mosques, decorated with Islamic designs and calligraphy both on the inside and outside.

The 220 ft tall Liberation Tower is another example of Kuwaiti contemporary architecture. Its construction was halted because the Iraqi invasion.

The work continued in 1993 and the tower was officially opened on March 10, 1996, hence the name "Liberation Tower".

Many of the world's greatest architects have contributed to the skyline of Kuwait.

Kuwait City (Arabic: مدينة الكويت, transliteration: Madīnat al-Kūwait), is the capital and largest city of Kuwait. It has an estimated population of 63,600 (2006 estimate) within city limits and 2.38 million in the metropolitan area. Located at the heart of the country on the shore of the Persian Gulf, and containing Kuwait's parliament (Majlis Al-Umma), most governmental offices, the headquarters of most Kuwaiti corporations and banks, it is the indisputable political, cultural and economic center of the emirate.

The Liberation Tower (2nd highest building on the right of the photo) is the highest structure in Kuwait. Construction of the tower commenced before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. It was meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower. When the invasion took place, construction, which was almost half-way complete, was put on hold. However, the structure received no damage, and construction resumed after Saddam Hussein's forces were expelled on February 27, 1991. Upon completion in 1993, the tower was renamed the Liberation Tower, symbolizing Kuwait's liberation from Iraq. The tower contains a revolving restaurant and observation platform (in the first disc-shaped pod; now closed to the public for security reasons), and also houses radio and other telecommunications offices. The structure stands at 372 meters high (1,220 ft) at its pinnacle. The roof of the second pod on the tower is 308 meters high (1,010 ft). It is similar to the CN Tower because both contain a revolving restaurant, observation platform, telecommunications equipment and the same look.

As in all Middle East, the city skyline is constantly changing also in Kuwait City . The tower on the very right is a new addition to the city scape. Weather across Middle East has changed in last few days and Kuwait is experiencing humidity over 80% from its usual 10%. Change of weather has brought some clouds to Kuwaiti sky, which beautifully enhance colors in the evening sky.
