Kuwait City (Arabic: مدينة الكويت, transliteration: Madīnat al-Kūwait), is the capital and largest city of Kuwait. It has an estimated population of 63,600 (2006 estimate) within city limits and 2.38 million in the metropolitan area. Located at the heart of the country on the shore of the Persian Gulf, and containing Kuwait's parliament (Majlis Al-Umma), most governmental offices, the headquarters of most Kuwaiti corporations and banks, it is the indisputable political, cultural and economic center of the emirate.

The Liberation Tower (2nd highest building on the right of the photo) is the highest structure in Kuwait. Construction of the tower commenced before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait on August 2, 1990. It was meant to be called The Kuwait Telecommunications Tower. When the invasion took place, construction, which was almost half-way complete, was put on hold. However, the structure received no damage, and construction resumed after Saddam Hussein's forces were expelled on February 27, 1991. Upon completion in 1993, the tower was renamed the Liberation Tower, symbolizing Kuwait's liberation from Iraq. The tower contains a revolving restaurant and observation platform (in the first disc-shaped pod; now closed to the public for security reasons), and also houses radio and other telecommunications offices. The structure stands at 372 meters high (1,220 ft) at its pinnacle. The roof of the second pod on the tower is 308 meters high (1,010 ft). It is similar to the CN Tower because both contain a revolving restaurant, observation platform, telecommunications equipment and the same look.

As in all Middle East, the city skyline is constantly changing also in Kuwait City . The tower on the very right is a new addition to the city scape. Weather across Middle East has changed in last few days and Kuwait is experiencing humidity over 80% from its usual 10%. Change of weather has brought some clouds to Kuwaiti sky, which beautifully enhance colors in the evening sky.

I finished college in 1981 and had my first fulltime job. I taught as an elementary school teacher in Kuwait that fall. I went with a classmate from home and new friends who were new hires too. It was the first time we'd been overseas. The world seems like a much different place.

These images are rough due to the age of the photographs. Over time, I may do a bit of editing on these.

This scene adjacent to the Arabian Gulf, is the heart of area (SHARQ) , the center of the capital, which includes many of commercial centers and public institutions.

I first taught elementary school students English and Science in Kuwait. I was at Al-Bayan School from 1981 to 1983. These were some photos taken during my time there.

The State of Kuwait (i /kuːˈweɪt/; Arabic: دولة الكويت‎, Dawlat al-Kuwayt) is a sovereign Arab nation situated in the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south, and Iraq to the north. It lies on the northwestern shore of the Persian Gulf. The name Kuwait is derived from the Arabic "akwat", the plural of "kout", meaning fortress built near water.[5] The emirate covers an area of 17,820 square kilometres (6,880 sq mi) and has a population of about 2.7 million.[6]

Historically, the region was the site of Characene, a major Parthian port for trade between India and Mesopotamia. The Bani Utbah tribe were the first permanent Arab settlers in the region and laid the foundation of the modern emirate. By the 19th century, Kuwait came under the influence of the Ottoman Empire, and after World War I, it emerged as an independent sheikhdom under the protection of the British Empire. Kuwait's large oil fields were discovered in the late 1930s.

After Kuwait gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961, the nation's oil industry saw unprecedented economic growth. In 1990, Kuwait was invaded and annexed by neighboring Iraq. The seven month-long Iraqi occupation came to an end after a direct military intervention by United States-led forces. Around 773 Kuwaiti oil wells were set ablaze by the retreating Iraqi army resulting in a major environmental and economic catastrophe.[7] Kuwait's infrastructure was badly damaged during the war and had to be rebuilt.[8]

Kuwait is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government, with Kuwait City serving as the country's political and economic capital. The country has the world's fifth largest oil reserves[9] and petroleum products now account for nearly 95% of export revenues, and 80% of government income.[10] Kuwait is the eleventh richest country in the world per capita. In 2007, it had the highest human development index (HDI) in the Arab world.[11] Kuwait is classified as a high income economy by the World Bank and is designated as a major non-NATO ally of the United States.[12

صرخة رفض مدوية أطلقها الشعب الكويتي بجميع قبائله وطوائفه ومن حكامه ومحكوميه، هذه الصرخة جمعت الشرفاء والاحرار من القادة والشعوب العربية والاسلامية والعالمية على كلمة سواء اسمها «تحرير الكويت» ونصرة شعبها الوفي لتراب وطنه ولقيادته الشرعية ونظامه السياسي الدستوري الديموقراطي

لقد تحررت الكويت منذ اليوم الاول للغزو العراقي الغاشم، بدءاً من تلك الصرخة المدوية في وجه جيش العراق الغادر والخائن لشرفه العسكري ولأمتيه العربية والاسلامية ومن سانده من عرب اللسان والمصالح والمال والحقد والحسد، ثم تبعها التصدي والمقاومة من ابطال ضباط وافراد الجيش الكويتي والحرسين الاميري والوطني، وتبعهم رجال ونساء المقاومة الكويتية الشعبية الباسلة، التي أربكت العدو وأفشلت خططه واهدافه بالقبض على القيادة الشرعية ورجال الدولة او السيطرة التامة على البلاد والعباد.. بل أدخلت المقاومة الكويتية الشعبية اشد الرعب والخوف كل ليلة في قلوب ضباط وافراد الجيش العراقي الغاشم، ومن والاهم من منظمات عربية مأجورة، وكان اشدها ليلة ركوب جميع ابناء الشعب الكويتي سطوح منازلهم بالتكبير والتمسك بالوطن وبالامير وبقيادته الشرعية الوحيدة! كما استطاعت المقاومة الكويتية الشعبية الباسلة نقل معاركها الى عمق الاراضي العراقية، ورصد ونقل كل المعلومات عن الجيش العراقي وتجمعاته وأنواع اسلحته وحالته ووضعه مباشرة الى المخططين العسكريين في الرياض. فلم يشعر الجيش العراقي الغاشم خلال فترة احتلاله الكويت (7 اشهر، من 2-8-1990 حتى 24-2-1991)، بالاستقرار والراحة على الرمال الكويتية المتحركة، رغم عدده الكبير.. (اكثر من 500 ألف عسكري) بأسلحته الفتاكة وبطشه وارهابه!

لقد احسن ابناء الشعب الكويتي ادارة وطنهم وشؤون افراده المدنية، وفي توفير كل ما لزم للعيش والاستمرار في الصمود والتصدي والتحدي البطولي. هدف واحد كان لكل كويتي وكويتية داخل الكويت او خارجها، سواء كان حاكما أو قياديا سياسيا او كان محكوما وقياديا شعبيا، هو «تحرير الكويت وشعبها بأي ثمن»! فلم يجد المحتل العدو العراقي الغاشم في جسد الشعب الكويتي الطاهر «عضوا واحدا» يناصره ويتعامل معه او يخون وطنه وشعبه وقيادته الشرعية!

لقد اظهر الشعب الكويتي وأنتج في العصر الحديث «ملحمة بطولية»، عناصرها الايمان بقضيته ووطنه، والوفاء لقيادته الشرعية، ومعنى التضحية بالنفس والمال بما قدمه من كوكبة طاهرة من ابنائه وبناته الشهداء الابطال «611 شهيداً و26 شهيدة، من شاب وشابة ومسن ومسنة وطفل وطفلة» وعدد كبير من الضحايا والمصابين والمفقودين ومن خيرة ابنائهم، وهم الاحياء الذين يرزقون عند ربهم في جنة الخلد والعلا، والشافعون لأسرهم في يوم التناد. الاعظم عند الله تعالى

About : The Kuwait Towers are three towers of reinforced concrete in Kuwait City. The main tower is 187 metres high and serves as a restaurant and water tower. It also has a Viewing Sphere which rises to 11123 meters above sea level and completes a full round turn every 30 minutes. The second tower is 145.8 metres high and serves as a water tower. The third tower houses equipment to control the flow of electricity and illuminates the two bigger towers. The towers were designed by Sune Lindström and Malene Björn and were built by Energoprojekt, a company from Belgrade, Serbia. They opened to the public in March of 1979. The towers were damaged heavily by the Iraqis during their occupation of Kuwait from 1990 to 1991. In 1992, after the liberation of Kuwait City during the First Gulf War, Vic Clarke of Nottingham UK abseiled the Kuwait Water Towers during structural surveys. Mr. Clarke was introduced into Kuwait by Mr. Michael Stewart, of The Stewart Group International, also from Nottingham UK. There was substantial shell and bullet damage to the exterior of the towers. The interior damage was mainly to electrical gear, mostly lift equipment. Some of the large triangular glazed panels shown in the photograph, were also damaged by shell fire. wiki
