The tree unmoving and connected to the earth, and rooted in it's true home likely knows more from the passage of time, and movements so slow as to be imperceptible that we only begin to glimpse in our old age... #KnowThyself #Contemplation #spirituality #BackToNature
Created Nov. 4, 2018 for the "Seriously, Selfies" challenge in the "Shock of the New" Group.
The Ancient Greek admonishment "Gnothi Seauton" translates as "Know Thyself" or "Know yourself" in more common parlance. It hung over the doors of Delphic Temples, specifically Apollo's Oracle at Delphi, and was the prime admonition for all who would seek to acquire true and profound wisdom. That self that's to be known is NOT the self of our everyday minds. The ceaselessly chattering monkey that has something to say about everything ... It is something much deeper, ultimately transpersonal and utterly without ego. Not an easy undertaking, getting to know that.
Thanks to Liz Mack for the prompting me to do this image. While I'm not a big lover of selfies or self portraits, that is, doing them of myself, with Liz's nudging I did this one up for her challenge in SOTN.
Other than two versions of my face being used here this is also a self portrait in that all the Photo Artistic practices that I currently do are included: Pano-Sabotage, Layering, Photo Manipulation, Text, Punctuated Bordering, Drawing or "Looping Lines" and Stellated Mirroring, each of which are signature elements in my work of 2017/18.
One cityscape Pano-Sabotage image was used as the base and background on which to build the composition. The rest used two very different selfie photos, taken years apart, one straight but moody, the other in my Mayan Shaman Halloween costume. Two aspects of a self.
There are many selves strewn about this image and one secret image of Ganesh as well. His inclusion adds a very personal autobiographical note referencing my time in India as a guy in his 20's. I have both profound and hilarious stories revolving around the elephant-headed God of New Ventures, Inscriber of the Vedas, Lord of Mirth and Laugher and Blesser of all who show him joy. There are many aspects to ourselves as we are in this very moment, as well as the many selves we've been through our lives.
"To pass beyond the countless worlds,
The Eternal Wheel ...
Ceaseless tides of selves
Ever passing away
Before our eyes"

Music Link: "Batu Bolong" - Mirror System, from their album "N-Port". Mirror System are Steve Hillage & Miquette Giraudy, both of whom are Classic Gong alumni. I chose this particular piece as it's haunting, entrancing, transporting other-worldliness is very high up on the list of music that gives me shivers up the spine. It also evokes the East, where I feel and have felt much more at home than in the West.

When I saw the photo (on the bottom) on mainemomma2007's flickr site, I told her that it reminded me of my "baby's" hand photo!
It seems like just yesterday Ali was that age, doing the same thing!
She Flickrmailed me asking me to do a dip, she put it together, and here it is!!!
I couldn't think of a title, but it sure does warm my heart!!!
Thanks K!!!
Temet nosce.
Conocerse a si mismo.
Know thyself.
Se connaître soi-même
Life, and humans, are complex concepts.
Ali flew home Thursday evening (no classes on Friday!)
It's so good to see her!!!
She has a project due next week and since our weekend is jam-packed, she had to work on it tonight - very late... actually eeeaarrrrlllyyy Friday morning!
Assignment = visual self portrait with a written paper or something like that...
She worked on her hands, then I took the photo. (I also had to help her with her right hand since she's right-handed)
I think there's quite a bit more to it, she has to get it printed, do a presentation, blah blah blah - school project!
I'm just glad she's home and her homework was FUN!!
Here she is... knowing herself!
Edit* Front Page EXPLORED!!! Thanks everyone for the great comments!
Highest rank #14!!! I think she'll do well on her project!!!
Located on Alia Baroque's Athan Sim is Marcus Inkpen's beautiful sculpture entitled Know Thyself

Your childheart came here to to write a story
The one you are meant to live
With all its cast of characters and dramatic unfoldings
Romances, heartbreaks, adventures,
Triumphs and tragedies
Heroism and horrors,
We choose such a variety of themes
Beware the greater narrative
Which contains the multitude in Itself
Where we can lose ourselves
Pay too much attention
Get sucked into the plotlines of others
Become unwitting extras
Extracted from our own Imagination
Incentivized with fame and fortune
Lured into ambitious participation
The mind is relinquished for a shiny prize
As the heart is denied again and again
The storyteller is slowly poisoned
Into submission away from the one true purpose
To be the designer of Its own destiny
Zombie- like compliance activates massive herding
Confusion coaxes obedience through lies
Storylines are smashed apart and rerouted
Comfort and order become cages of refuge
The few monopolize the ignorant many
Darkness and fear breed distrust
Hopelessness spreads its false inevitability
But always travelling in that glorious night sky
Filled with the blaze of a million suns
Your star waits to lead you home
Re-activate the inner creative urge
Resusitate that inner playful child
Eager to pour out with epic proportion
While staying true to the undying quest:
“Know Thyself”

ArtQuesting is simply the process of allowing a freeflow process to happen while exploring inner thoughts and feelings. The message of this piece was personal and revealing but there is always a greater message that pours out for me to share with you. Today's encouragment is to remind you that your story is there inside of you always waiting to be experienced and shared. The power of the whole Universe and the symbol of the star are always there to draw from. Remember John Lennon's famous song line:
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you will join us and the world will live as one."
To dream from the heart and bring them forth is our birthright and the more we practice, the more profound life becomes.
Sending out love to all of you!!!
Remember, if you are not actively imagining the world you want, there are those all too ready to build it for you and cast you involuntarily into its design:

She flew beyond the mountains
where none could see her cry
while such pain echoed inside her
and refused to show her why
She melted into woodwork
kept low the longing light
and sang what others taught her
and tried to do what’s right
There came a point of breaking
when the weight could bear no more
and the question burst out crying:
What was all the singing for?
At first so small and choking
a song emerged from this
as voice and pathways opened
from a place of unknown bliss
Her heart had found its homeland
filled with peace and happiness
that gave her strength and courage
to face her pain and stress
The tree of life alive in her
now had a chance to grow
where generations gone before
bore pain they could not show
From that place of endless songs
she raised her voice to bring
the blossoms back into full bloom
to feel Eternal Spring

An exploration of four generations of my matrilineal family line through collage while honoring their journeys, their sacrifices, their dreams both fulfilled and unfulfilled. Reflecting on inter-generational pain and trauma, I consciously release those patterns which I may still be unconsciously carrying and in doing so add the image of a bird which to me represents the voice and the courage to express freely. Through artistic exploration, this voice finds its resonance and clarity. A poem pours through my heart reaffirming the unity of life and our capacity to retroactively fortify not only our story but also the narrative of others who do not or did not have a safe place to express their Truth.
I am a student of and meditate on the Four Eternal Truths as revealed in “Ancient Secrets of Success” by Tulshi Sen. Little by little, the unveiling happens and the way opens up to listen to the heart and give the mind its rightful place in my life. In the book, the question arises…if you don’t know who you are, then how will you know where to go or even where you can go if you don’t know where you come from?
Before studying these principles I would never have thought that making a collage and writing a poem can release so much joy and insight into my own life. My well-being and artistic explorations continue to flourish as a result of these ancient practices.
They said a good way of gaining self-knowledge,
was to talk to yourself while looking in a mirror,
But without my glasses on I couldn’t see too well
and I wound up thinking I was someone else.
Then I met somebody, who by the same process,
had convinced themselves they were me
and seeing as I didn’t have my glasses on
who the hell was I to argue?

Dedicated to Steve: www.flickr.com/photos/sbh/ . I've known him almost as long as I've been on Flickr and value his friendship and the range of his offerings, usually colourful and beautiful captures of nature. Hence this selection for him!
I have not posted much since the last flickr fiasco. I still check my photostream every day but the lack of activity has been very discouraging. I now get my photographic conversation fix on Facebook. Maybe I will try posting something evderyday to see if things ever improve here.
We bought this cabinet card at a local antique show last week. I must say there are several things about it that puzzle me. It is giving me vibes of an amateur or unskilled itinerant photographer. An older woman sits in what I think is a farm yard. She holds a white flower on a long stem in her left hand and a book in her right hand. A table and chair have moved outside. A large book rests on the table and a stuffed rag-dog sits on the ground. What does it all mean?
I posted a detail of the cover and a facebook poster discovered that it is "Know Thyself: The Science of Life; or Self-Preservation". It is described as a Medical Treatise on Nervous and Physical Debility, Spermatorrhea, Impotence, and Sterility with Practical Observations on the Treatment of Diseases of the Generative Organs" - 1881. I found this a mystery until I learned that this book was used by 19th century midwifes.
Does anyone else find this as strange as I do?
I thought I knew myself pretty well after being on this planet for 40 years. I consider myself grounded and self-assured. But I was working under a distorted view of things recently and at this place, on this day in particular, this event in my life profoundly changed me. This is taken on the way to the Temple of Hope. In retrospect it is the single photo that defines me. It is me, broken and different, looking at myself in the reflection of a man. Yet the whole world and horizon lies beyond me.
Within each of us
Thrives a powerful place
Bursting with potential
And Promise.
We dance in a garden
Of the most exquisite kind
When we allow
The dreams of our heart
The freedom to be felt
Formed
Experienced all at once.
Here's to Dancing Through 2014: The Best Year Ever!!!!
I've had the wrist tat for a while and got the tricep one recently. Doug from One Shot did the wrist and Wakako from Soul Patch did the tricep. View it LARGE to see what it says.
Since a lot of people have been asking me...
•Nosce Te Ipsum means "know thyself" in Latin.
•The feather tattoo is a tribute to Nujabes, a hip hop producer and DJ in Japan. He died earlier this year (Feb 26) in the hospital after being involved in a car accident. The lyrics I chose are from verse one of Feather, which was produced by Nujabes and features Cise Star and Akin from Cyne. What Cise Star is talking about in these lines is how he's going through the daily routine of living in which one has to see the current events going around them and understand how to interpret them. The The Golden Rule states that you should treat others as you would like to be treated. In following that model it is easy to see all the hurt and despair that goes on simply due to the fact we as people generally don’t abide by this simple rule.
"Knowledge of the self is the mother of all knowledge. So it is incumbent on me to know my self,
to know it completely, to know its minutiae, its characteristics, its subtleties, and its very atoms."
~ Kahlil Gibran
Next to the importance of knowing one's self is the goal of understanding others. The two are inexorably linked and provide balance and harmony in life and relationships.
Here's my 2 bits-worth for today:
1) I seek balance in my life and strive to know myself and others. This statement is pretty self-explanatory.
2) I am a gregarious introvert. This may need some explanation.
This fact I initially gleaned from the book, Please Understand Me: Character and Temperament Types, a psychology book (but written for the lay public) by David Keirsey and Marilyn Bates which focuses on the classification and categorization of temperaments and personality types. From this book I further learned of Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers of the famous "Myers-Briggs Type Indicator" mother/daugter duo, and their landmark work in identifying the characteristics of personality.
I've taken the MBTI at least twice with trained administrators in workshop situations and I come out the same each time.
I have one foot in two temperament camps (E/I and N/S) that royally confuse the issues. According to results, I am an E/I N/S F P. The F and P are hardwired; the E/I and N/S are constantly in flux.
More later when I'm feeling more gregarious! ;o)
