The date is sometime during the middle of 1937 and the the Nakajima B5N2 A.K.A. "Kate" takes off for the first time to fly for the Imperial Japanese Navy! 😱 The B5N2's primary role was being a standard carrier based torpedo bomber for much of World War II. Believe it or not, her national origin is Japanese. 😛 The manufacturer who created her is the "Nakajima Aircraft Company" and the company managed to build 1,149 units for the Imperial Navy. Although, Kate was much faster than her allied counter parts, the American Douglas TBD Devastator and the British Fairey Swordfish and Fairey Albacore Torpedo biplanes, Kate was becoming obsolescence by mid 1941! Unfortunately, the B5N managed to fight for the Imperial Navy throughout the entire Second Great War due to the delayed development of her successor, the B6N! During the early stages of the Pacific war, the aircraft managed to achieve some successes in locations such as Pearl Harbor , the Coral Sea, Midway and the Santa Cruz Islands! The two greatest successes for the B5N2 was sinking the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor and the B5N2s also managed to sink 2 US aircraft carriers named the USS Lexington And and the USS Hornet. A B5N2 also managed to heavily cripple the USS Yorktown which lead to it's sinking by a Japanese submarine I-168! 😱 The B5Ns eventually got replaced by the B6Ns for being the primary aircraft in the Navy's Frontline, but it continues service and flies secondary roles such as training, target towing, and anti-submarine warfare. The B5Ns were also used as bombers during the unsuccessful defense of the Philippines in October of 1944, suffering severe losses! 😱 Later in the war, the last surviving ones was used for Kamikaze attacks! 🙊

It is the 1st of April, 1939 and the Mitsubishi A6M Zero takes off for the first time but the model was not introduce to the Japanese Imperial Navy until the 1st of July, 1941.The first Zeros which were 15 pre-series of the A6M2 went into operation with the 12th Rengo Kōkūtai sometime in the middle of July, 1941. On September 13th, 1941; the Zeros scored their first air-to-air kills when Lieutenant Saburo Shindo attacked and shot down 27 Soviet built Polikarpov I-15s and I-16s apart of the Chinese Nationalist Air Force without any loss to themselves! 521 were active in the Pacific while roughly 328 were in first line units. During the attack on Pearl Harbor is when U.S. pilots encountered the Zero for the first time and the exact model they encountered was the carrier-borne Model 21. It's TREMENDOUS range of over 2,600 km(1,600 mi) allowed the aircraft travel farther away from it's carrier than originally expected! During 1941, the Zero quickly gained a FEARSOME reputation in the Pacific because she could easily dispose any current aircraft the allies were sending to that region. The Zero has even proved itself to be a difficult opponent for the Supermarine Spitfire and for RAF pilots. The techniques the RAF used against the German and French equipment proved to be suicidal. Allied pilots eventually came up with a new strategy on how to engage with a Zero because the traditional turning dogfight was 9/10 fatal for the allied airmen. It was better to attack from above by committing a high-speed dive, firing a few burts while passing the Zero, committed steep climb and repeat. It usually only took a few rounds from the heavy machine guns to bring down the EXTREMELY fragile Zero. This new tactic was HEAVILY used against the Japanese Zeros during the defense of Guadalcanal by Grumman F4F pilots. This tactic was made possible during the defense because of a early warning system that consisted of Coastwatchers and radar. The Japanese Imperial Navy lost many highly experienced pilots during the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway which caused the Japanese Carrier Air Force to suffer a HUGE blow, one that would cause them to NEVER fully recover.

for we can fly, we can fly ♫♪♫
Ballooning was revived as a sport in the 1960s. Balloons are defined as types of aircrafts that become airborne due to the lift or buoyancy supplied by a gas that is less dense than the air surrounding the balloon. Although the first balloon flight in 1783 was buoyed up by heated air, hydrogen was soon found to be superior to hot air for filling a balloon. Hydrogen has inherent buoyancy while hot air has the tendency to decrease its ability to supply lift as the air cools. When a gas balloon is launched, it will fly up until its average density exactly equals that of the atmosphere around it. The pilot discards some ballast to go higher and releases some of the buoyant gas through a valve to descend.
When hot air ballooning first became a sport, the flights were short due to the heat source being left on the ground. However, before too long, small lightweight propane burners were created that could be carried on the balloon. The most popular forms of balloons to fly are the cheaper hot air balloons, which consist of three components. The first component is the balloon itself, which holds the hot air used for the lift, constructed of nylon or polyester. The second component is the basket that hangs by cables from the balloon envelope usually made of wicker. The third component is the fuel system and burner of the balloon attached to a frame over the pilot’s head. The hot air balloon lifts when the propane burners heat the air inside and descends when the pilot cools the gas.
The training for a balloon pilot is much like the training for any other aircraft, including equipment operation, how to handle emergencies, launch flight and landing techniques. He must understand the complex micrometeorological conditions that control wind and respond accurately to the weather conditions appropriately.
Some pilots may enter sport ballooning for competition and follow the competitive ballooning rules established by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI). But most sport ballooning is done for the sheer pleasure, and beauty of the flight and is less governed by the goal of winning. Following the rules of aerodynamics and safe procedures influence the pilot more than any contest rules. Balloonists compete in local, regional, national and world championship events. World records are established in the categories of altitude, duration and distance. The best weather for ballooning is when there is high pressure and light surface winds. Usually within three hours of sunrise and sunset is favorable. In addition, the type of terrain affects the way the wind flows. Flat expanses are very different than wooded, mountainous areas.

For example: Cleopatra used saffron—a source of the color yellow—for seduction. Extracted from an Afghan mine, the blue “ultramarine” paint used by Michelangelo was so expensive he couldn’t afford to buy it himself. Since ancient times, carmine red—still found in lipsticks and Cherry Coke today—has come from the blood of insects.

The area around Lübeck, today a large city with a population of more than 200,000, had been settled by Slavs since the 7th century. Slavs had a settlement north of the present city called "Liubice", which was razed by the pagan Rani tribe in 1128.
15 years later Adolf II, Count of Schauenburg and Holstein, founded the modern town as a German settlement on the river island of Bucu. He built a new castle, first mentioned as existing in 1147. Adolf II had to cede the castle to the Duke of Saxony, Henry the Lion, in 1158. After Henry's fall from power in 1181, the town became an Imperial city. Emperor Barbarossa ordained that the city should have a ruling council of 20 members. With the council dominated by merchants, trade interests shaped Lübeck's politics for centuries.
In the 14th century, Lübeck became the "Queen of the Hanseatic League", being by far the largest and most powerful member of that medieval trade organization. In 1375, Emperor Charles IV named Lübeck one of the five "Glories of the Empire", a title shared with Venice, Rome, Pisa, and Florence.
Conflicts about trading privileges resulted in fighting between Lübeck (with the Hanseatic League) and Denmark and Norway – with varying outcome. While Lübeck and the Hanseatic League prevailed in conflicts in 1435 and 1512, Lübeck lost when it became involved in a civil war that raged in Denmark from 1534 to 1536. From then on Lübeck's power slowly declined. The city remained neutral in the Thirty Years' War, but the devastation from the decades-long war and the new transatlantic orientation of European trade caused the Hanseatic League – and thus Lübeck with it – to decline in importance. However, Lübeck still remained an important trading town on the Baltic Sea.
