Are dragons real? Since they do not live on the physical plane, scientists cannot trap and dissect them. Yet magicians and psychics who have explored the astral realms know first-hand that dragons do indeed exist, and that they make very powerful co-magicians. Dragons tap into deeper currents of elemental energies than humans. Because of their ancient wisdom, dragons are valuable contacts to call upon when performing any type of divination, such as the laying out of tarot cards. Tarot decks and other divination tools seem to fascinate them. The Celtic Dragon Tarot is the first deck to use the potent energies of dragons for divination, magickal spell working and meditation.

St John the Baptist, Danbury, Essex

I sat in Chelmsford Cathedral for a while. What a lovely church it is. What has a town like Chelmsford done to deserve it? I wish it were in Ipswich. I'd arranged to meet my friend John near the cathedral at 10.30, although I fooled him at first by standing on the wrong corner. Eventually the conundrum was solved (how did we manage before mobile phones?) and we headed east as it began to rain, towards Danbury.

Open. Rather an austere exterior, set at the highest point of its little town, with a tall spire and a 19th Century south aisle remarkable for the fact that it is entirely built out of puddingstone, obviously dredged from the nearby Blackwater. The weeping rain did little to improve its aspect. But the signs were good: One at the gate, a full three feet high, says Church always open in daylight hours, and at the west doors, where you go in, a metal sign bolted to the door reads This Church is Open Every Day - Please Come in. inside the porch under the tower it said You are always welcome here. Okay, okay, I thought, I get the message. Don't overdo it!

The star here is the wide range of bench ends. There are good medieval ones in the East Anglian style, and (dare I say it?) even better ones from Scott's 19th Century restoration, and others made by villagers through into the 1930s, depicting the usual traditional subjects, but also local girl guides, owls, elephants, sphinxes and so on. All jolly good.

There are three wooden 13th century effigies of knights, though not as impressive as those at Little Horkesley, and a beautiful relief of the Annunciation from the 1920s. Carl Edwards' 1955 east window for Powell and Sons is full of sapphire and emerald light, and very successful, showing that the workshop could still produce the best after some dodgy moments between the wars.

The otherwise dull 19th century restoration is a bit overwhelming, but it does help these jewels stand out. I liked it a lot.

THE St. John’s Knights made their way down south to take on the Notre Dame Royals in their scheduled IIAAG high school boys’ volleyball match at the Royals home court. With both teams ready to take on one another, the Knights looked prepared to get in and get out of the match without wasting any time. At the end of the match, the boys from Upper Tumon picked up a straight set 25-19, 25-23 victory.

St. John’s opened the match making an immediate statement and opening up a 3-0 lead backed by monster kills from Reed Meyer and T.J. Atalig. Notre Dame was able to trim their deficit after back-to-back errors by the Knights. However, Meyer took matters into his own hands and with three assists from setter Argie Flores, the Knights upped their lead to 6-3.

The three-point lead eventually became a 14-6 game as the Royals ran into some trouble committing numerous unforced errors. After allowing Notre Dame to score four points to make it a 14-10 game, the Knights sparked another run. With the consistency of Meyer and Atalig’s hitting, St. John’s put themselves within three points (22-16) of closing out the first set.

Notre Dame wasn’t ready to give up as middle Sage Afaisen roofed Atalig to give the Royals a bit of light. A committed error by the Knights’ Daniel Del Carmen and a kill by Afaisen made it a 22-19 game. That was as close as the Royals would get as the Knights took the opening set victory with three straight points.

Much like the opening set, St. John’s started the second set taking a 6-2 lead backed by the duo of Atalig and Meyer. Notre Dame responded in fashion and made it a one-point game after Afaisen continued to make his presence felt at the net. Later in the set, two straight kills from Atalig increased the Knights lead to 12-8.

Rally

However, the Royals called a timeout and regrouped. It was from that point on that Notre Dame staged a rally with precision hitting from Afaisen and Austin Tenorio. Eventually the Royals equalized the game at 15-15.

Both teams battled back and forth tying the game twice more. With the score 19-19, ND committed two errors to give their opponents a 21-19 lead. St. John’s eventually set up match point after a backcourt kill from Atalig. However, a feisty Royals squad scored three straight points after two kills from Nathan Sablan and Tenorio. Despite closing within one, the Knights’ Meyer answered and ended the match on a shot that found the floor to end the game.

Meyer and Atalig led the Knights’ offense combining for 13 kills and nine aces in the match. In the losing effort, ND’s Afaisen recorded four blocks and three kills, while Tenorio tallied four kills and three aces.

IIAAG high school volleyball action resumes tomorrow with the Knights scheduled to take on the John F. Kennedy Islanders. The Royals return to the floor on Friday as they play host to the Father Duenas Friars. Game time for both matches is at 5:30 p.m.

Wartburg Knight 1974. The Wartburg 353 has its origins in a 1938 DKW design, which was produced postwar at an old BMW factory at Eisenach that fell behind the Iron Curtain in postwar Europe. Early cars were sold as 'EMW' with a red propellor badge. In 1954 the manufacturer became VEB Automobilwerk Eisenach (AWE), and from 1956 the 'Wartburg' brand was used. The 'Knight' was launched with its square body in 1966 as the 353, but underneath the smart exterior there was nothing radically new. The 991cc 3-cylinder 2-stroke beneffited from steady evolution rather than revolution, and gave reasonably front drive performance. The name 'Knight' was only used in Britain and other export markets.
