I want to get applause for taking this photo - I suffer terribly from vertigo so while taking this photo my knees were like jelly and I was holding on to the roof behind me for dear life (no matter the safety railing). The things you put yourself through for the possibility of a good shot...
Fort-la-Latte (originally known as Roche-Goyon) was built in the 14th century. The work was begun in 1340 on orders from Étienne III Goyon, seigneur de Matignon, with the donjon (keep) built in 1365-1370. The castle was besieged in 1379 and saw action during the French Wars of Religion (fought 1562-1598). It was viewed as a strategic point as late as the 19th century.
The place went through some heavy restoration work in the first half of the 20th century, when the castle had lost its military significance and was more interesting for its medieval charm. The exterior has even been used as a backdrop for a movie: The Vikings from 1958 starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis (though a historian would point out that a 14th century castle most likely never saw any Vikings at all).
Another sunrise photo not far from my hotel at Reduto do Portinho on Madeira.
This scene was taken a few meters above the last spot and a little earlier in the morning. The sun has just peeked over the horizon and the low hanging rain clouds are just beginning to glow.
It's amazing how calm this scene exudes. This is so very different than it actually was up there on the cliff. There is no sign of the wind and rain here. Well, it's not raining at the moment.
The image design was quite difficult here, since there was not much space and therefore not many possible variations. For this reason, the photo does not belong to my best work. Still, I like it enough to want to share it with you.

Diese Szene entstand ein paar Meter oberhalb des letzten Spots und noch etwas früher am Morgen. Die Sonne ist eben hinter dem Horizont erschienen und die tief hängenden Regenwolken beginnen gerade erst zu glühen.
Es ist erstaunlich, wie viel Rühe diese Szene ausstrahlt. Das ist so ganz anders, als es tatsächlich dort oben auf der Klippe war. Von dem Wind und dem Regen ist hier nichts zu erkennen. Na gut, im Moment regnet es ja auch nicht.
Die Bildgestaltung war hier recht schwierig, da es nicht viel Platz gab und damit auch nicht viele Variantionsmöglichkeiten. Aus diesem Grund gehört das Foto auch nicht zu meinen besten Arbeiten. Trotzdem gefällt es mir genug, um es mit Euch teilen zu wollen.

After some time of exloring the surroundings of the Ponta da Piedade, I finally have decided for a spot, where I am going to wait for the sunrise. I am willing to admit that I felt a bit uncomfortable so close to the edge. But less because of me and more because of my camera.
Suddenly she is there, the sun and the rocks are showing me their red colour the first time.
From now on its starting to become more busy, because now its all about capturing all the motives I already found on my way back to the lighthouse, before the sun is getting to high and the light is loosing the warmth.
Nachdem ich jetzt eine geraume Weile die Gegend am Ponta da Piedade erforscht habe, habe ich mich schließlich für eine Stelle entschieden, an der ich auf den Sonnenaufgang warten will. Ich gebe zu, so nahe an der Klippe war ich etwas unruhig. Nicht so sehr wegen mir, sondern eher wegen meiner Kamera.
Und auf einmal ist sie da, die Sonne und die rote Färbung der Felsen ist zum ersten mal richtig zu sehen.
Ab jetzt wird es etwas hektisch, denn es gilt auf dem Rückweg zum Leuchtturm die ganzen Motive einzusammeln, die ich bisher gefunden habe und dies bevor die Sonne zu hoch steht und das Licht seine Wärme verliert.

Just like you imagine a medieval castle, perched on a rock, overlooking the sea.

On my trip through south France, one of the things that was fascinating me most were this small villages in the middle of the mountains, like this one here called Peillon. Built like a fortress and clung closely to the mountains, they are talking about unsecure times in the past. That construction form is called "Village Perché" that is translated as "Village on the riff" ore in colloquial speech "Eagles Nest".
Eine der Sachen, die mich bei meiner Fahrt durch Südfrankreich am meisten fasziniert haben waren die kleinen Dörfer mitten in den Bergen, wie hier das Dorf Peillon. Gebaut wie eine Festung und eng an den Fels geschmiegt lassen diese Dörfer auf recht unsichere Zeiten in der Vergangenheit schließen. Man nennt diese Bauweise "Village Perché" was wörtlich übersetzt als "Dorf auf der Klippe" umgangssprachlich auch als Adlernest bezeichnet wird.
Only two hours ago, all You could see on that place was a black surface. Only bit by bit the silhouettes of the cliff and the landscapes behind became visible. At this moment, the main colours here were grey- and blue-tones. The colour green was born about half an hour ago close after the first glance of yellow, red and orange appeared at the sky. Only three minutes ago, when the light of the sun has conquered the edge of the horizon, this masterpiece became completed. All what I have done was watching and marveling.
Noch vor zwei Stunden war an dieser Stelle nur eine schwarze Fläche zu sehen. Erst nach und nach wurden die Silhouetten der Klippe und der dahinter liegenden Landschaft sichtbar. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren die vorherrschenden Farben Grau und Blautöne. Die Farbe grün wurde erst vor einer halben Stunde geboren, kurz nachdem am Himmel der erste Schimmer von Gelb, Rot und Orange erschien. Vor gerade einmal 3 Minuten als das Licht der Sonne die Kante des Horizonts bezwungen hatte, war das Meisterwerk vollendet. Alles was ich dabei getan habe ist zuzuschauen und zu staunen.

zeigt sich der Meeresboden bei Niedrigwasser. Es sieht aus wie Eiweißschaum, ist aber harter Kalkfelsen, der durch das Wasser geformt wurde und im Sonnenlicht leuchtet. Der Tidenhub ist erheblich und reicht bei Hochwasser bis an die Felswand heran.

Das Kleinwalsertal (auch: Kleines Walsertal) ist ein schönes Gebirgstal im Westen Österreichs an der Grenze zu Deutschland und nur über Deutschland (Oberstdorf im Allgäu) erreichbar. Die Berge dieses Tales gehören zu den Allgäuer Alpen.

Kleinwalsertal is a beautiful small valley in the western part of Austria. Even though it belongs to Vorarlberg/Austria, it only can be accessed by road from Bavaria/Germany due to the mountains. The mountains around this valley belong to the Allgäu Alps. The Hoher Ifen is very close to the German border and some trails in this area cross the border several times.

Scylla the mythical sea monster in the Straight of Messina. He lived in the caves on the cliff. Greek mythology warned sailors of the perils. On one side of the straight is Scylia the six headed monster. On the other side of the straight is Charybdis the giant whilrlpool. You must choose between the lesser of two evils or caught between a rock and a hard spot can be taken from this. Today I'm doing something I would usually avoid. I’m posting a photo of the same subject than the day before, a moss covered tree at the Eistobel in the Allgäu Alps (at least it’s not the same one). Not only the trunk but also the branches are covered with thick moss. You can find many of these natural sculptures around here. I liked this one most because of its position directly next to the abyss. In the background You see the river Oberer Argen rushing down at one of many waterfalls in that valley.
Heute mache ich mal etwas, was ich sonst vermeide. Ich zeige ein weiteres Foto vom selben Motiv wie am Vortag, einen von Moos umschlossenen Baum am Eistobel im Allgäu (zumindest nicht den selben). Nicht nur der Stamm sondern auch die Äste sind dick mit Moos behangen. Hier in der Nähe sind einige dieser natürlichen Skulpturen zu finden. An diesem hier hat mir seine Lage, direkt am Abgrund, am besten gefallen. Im Hintergrund rauscht der Obere Argen in einem der vielen Wasserfälle ins Tal.
Am Ende der Klippen am rechten Ufer, jenseits der Brücke Sidi-M'Cid, befindet sich dieses Denkmal, das Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts zum Gedenken an die im Ersten Weltkrieg gefallenen Soldaten errichtet wurde. Das Sahnehäubchen ist wirklich die Aussicht von der halbrunden Terrasse vor dem Denkmal am Rand der Klippe in 635 m Höhe. Der Panoramablick über die gesamte Stadt Constantine und die Umgebung ist absolut magisch und dank einer Orientierungstafel aus dem Jahr 1936 legendär.

MONUMENT AUX MORTS – Constantine - WAR MEMORIAL – Constantine Constantine At the end of the cliffs on the right bank, beyond the Sidi M'Cid bridge, stands this memorial, erected in the early 20th century to commemorate the soldiers who died in the First World War. The icing on the cake is truly the view from the semicircular terrace in front of the memorial, perched on the edge of the cliff at a height of 635 meters. The panoramic view over the entire city of Constantine and the surrounding area is absolutely magical and, thanks to an orientation panel dating back to 1936, legendary.

Sonnenaufgang vom Valhall - Valhall ist eine ca. 40 Meter hohe steile Klippe am See Orlunden in der Nähe von Olofström. Die Aussicht ist beeindruckend, allerdings schürt der Ort durchaus vorhandene Höhenangst
What a wonderful view point - well-known from the Marlboro commercial, which, in addition to cigarettes, primarily sold an attitude to life of adventure and freedom...
We parked our yuppie SUV a few miles from the viewpoint and hiked the rest of the way - more than worth it.
And as if we wanted to shoot a promotional video, an off-road vehicle appeared after us - brand - "there can't be any rock blocking my way" - and fittingly with a strapped surfboard...
The driver - brand hippie from the 70s - then calmly sat down with a folding chair on the edge of the cliff, smoked a cigarette (probably Marlboro) and enjoyed the view with loud music from Pink Floyd - "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".
The whole thing was like from another planet and so we enjoyed this unique view with the best music - how crazy does that sound :-) and indeed it was...

Was für ein wunderbarer Aussichtspunkt - bekannt aus der Marlboro Werbung, die ja neben Zigaretten vor allem ein Lebensgefühl von Abenteuer und Freiheit verkauft hat...
Wir stellten unseren Yuppie SUV ein paar Meilen vor dem Viewpoint ab und wanderten die restliche Strecke - mehr als lohnenswert.
Und als hätten wir ein Werbevideo drehen wollen, tauchte nach uns ein Geländewagen auf - Marke - "mir kann doch kein Fels den Weg versperren" - und passend dazu mit einem aufgeschnallten Surfbrett...
Der Fahrer - Marke Hippie aus den 70ern - setzte sich dann in aller Seelenruhe mit einem Klappstuhl an den Rand der Klippe, rauchte eine Zigarette (wahrscheinlich Marlboro) und genoss die Aussicht bei lauter Musik von Pink Floyd - "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Das Ganze war wie von einem anderen Stern und so genossen wir diese einmalige Aussicht bei bester Musik - wie verrückt klingt das :-) und es war tatsächlich so...

Es war frisch und windig an diesem Tag an der Steilküste Cabo de Sao Vicente. Nur mit langsamen Schritten konnte man sich am Rand der rund 60 Meter hohen Klippe bewegen um die Möven bei Ihrem geselligen Treiben zu beobachten. Manchmal ließ der Wind für einen Moment nach und so konnte ich dieses Portrait machen.
It was fresh and windy that day on the cliffs of Cabo de Sao Vicente. It was only possible to move slowly along the edge of the 60 meter high cliff to watch the seagulls at their activities. Sometimes the wind died down for a moment and so I was able to take this portrait.
Il faisait frais et venteux ce jour-là sur les falaises du Cabo de Sao Vicente. Il était seulement possible de se déplacer lentement le long du bord de la falaise de 60 mètres de haut pour observer les mouettes dans leurs activités. Parfois, le vent tombait un instant et j'ai ainsi pu faire ce portrait.
