I am not motivated to cook for myself.....rather, I cook for my animals.....and by definition, that puts me in THE OLDER GENERATION.
On the Silestone counter tops I have arrayed three of my favorite small appliances......the Aroma rice cooker, the Cuisinart slow cooker, and above them the awesome Breville toaster oven--my oven of choice for smaller dishes. (I love my Bertazzoni gas range, but seldom use its oven....I could be happy with a gas stovetop, and a separate oven.)
The Silestone is antibacterial, and impermeable to stain or odors.
It does not require any maintenance, unlike granite or marble. I love the soft grayness of its color combined with my earthy yellow ochre walls, always sunny and inviting even of dark days.
Even though I am not much on cooking, the kitchen remains a pivotal center of my homemaking activities. I'm told my placement of the LG washer/dryer combo in the kitchen is a more European choice......the architect who drew the plans wanted a closet for the laundry stuff, but I insisted on it being located on an outside wall for easy venting, avoiding the humidity issues of our very humid Mobile environment.
Artsand House MOC is a flirt with brutalism. A modern home with art gallery, spa and large bedroom with a garden view. Quadrangular concrete house bodies meet organic nature. A dog is waiting for the owner to come home.
In August 2019 I displayed some of my houses at the Kloss pÄ Kloss exhibition in HÀssleholm, Sweden. A visitor asked me if I didnŽt have any brutalist houses. I said no and explained that it probably would be too boring. It would be hard to create the dynamics needed to make a modern house MOC interesting. After the exhibition I started thinking and decided to give brutalism a chance. Not purist brutalism, but rather contemporary architecture flirting with brutalism...
House of Three is a contemporary Scandinavian family home. I've tried to catch contemporary Scandinavian architecture in colours, floor plan and roof design. The interior and furniture in inspired by IKEA and other Scandinavian designs. Comfortable living suitable for a small family.

Modern kitchen in black, dark tan, tan and LBG. Fridge and freezer, oven, stove and sink.
Modern living inspired by old open-air-bath architecture as the house is standing on pillars in water and is offering an open space for bathing in the middle.
You enter the terrace through the rock on the backside of the house. On the terrace you find a small outdoor kitchen and table with chairs made of ladders and steering wheels. Kitchen, reading corner, livingroom and sauna with shower on first floor.
The house is entered from the terrace. A high plated wall goes though this floor leading from the hallway to the master bedroom and bathroom. Here you sleep with a 180 degrees sea view.
The floor below is reached by a floating staircase attached to the wall. A corridor with a resting chair (made of life preservers) and glass cabinet combines two parts of the house. One of them is hosting a kitchen and dining area. The other one is hosting a livingroom. Here you also find a small sauna and shower room with a ladder leading directly down to the water.
This is my third house built into a rock. The other two are called "Green Rock House" and "Calmwater Cliff House".

Not sure what I originally like about this kitchen. Maybe all the storage. I think I liked the timber cabinets but I think it could date?

Perhaps not a jump so much as a wave. I have sat with these napkin dispensers many times but today I "saw" it. What appealed to me today? The curve of the lid; the inside out effect of seeing the mechanism; the sleek design, 'snappy' font and the spelling and finally the flourish over TORK. All these elements seemed to come together today.
The solo mexican wave by one napkn clinched it.

Displayed in meticulous detail inside the Smithsonianâs National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., Julia Childâs Kitchen is one of the most iconic and beloved museum installations dedicated to American culinary heritage. These photographs offer a vivid, immersive view into the very kitchen where Child filmed three of her acclaimed cooking shows between 2000 and 2001âincluding Juliaâs Kitchen Wisdomâbefore donating the entire room, including its structure, tools, and appliances, to the Smithsonian Institution.
Originally installed in her Cambridge, Massachusetts home, the kitchen reflects Childâs philosophy that cooking should be joyful, personal, and accessible. It was custom-designed in the early 1960s by her husband Paul Child, who raised the counters to suit Juliaâs 6-foot-2 height and helped build an environment that encouraged her intuitive approach to cooking and teaching.
These images reveal the kitchen from multiple vantage points: the familiar pegboards of copper pots and pans arranged precisely by Paulâs hand-painted outlines; walls lined with bookshelves holding Juliaâs well-loved cookbooks and scripts; and mid-century appliances such as the Garland gas stove and vintage wall oven. The famous yellow Formica table is surrounded by mismatched chairs, and even the utensils appear to be mid-recipe, frozen in time.
Every item is authenticâfrom the mixing bowls and whisks to the timers, mixers, and notes taped to the fridge. The Smithsonian took great care in preserving the kitchen exactly as Julia last used it, reassembling it piece by piece to maintain its sense of vibrancy and lived-in creativity. The installation doesnât just honor a legendary chef; it tells a story about mid-20th-century domestic life, media, and the democratization of food knowledge.
Julia Child wasnât just a cookâshe was a teacher, television pioneer, and cultural bridge between French culinary traditions and American home kitchens. This space stands as a monument to her legacy. Through these photographs, viewers can experience the intimacy of her creative environment, where camera crews once roamed, and where generations of viewers learned to be fearless in the kitchen.
Visually, these photos are warm, detailed, and filled with layered texturesâfrom the golden glow of the lighting to the shadowplay of ladles and strainers, the tight focus on domestic tools, and the careful arrangement of the mise-en-place. The images evoke not just a physical space, but the personality and purpose that filled it.
Whether you're a food historian, a museum enthusiast, or a longtime admirer of Julia Child, these images serve as a portal into one of the most influential kitchens in American culture.
