I've always wondered what my custom LEGO train kits would look like as a "proper" retail product.
I've been selling instructions for these custom kits for a couple of years online at my website brickdimensions.com. Inevitably, I am often asked "how much does it cost with the bricks?" or "can you sell me the bricks?" etc. I've been reluctant to sell these models as complete kits with the bricks, stickers, etc. due to the labour involved and low volume. However, someone did persist with a substantial offer to buy several kits and I decided to give it a try.
This gave me the opportunity to go through process and identify the true impact on time and energy required to fulfill an order. I spent some time automating the Bill of Materials consolidation, fetching pricing, and making Bricklink orders and developed a set of Google sheets with custom scripts to help me with future procurement.
Having gone through the process, it does take more time than I would have liked. However, the lessons learned from this experience should make future kit-ups much faster.
As much as I would like there to be a market for custom LEGO train kits, I am not convinced that it is big enough to make commercial sense. I would love to be proven wrong--but at least I had fun "prototyping" what such a product offering would look like!
This is Kit Kat the other feral cat that lives in our yard. Kit comes quite close to me now but any sudden movements or noise and he runs. I'm thinking he and Gato Sin Nombre are males. They are both territorial and will face off and make the usual cat noises at each other.
I went to see if the fox kits that I photographed a few days ago were still there. I got quite a bit closer than before and this kit appeared and after a few moments of me standing still it decided to take a closer look at me and was about eight feet (2.5 m). Very cute.
INFAMOUS LANDMARK
Chow Kit Market is recognised as one of Malaysia’s most infamous landmarks. Located at the northern end of Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, it is divided into two halves: the first half is home to the city’s unofficial Red Light District, while the other part is KL’s most popular local market. Even though it is not as well known to tourists, Chow Kit Market is definitely exciting. However it is not a place for the faint hearted, with vendors who are pushy and it takes a thick skin to get serious bargains here.
The spotlight on Chow Kit Market focuses on its main street: a lively and culturally-enriching scene. Although the area may not be the most kosher quarter of KL it plays host to the largest wet market in Malaysia. Also known as the Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, this rustic makeshift market is a kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances. The bazaar is shaded by oversized, colourful umbrellas and divided into a wet and dry section with the colourful souk commonly frequented by locals, especially the neighbourhood’s Malay community.

With fox kits coming out and exploring more, I was hoping that I would get one on my camera trap, and finally did this past week. You can really see how young this one is based on how big the ears are compared to the head and body, and that the fur is still kinda fuzzy. Taken with a D3300 24mm 1/60 ISO 400 f/13 with one SB 28 at 1/8th on the right about 8 feet away, there was a second light on the left that died.

Kit Fox, my last photos of 2016! The only wild one I had ever seen was crossing the road in front of the car last year when I was driving to Tucson at 6 am. A friend told me that there was a Kit Fox near the campsite. I was very excited! I armed myself with my camera, flash , tripod and associated gear for an evening of shooting. I was out most of the day and assumed the extra camera battery was charged, but... Then, I use my flash so rarely, I tend to forget everything about it between one time and the other. So, in general, the photo quality was disappointing. We used a flashlight to focus on the fox so the camera auto-focus could work. To our surprise, there were two foxes, not one! Anyhow, my batteries are now charged, and I will practice, practice, practice with the flash before I go back! and wait until it is a bit warmer. We seem to be getting into another cold snap. Les kits d'invasions sont des mosaïques pré-assemblées scellées sous plastique (numérotés et parfois signés par l'artiste)
On en trouve très peu dans les rues. Les personnes qui ont eu la chance de s'en procuper préfèrent généralement les garder chez eux vu la valeur que ça prend au fil du temps.
Il existe actuellement 18 kits différents. Un kit "#12 Home" est toujours visible dans une rue de Paris.
Invasion kits are pre-assembled mosaics sealed in plastic bags (numbered and sometimes signed by the artist)
There are very few of them in the streets. People who have been lucky enough to get them usually prefer to keep them in a safe place given the value it takes over time.
There are currently 18 different kits. A kit #12 "Home" is still visible on a street in Paris.
