Before there were any Tescos or Carrefours in Malaysia, before hypermarkets became prevalent and ubiquitous, there was only Pasar Chow Kit, the original hypermarket of Kuala Lumpur. It is older than the formation of Malaysia itself, and it lays claim to being the biggest morning wet market in KL. It’s sprawling and haphazard stalls have been supplying the legion of household kitchens, ‘gerais’ and restaurants in the city with essential ingredients since it was first opened in 1955 by the then Sultan of Selangor. Located in the heart of KL, the area which was once a booming shopping and entertainment district in it’s heyday, has now become a menagerie of mixed cultures and influences, playing host to a myriad of interesting and often idiosyncratic personalities. Sordid and morally ignoble characters, such as drug users, transsexuals and crooks mingle around only to vanish in the shadows of honest tradesmen and food mongers.
Back when I was a kid in the 80’s, I used to hate coming here for grocery shopping with my parents. The cement and asphalt floor of the wet market area were spotted with small potholes and these would be filled with filthy, brackish water. The place was always crowded elbow to elbow, making it hard to maneuver around. As a result, I always ended up coming home from a Chow Kit excursion with foul and grimy feet. The market was a very noisy place too, filled with all the shouts and yells of sellers making their spiels to the throngs of prospective customers. To me at least, mention Chow Kit and probably the thing I’d remember the most would be those nasty feed-fouling potholes.
But, there were things that I liked about the market as well. There is a ‘dry’ section in addition to the ‘wet’ section which I loathed. This dry section was where utensils and dry foodstuffs were sold, and on the right day and given the right type of weather, this portion of Chow Kit market would be filled with the loveliest light rays filtering through the red, yellow and blue umbrella tops of the stalls, and minuscule dust motes would be dancing around in those rays. This section had a nice musty smell to it too. It was pleasant.
Like everyone else, my parents stopped going to Pasar Chow Kit when the local Giant opened it’s doors. Now, almost 20 years later from my childhood trips to Chow Kit Market, I find the place to be essentially the same as it was, only everything seemed to be way smaller than I remembered it to be. A much needed trip back down memory lane, that’s what this particular photo outing gave to me.
And yes, I’m happy to report those pesky potholes are still there.

Warren, Connecticut. We have a gray fox adult who comes through our yard from time to time, probably lives on the hill behind our house. He or she is a spectacularly beautiful animal. Two weeks ago this "kit" appeared under one of our bird feeders by the kitchen and stayed for a few days.
This kit was born last spring so is about 4-5 months old and is no doubt venturing out into the world to figure things out. It had no problem with me moving around inside the kitchen window and even looked up at me a few times. Maybe a bit too comfortable with humans but no doubt time and learning will iron that out. It spent the majority of the day in one of our firewood piles and was only under the feeder, looking for voles and mice in the morning and at dusk.
I so much wanted to have a longer lens and to have not shot through a dirty window but alas, this is what I got.
We have many red foxes around and they're quite common here, but this little kit and its parent are the first gray foxes we've seen.
Spectacular animals.
I found this Red Fox kit sleeping on a sunny hillside back in June. He eventually got up and walked around, trying to figure out if I posed any threat. He never did decide, so he slowly wandered off just to be safe.
Fiz este para minha sobrinha, ela gostou tanto que passou a festa de aniversário toda vestinda, uma pena que não posso colocar a foto dela vestida pois não pedi permissão a mãe.
