Kit Fox, my last photos of 2016! The only wild one I had ever seen was crossing the road in front of the car last year when I was driving to Tucson at 6 am. A friend told me that there was a Kit Fox near the campsite. I was very excited! I armed myself with my camera, flash , tripod and associated gear for an evening of shooting. I was out most of the day and assumed the extra camera bettery was charged, but... Then, I use my flash so rarely, I tend to foget everything about it between one time and the other. So, in general, the photo quality was disppointing. We used a flashlight to focus on the fox so the camera auto-focus could work. To our surprise, there were two foxes, not one! Anyhow, my batteries are now charged, and I will practice, practice, practice with the flash before I go back! and wait until it is a bit warmer. We seem to be getting into another cold snap. We got the new team kits today. It's growing on me, although I'm not a fan of the blue/gray/orange look. You can see that the sleeves are cut for someone with muscles. Sorry to turn this into a vanity blog, but I'll try to get some better pictures of the race later.
Race Report:
CRCA club race, 30 miles.
Medium length version: I could have used more sleep. Perhaps I should not have stayed up to watch Battlestar Galactica, but, man, that Starbuck. This morning I felt that I needed to do something twice, but was only able to do it once. So I felt a bit, um...full, let's say, and my muscles were feeling hard and a bit tired. This is my most intense and longest training week so far this year.
The field was about 50 riders. At some point a Merrill and a Sanchez Metro rider got away. I must have been in the back at that point because I did not know they were off the front. I made an effort one lap (6 miles) later to catch them, working with a Foundation rider but we didn't have it. In fact, Foundation was a big disappointment all race long. As the biggest team, they should have done the work to catch the break.
In New York, you hear time call outs like "30 seconds!" then "35 seconds!," then "Cuarenta!, Cuarenta!" and finally "uno minuto!" as the break gets further and further away. At uno minuto, the pack gave up and settled in for the field sprint. I had 2 teammates in the race, Chris Yack and Tony Markovina, and we managed to stay near the front for the final lap. Chris had perfect position and gave me a perfect lead out, but just too far from the line. I had 10 seconds of glory as Chris jumped away from the pack and dropped me off with a 5 yard lead at the bottom of the hill. "You got it man, don't stop kickin'!" In fact, I did not have it, but I lead the field up the bottom half of the hill before I was passed by a swarm of better rested sprinters to finish mid-field.
Nevertheless, the team looked good and we rode pretty well, boding well for future races when we're ready and have more experience as a team.
