Kinetic: Relating to, caused by, or producing motion.

These are called “Kinetic” photographs because there is motion, energy, and movement involved, specifically my and the camera’s movements.

I choose a light source and/or subject, set my camera for a long exposure (typically around 4 seconds), focus on my subject and push the shutter button. When the shutter opens I move the camera around with my hands...large, sweeping, dramatic movements. And then I will literally throw the camera several feet up into the air, most times imparting a spinning or whirling motion to it as I hurl it upward. I may throw the camera several times and also utilize hand-held motion several times in one photo. None of these are Photoshopped, layered, or a composite photo...what you see occurs in one shot, one take.

Aren’t I afraid that I will drop and break my camera? For regular followers of my photostream and this series you will know that I have already done so. This little camera has been dropped many times, and broken once when dropped on concrete outside. It still functions...not so well for regular photographs, but superbly for more kinetic work.

2018P52 Week 29: Kinetic/Camera Toss

This was a scary challenge! A camera toss isn't something I want to do often, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I had half a dozen shots that I liked, but had to pick one for the challenge. I like the warm contrast in this shot.

If you're wondering, these are the vertical blinds in my bedroom. It was relatively safe... my camera landed softly on my bed!

My other camera toss shots are on my photostream page.

Took a trip down to Nethertown in Co. Wexford today. Was amazed at the sheer size of each wind turbine there.

Shot details: Nikon D200, Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8G lens, handheld, polarising filter, aperture priority, three bracketed exposures at F8. HDR + tonemapping done in Photomatix Pro.

For the monthly ARAF competition, we had to have a go at kinetic photography, in the hope to get a pleasing abstract. Throwing your camera in the air, swinging it round or possibly other ways of creating violent movement.

I tried throwing the camera in the air (while holding on to the strap), but the camera did not like it.

Tried a few other things, but feared ruining my camera, so ended up waving it about like a woman possessed, which seemed the safest way.

This is the most appealing image I got out of it.

I'm afraid kinetic photography is not for me.
