Gopher tortoises are considered a keystone species in the longleaf pine ecosystem because their burrows provide important habitat and shelter to a wide variety of species that occur in the Coastal Plain. The longleaf pine ecosystem is fire dependent, and tortoise burrows provide shelter to animals fleeing the frequent fires.
The Keystone Building (center) is one of two Stolp Island works by architect George Grant Elmslie. It is a relatively rare example of the Prairie School style used for an office building, and is listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places. This building currently houses several businesses.
