This charming bluestone building, adorned with product advertising both hand painted and mirror-backed, is the Queen’s Head Hotel.
Established in 1838 and receiving its licence the following year, this hotel is one of the oldest continuously operating businesses within South Australia. It is a prime example of the colony’s development since establishing the city of Adelaide in 1836, providing a meeting place for locals and travellers, clubs and religious gatherings.
Unlike many of its counterparts, the Queen’s Head has remained a largely original, ground-level only structure, making it especially precious. Countless hotels of similar age about the city would be expanded upon or replaced entirely, with their capacity increased to encourage enhanced trade and competition with one another - a trend that rose significantly during the late 19th century.
The Queen’s Head remains in great condition and continues to opera the today. Note that remnants of the painted West End advertisement has survived.
