Kermode "Spirit" Bear, Hartley Bay, BC

This State Heritage listed police station with residence and lock-up was completed in 1864 for a cost of £385. The builder was J Wheatley. In 1866 a tender for erecting a verandah was given to William Bundey.

The building replaced a former station in Kermode Street which was built in 1850. This station is built of bluestone with a hipped slate roof, now corrugated galvanised iron.

*North Adelaide Police Station

Four members of the Labour Party (Hon J P Wilson, and Messrs W D Ponder, R P Blundell, and E A Anstey paid a visit on Tuesday afternoon to the North Adelaide police station, in Archer Street, to inspect the quarters which the constables stationed there have to occupy. The inspection was made in consequence of reports that had been made to one of the Parliamentary representatives mentioned that the accommodation provided for the men was both inadequate and insanitary. What the visitors found upon a personal inspection went to prove almost entirely to the contrary.

They were received on arrival by Sergeant O'Connor, the officer in charge, and conducted by him over the public portion of the premises. The police station was built nearly forty years ago, and, like other premises of a similar date, is unpretentious in design, and, in some respects, hardly complies with modern hygienic principles. But otherwise the quarters with which the men in blue are provided are comfortable and, so far as the visitors could see, ample for present requirements. On the day of the visit they were also found to be in a fairly clean condition, although a coat of paint on the woodwork and a little whitewash here and there on the walls would considerably brighten up the surroundings.

There are a sergeant and 10 constables attached to the station, but of these seven are married and live in private quarters outside. The other four, who are single men, sleep together in a room at the station. This room, although not lofty, is well ventilated and fairly well lit and the men are provided with spring mattresses for their beds.

The office in which public business is transacted is a fair-sized room, comfortably furnished.

The only thing the visitors felt called upon to make an adverse comment about was the bathroom or rather, the absence of one. The men are provided with a shower beneath the back verandah, and if this were enclosed with an inexpensive iron guard all would be satisfactory. The officer in charge lives with his family in a residence situated some distance to the rear of the station, and he and they are thus ensured a degree of privacy that it is not the privilege of every public servant similarly situated to possess. The visitors spent about half an hour looking over the premises.
