Turkana village of Parkati, near Tuum, Kenya.

A Nilotic-speaking people, the Turkana inhabit the arid territories of northern Kenya near Lake Turkana and South Sudan. The village of Parkati is located in the southern part of this territory, near an area inhabited by the Samburu.

Protected by the poverty of their region of residence, they have long remained outside the influence of the main foreign trends. Nomadic pastoralists adapted to an almost completely desert area, they can practice additional fishing in Lake Turkana. Livestock plays a central role in their culture. . Goats, sheep, camels, donkeys but especially cattle make up their livestock. In this society, livestock not only provides milk and meat, but also serves as an exchange value for the payment of bride price.

The Turkana are polygamous. The family unit is made up of a man, his wives and children, and often his mother. Turkana society is structured into age groups and each man belongs to a specific age group. The Turkana have an intimate knowledge of the plants and products they use as medicines.

I thought it remiss of me not to include.... well at least up until this point..... any people shots. Kenya is a vibrant country with colour and movement everywhere. I love visiting places I've never been to before. Sure I've seen it on the tv but you're somewhat divorced from the day to day existence of it's inhabitants. Never has an adage been so true as 'travel broadens the mind'.

This is a market somewhere on the road between the nature reserves we travelled to. Don't ask me where. We did a lot of travelling but increasingly found that we really enjoyed this part of our trip as we got to see how Kenyan's went about their daily life. There was always something to see.

Thank you very much for your visits, comments, favorites, invitation. Good day to all of you

DP3Q6926 - Amboseli, Kenya, July 2018

Photo for NGYSA "Faces in the World". Took this photo many years ago while travelling in Kenyan. We had stopped at a small rural museum and while checking the outdoors displays came across a group of school kids who were visiting the museum. They were fascinated with my camera and wanted me to take their photo and show them their image. This photo still makes me smile, they had such joy and energy...can't help but wonder where their lives have taken them.

Kenya makes short work of France 34-0. Rugby Sevens Singapore 2018 at the National Stadium.

I knew going to Kenya I would come back home with plenty of different animal pictures, but I had also secretly hoped for at least one good "people" portrait......maybe of a fisherman or one of the locals selling their hand-made items. Then I ran into this sweet girl at the end of the road while waiting for my friends to pick me up. It was a Saturday and her mother was most likely working at this gated home.

She came over to see me and although neither of us spoke each others language, we enjoyed some time together and she was excited to see herself in my camera's viewfinder. I was also excited, because this was the portrait I was hoping for.

GETTY IMAGES CONTRIBUTOR SELECTED ON OCTOBER, 2011.

In between all the portrait assignments I have to edit these days, I must edit some more Kenyan birds as well, due to a presentation I've been asked to hold later on.

This is one of the birds that we saw most often - the superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus).

The African or Savannah buffalo is traditionally known as the meanest beast in the bush, prone to launch a killing charge at the drop of a hat. Although this is the natural reaction of almost any buffalo that is being shot at, many non-provoked, solitary males like the one in this image also do it. The most common species, a very large black-pelted grassland dweller, can weigh up to 1,750 pounds.

In South Africa, we were out for a night drive following a Pride of Lions, which were tracking a herd of Cape Buffalos. One of the large lions jumped on the back of a male buffalo and tried to bite through his spinal cord. The buffalo headed at full speed toward a tree with low hanging branches and knocked him off.

Understandably angry, the buffalo turned around and charged our 4x4 at full speed. The guide slammed the gearshift into reverse and the gas pedal to the floor. We went flying backwards over rough ground. The buffalo having made his point backed off on his charge.

It was one of the most exciting experiences on the trip, but not one that I would want to repeat.

Older males are generally forced out of the group. They tend to be solitary or join bachelor herds. You might hear guides refer to them as "old dagga boys". The word "dagga" is Zulu and means mud - it refers to the fact that they like wallowing in mud

Elle pigia elle...

Kenya Airways 787 Dreamliner departs out of Mumbai on its inaugural flight.

In January 2009 (one year ago), UN proclaimed that Kenya's drought and food shortages were expected to last until March 2010, seven months longer than previously projected.

Unhopefully, they were right.... and it is hitting the economy of the country, since the death of a large number of animals posed a risk to the country's tourism industry that is famed for its wildlife.

The most affected parks and reserves were the Amboseli National Park and Tsavo National Park that recorded the highest number of collected animal carcasses. It is estimated that the parks lost 40 per cent of animals.

But besides the animals, human lifes are in risk also. With no cattle, no harvest, no food, surviving is very hard.

And it is not just a problem for Kenya. Aid agencies estimate more than 23 million people will need food aid in the Horn of Africa region. It is becoming evident the inability of most African countries to address climate change impacts, a climate change they have created.
