This was before the War on Coal was lost. The TTI is no longer King Coal.

A few weeks ago I had an incredible experience with this Kentucky Warbler. There is a spot nearby with several on territory. I regularly hear them when hiking around, but seldom see them. In early June I heard one singing very close by and noted the spot. I returned several times and only caught fleeting glimpses. This is a furtive bird that can be hard to observe. It spends most of its time on or low to the ground in dense forest understory. Finally one day I got a good look, and observed it going to what I believe was its nest. It disappeared into the base of a dense clump of American beautyberry and remained for a brief time before setting out again. I returned later in the day in full camo. It was miserable sitting out there in all of that, but ended up being very rewarding. I staked out where I believed the nest to be and watched as the male would leave the area, hop around to various perches and sing, and then forage, returning with beakfulls of spiders, caterpillars, and other invertebrates. I spent a few hours out there and came away with some interesting images. I never did see the nest, but I didn’t want to go digging around in the dense underbrush and risk disturbing it or an incubating female. We're so lucky to have decent diversity of breeding warblers in the Pineywoods.

I recently spent a few days at Coeurs Fleurs Farm in Kentucky. This is another one of several beautiful cats there.

There are some warbler species I get more satisfaction photographing than others. They are all unique in their habits and responses. This is one of those.

Delicious grass…chomp, chomp, chomp

Brief looks at this elusive warbler yesterday. Went back today and others saw it but not us.

Geothlypis formosa

Unlike most songbirds, a male Kentucky Warbler appears to sing only one song type. He will sing the same one throughout his life. Although counter-singing males do not match each other's song types the way many bird species do, a male may match the pitch of a competitor's song.

Though rarely with much water on it, I really dig this cute little waterfall that is located just outside Daniel Boone National Forest property! Myself and Adam Thompson - The Serialphotog were lucky enough to catch it after a major rain event last month that had inundated southern Kentucky!

The barn to the right is a tobacco barn with its rectangular openings to control the temperature and humidity while the tobacco is cured, dried after being hung from rafters. The barn to the left cures some tobacco and stores equipment and supplies. Raising tobacco involves a lot dirty, sticky and hot work. Located in the western edge of Owen County in the Kentucky River Valley. The barns are painted a distinctive black to raise the temperature for curing tobacco

Here is a shy species of songbird, the Kentucky Warbler, photographed in New Jersey. If you look closely, this bird has bugs in its mouth, because at this time of year he was busy feeding his chicks.

3 Thoroughbreds walk across a paddock of rich Kentucky Bluegrass in the early dawn light at a thoroughbred farm near Lexington. Shot facing away from the sun so the horizon was still dark while the hillside was getting the early sunlight. I spent a lot of time driving around trying to find just the right farm at sunrise. Just before the sun came up there was some mist in the lower lying areas which makes for a great photo. Unfortunately I just couldn't get the right combo of mist and scene, and a lot of the farm fences basically butt right up against the road, making it pretty dangerous to try to pull over and shoot on the narrow side roads while the traffic whips by. Then I came upon this beautiful farm and the horses at first were sort of randomly walking and munching and then the leader decided to relocate and they fall in to line following across the hill. The symmetry of the three combined with the lines across the fresh-mown grass looked interesting to me. No mist or dramatic sunrise colors though :-(. I chose symmetry and horses over color for this one.

One of the most beautiful places in Kentucky, we just got home from there...

This Kentucky rancher is obviously wrangling his deere herd to ready for the long drive. The key is to get them to market without losing weight. In order to do that, the deereboys will let 'em meander and graze at least twice a day on the way. It will be a slow long drive but a lucrative one if they can keep the herd well fed.

Next stop, Dodge City. Yeehaw!

Kentucky Falls.

I stalked this bird for over 30 minutes to get this shot. Couldn't feel my hands or face afterwards. Worth it!

Heading north. We made it into Kentucky. It’s snowing at home and nasty. We think will try a few more days where it’s nice.
