Ide Hill offers impressive views of the Kent Weald, an area of semi-natural woodland lying on the steep sides of the Greensand Ridge with connections with the artist Samuel Palmer

Footpaths run along the ridge from east to west, with the thick flora occasionally allowing glimpses over mile upon mile of Kentish countryside away to the south.

Made up of ancient woodland dominated by oak and beech trees, at Stubbs Wood you’ll also find a lot of holly, whitebeam, ash, chestnut, hazel and rowan, set amongst a carpet of bluebells, wood sorrel and ramsons in spring.

Unusually for Kent, some areas of heathland are also present, made up of heather, bracken, bilberry, wavy hair grass and heath speedwell.

The site lies just a few hundred metres down Wheatsheaf Hill from Ide Hill, a National Trust woodland, and the two sites can be enjoyed together as part of a longer walk around the area, which can also take in a number of other woods and National Trust attractions.

It has one of only two piers in Kent, water sports, a promenade and a long stretch of pebble beach; what’s more, Deal beach is just a short stroll from a range of quirky cafes, unique shops and indulgent restaurants.

Fishing along the pier, crazy golf, paddling, swimming and sailing are all on the agenda in vibrant Deal, so roll up a beach towel, soak up the sights and start exploring this lovely coastal town

Once the first expansion north of the QEW by the town of Oakville, Kent Gardens has changed a lot since the mid-century. Although there are still weird pockets of those first homes and apartments.
