Special:

- The only way to distinguish a Tiger of an Alpine, is the V-8 signature graphic badge on the outside of the cars.

- This British-American design is for the most part credited to Caroll Shelby, based on an initial prototype by Ken Miles, code-named “Thunderbolt” and assembled assembled by Jensen Motors Ltd., Wolverhampton - UK.

- In honor of the land speed record accomplishment by Sir Henry O.D. Seagrave (1926 Sunbeam Tiger Ladybird 12-cylinder: 152.3 mph / 245.1 km/h), the vehicle was named “Tiger”.

- For 1965 there was an intermediate model: the Tiger Mark Ia Sports Roadster, 1,486 units bullt.

- It ’s commonly nicnamed “Poor man’s Cobra”, or ”a stiffened-up Alpine chassis-body”.

The Flying Shingle, as it was often called because of its low and flat visual aspect, was an MG-based special built by Ken Miles in California in the winter of 1954-55.

This is the only coil-sprung 427 Cobra to be raced by the Shelby American factory team. Ken Miles drove it at Riverside (shown), Laguna Seca and Lakeside, Australia, in 1965.

Display board from film "Le Mans 66" show at the Daytona race ... preparing the way to victory for Ken Miles :-)

Really love that film !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CSX2196 was the original 427 prototype, developed by Ken Miles based on a regular leaf-spring chassis.

The car made its racing debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida, co-driven by Miles and John Morton.

The car was wrecked in practice when Miles hit the only freestanding tree on the Sebring circuit. It was repaired overnight and started the race the next day, but failed to finish when the engine blew. Nonetheless the car clearly demonstrated that a 427-powered Cobra had great potential.

With the current interest in the movie Ford v Ferrari, it's nice to see the actual men characterized in that film.

The year description at the source states 1965 for this photo. Other photos in the series strongly indicate the location as Riverside International Raceway, where Shelby American performed their on-track testing.

From the context of the photos in the set, I also believe there is a very strong possibility that the young man at the left margin of the photo is Peter Miles, son of Ken Miles. In another photo, the young man is wearing a jacket with the word 'Cobra' on the back. Shelby American's driver Bob Bondurant on the right, an immensely talented and accomplished driver in his own right.

The legendary 427 Shelby Cobra, seen at Spa Classic 2017 recently - slightly modified to give it the Hot Wheels style :)

With the current interest in the movie Ford v Ferrari, it's fascinating to see the actual men characterized in that film and historical images of the car’s development.

The year description at the source states 1965 for this photo. This photo and others in the series strongly indicate the location as Riverside International Raceway, where Shelby American performed their on-track testing. The 'Champion' sign in the upper left was mounted onto a structure that spanned across the back straight at Riverside Raceway.

The car still shows the Borrani wire wheels that were fitted up to the 1964 season until they were replaced for 1965 by Shelby American with lighter Halibrand magnesium wheels. More details of the car’s development can be read here: www.thecarsource.com/shelby/gt40.html

That's Ken Miles with his hands on the rear tire. From the context of the photos in the set, there is a very strong possibility that the young man with his hands on the car's roof is Peter Miles, son of Ken Miles. In another photo in the set, the same young man is wearing a jacket with the word 'Cobra' on the back.

With the current interest in the movie Ford v Ferrari, it's interesting to see the actual men characterized in that film.

Here is Ken Miles in the No. 1 Car, one of the three GT40 Mk. II's fielded by the Shelby American team. Miles shared driving duties in the No. 1 Car with Denny Hulme. Their car was leading near the end of the race with the McLaren/Amon No. 2 car in 2nd place and the Bucknum/Hutcherson No. 5 car in 3rd. Ford’s desire to have a photogenic 1-2-3 photo finish, however, interfered with what should have been the natural result.

At the finish, three Ford GT40 Mk. II's came across the line as desired, but not in the order as expected. Due to positioning of the car’s at the end, the No. 2 car, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon was declared the winner of the race, instead of the Miles/Hulme car that was leading otherwise.

I tried to improve the photo from the Flickr site for The Henry Ford to improve its appearance.

Reading List for Members

The long-shuttered Mart 125 on 125th Street across from the Apollo Theatre.

The market was conceived by the city in 1979 as a way to get street vendors off the sidewalk and gain experience running brick-and-mortar businesses. It opened in 1986 with 50 vendors and closed in 2001 or 2002 after a long decline. The building has been vacant since. A documentary film was made about the place (I have not seen it).

There has been plenty of talk about what to do about the building, most recently in December 2022, but nothing has been done as far as I know.

At least that neon "T" keeps shining.

No ,i don't think you are, purposeful ,maybe.!

Well i like them anyway.

Birmingham City Parks Department ran at least one of these, albeit the 'Chevy' variant, in the late 50s/60s.

It was always well looked after and looked good in its dark blue livery.

This car is proving a mystery to me, in period Formula Three grids were populated with cars from well known manufacturers, but there was also room for a number of one off Formula Three cars, such as the Jomo, Vesey, Beagle and Northstar. This Vesey remains very active in Historic Formula 3 with the Jomo a little less so but there seems a shortage of information about these cars origins or period racing activities.

The Vesey badge (picture 141) seems to resemble a Bishops mitre (titfer tat - hat) which i am assuming indicates a conection between this car and the renowned Bishops Vesey School in Sutton Coldfield, were racers Greg mansell and KenMiles were educated

Christian Bale (Ken Miles), Matt Damon (Carroll Shelby), Ray McKinnon, Caitriona Balfe (Mollie), Tracy Letts (Henry Ford II), Josh Lucas, Remo Girone (Enzo Ferrari)
