Although the sunset wasn't spectacular I was delighted to see a sailboat moored in Keem bay. This is a very popular beach on Achill Island. We were camping on the island so I took a spin down one eve after little man fell asleep.
We were camping on Achill Island last week so I got a few opportunities to get out with the camera and drone.
This is a sunset over Keem. It's a pretty little beach involving a beautiful drive which is an experience in itself. In 2019 it got voted one of the prettiest beaches in the world and since them it's a bit overrun with instagramers and curious tourists.
The highest point you see is Croghan. At 688M it's a nice little hike and it's slopes decend righ down into the Atlantic ocean earning it the highest sea cliffs in Ireland and 3rd highest in Europe.
Keem Bay, at the western end of Achill Island, is one of the most picturesque bays in Ireland. It is accessible by road over a twisting clifftop route on the side of Croaghaun mountain. Keem Bay is virtually uninhabited (the only building is a former coastguard station) and provides a peaceful and magnificent retreat from the 21st century.
At the heart of Keem Bay is the beautiful fine sandy beach. This strand is bordered on two sides by cliffs; to the east by the slopes of Croaghaun mountain, and to the west by a spar called Moyteoge. At the top of this spar, at an elevation of about 200m, is a former coastguard watch-house. For hillwalkers, this spot marks the start of a a breathtaking 1.5km walk along the top of the cliffs of Benmore towards Achill Head, the most westerly point of Achill Island.
Keem Bay has a strong connection with fishing. It was the location for much of Achill's shark fishing industry during the 1950s and 1960s. At that time the basking shark was a frequent visitor to the waters around Keem Bay, and it was hunted for its liver oil which was exported from Achill to provide fine grade lubricant for the aerospace industry. Much of this fishing took place in currachs, the traditional canvas-covered wooden vessels of the west of Ireland. Keem Bay is most likely the location used by the artist Paul Henry when painting his famous canvas 'Launching the Currach' (in the National Museum, Dublin).

This is the view from a hill called Minaun (466M) on Achill Island. The views on a clear day are really amazing. Here I have framed a statue of our Lady with the really beautiful Achill head and keem bay in the distance. This time of year there are basking sharks swimming in that bay.
I have been to Rio btw and taken the trip up Corcovado. Not quite as busy at this location :-)
Thanks to Dawn Evans for the Pegasus title. { See her comments below }
Took this on Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Strange. It may be rain or snow but I dont know. Looks like a giant squid. I wonder did anyone else see it? Im sure someone will have an answer.
I removed two telegraph wires which were running across the bottom of the mountain but thats all. You can see slight traces of them left and right. I have several pics of it.

Seeing as I won't be going to far for the next few weeks I'll have to get creative or post some 'unseen' photos from before. This was in February 2020 from the mini hike over Keem beach, Achill during storm Dennis. No storm can last forever, every trouble will pass.
Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland
The fourth in the series of photos I took during my recent workshop on Achill Island. I composed and shot the photo but the workshop leader did the processing by way of demonstration of techniques for developing photos shot in RAW.
So there's always a story behind an image. I took this one Monday eve just gone. That's the beautiful Moyteoge Head on Achill Island. It also contains a lovely little beach called Keem. The beach is nice and remote but recently IG and magazine articles have been lauding it as one of the most beautiful beaches l in Ireland so it's attracting a lot of extra visitors, wild campers and the likes esp during the Summer months. It's also the location for Brendan Gleesons character in the new movie 'banshees of inisherin', so that's only going to draw more visitors!! I like it quiet and Winter is a good time to visit for me.
It was quite windy when we arrived but I wanted to get that aerial sunset pic. I though my little drone could handle the winds but alas. Thankfully the winds were blowing ashore but my little drone ended up in the mountain and landed itself when the battery had run out. I spend an hour up the mountain until it got dark and couldn't find it. There's no phone reception or data on this part of the island, at least not on the 3 network. My wife was about to call 999 when I came down off the mountain in the dark empty handed. She had called the one person we know on the island and he was just arriving all set to recover me! To make a long story short the last gps coordinated were incorrect due to the loss of data. I managed to get updated coordinated last night from the phone app and returned to the location at first light today and recovered the drone in about 10min. It sure helps when you have the right location. So all's well the ends well. I now know the limits of my drone and my wife :-)
Of yes, this is the photo I got just before it went missing!
Earlier today (Sunday) I took a short hike up to the old lookout above Keem Bay, Achill Island, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Storm Dennis was also going on today but it wasn’t too bad. Perched on a clifftop above the empty Atlantic on the edge of Europe, the weather here can change in moment’s notice. It wasn’t a day for exploring the cliffs.
During World War I, the British built an observation post to prevent the Germans from debarking arms for the Irish Republican Army.
The Irish Defence Forces rebuilt this post during World War II as a Look Out Post for the Coast Watching Service. It was in use until 1945. (www.mayo-ireland.ie/en/wild-atlantic-way/keem-strand.html)

I'm *kinda* back after dealing with some computer issues over the last week or so. Still figuring them out, but I was finally able to get it to work with me so I could get some photos done. Yay! Hopefully, I will have it all working properly ASAP.

Dooagh, Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland
Keem Bay really needs no introduction as it’s one of the most iconic beaches in Ireland. This old basking shark lookout post on the beach shore was recently used as ‘Colm Doherty’s house’ in the Irish movie ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’.
On arrival the entire Achill Island was blanketed in a thick low lying cloud inversion. I initially presumed there would be no photos captured that day. Within 5 minutes the misty clouds floated back up the surrounding hills, exposing this stunning beach for me to enjoy & admire.
Amongst all the undesirable weather, time and effort that goes with landscape photography, sometimes there are these little personal miracle moments that make up for all previous failed attempts 🙏
