The kayak (qajaq) was developed around 4000 years ago by the Inuit people as a stable, fast, sturdy, light and maneuverable small craft for hunting seals, walrus and waterfowl. They were originally made of an internal wooden rib structure covered with sealskin or cariboo hide. The long, narrow, low volume design remains the same but they are now made from composite materials.

Kayakers on Lake Ontario on their sunset journey to the Toronto Islands

Earlier in the day we drove the sound side around Surf City, NC looking for potential sunset locations. There was a short boardwalk in this area that looked promising, so we arrived early and set up. But then I saw some kayakers coming in and scrambled over to where they came ashore. They were really nice to let me use one of the kayaks for this shot.

Kayakers in Burrard Inlet.

Kayak fishing is my life , oh no , kayak fishing is my hobby . I am not privileged as such . I have got a passion . This year has been fantastic in every aspect . I set my goals as early as the first of January . Catching 25 species from the kayak in Scotland . This week we tackled the east . We teamed up well considering we are out to sea .

Species 25 came along nicely . Ding a ling as we say , the serpent looking cod . Half a mile out from the launch we have one thing in mind is to stay put on that kayak . The wind and tide are gathering pace , from time to time I check out on my friends Ian and Marcos .And they do the same with me .

This is multitasking , today’s fishing is not easy , the drift is fast .

The team is getting good , I feel safe out to sea .

I forgot to say , species 26 is now onboard too . A ( maossive ) scorpion fish . I did not know those fish could grow that size . We stay 6 good hours on the lumpy sea and say no to the last drift . We understand the risk and know our limits . This year has been so interesting in every aspect , we have learned so much as a team . No one knows where our next trip will be , that’s Scotland with the unpredictable weather . And we still have so much to learn , every day is a school day . Enjoy the images .

It’s late May and a group of kayakers paddle in Byron Bay, Australia, as the whale watching season begins. Soon the bay will be busy with whales as they rest on their long migration from colder Antarctic waters to warm northern bays to give birth. Then the whales will return with their new calves as they journey home, with eager tourists and locals watching them frolic.

Kayaking on the Ottawa River

With such a singular brilliant clarity

It could only be the reflection of Truth

That pure force with the power to dispel all fear

And open my heart to the simple essence of being

That chortles joyous laughter deep within the well of my chest

And strengthens me to paddle on along my route to discovery

The one only a kayaker can know.

There are so many back country streams and rivers in Florida that are easy to explore by kayak and canoe. This image is from the Hillsborough River that flows through Tampa County. Its an easy river to spend a quiet day on. There is no white water or much current so you have to do the paddle work but you will see a lot of birds like ibis and snake birds and even the occasional and non threatening alligator. You can fish along the way on on the bank. The put in here was at Lettuce Leaf Park. My best advise is to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and a good hat along with your snacks as it can get very warm and humid from March to October. Its a peaceful and green journey. If you don't have a kayak or canoe many Florida parks have them for rent at a reasonable price just google for prices and hours available. Enjoy the ride , kids love this too.
