Malla dynasty ruled Kathmandu Valley from 1201 to 1779. Although they claimed to have an Indian ancestry, Malla rulers were indigenous Newaris who are physically and linguistically related to Tibet and Southeast Asia. The dynasty broke up into three kingdoms in 1498, and Kathmandu became the capital of a Malla kingdom. Although Kathmandu later became the capital of Shah dynasty from Gorkha, it is still a Newari town.
Hanuman Dhoka Palace that used to be the palace for Malla kings is the centre of old Kathmandu. Indra Chowk is on the road leading to the palace complex. The architecture in the photo is Akash Bhairav Temple.
Motor bikes and cars have already replaced rickshaws on the streets of Kathmandu. Traffic jam and air pollution are sometimes serious.
Kathmandu is a fascinating mixture of old and new. In this picture, the sun sets behind Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple. The pollution and haze covering Kathmandu valley make for spectacular sunsets, but makes also breathing a health hazard.
