Another view of this fantastic castle. Some background information:
The medieval residence De Haar was founded in the course of the fourteenth century, on sediment deposits along a blind arm of the river Rhine. The first references to the castle date back to 1391. De Haar, however, is really special because - more than 100 years ago now - it was entirely restored and partially rebuilt, resulting in a restoration unparalleled in Europe. This involves not only the architecture, but also the interior and the gardens. Even the church and the village were involved in this project so that, without exaggeration, one could say it is a 'Gesamtkunstwerk' (integrated work of art): this is the creation of a unique, special, world in which all aspects of man's creative talents could flourish.

De Haar Castle and Gardens (Dutch: Kasteel de Haar),Haarzuilens, Utrecht, Netherlands
Some background information:
De Haar Castle is a neo-Gothic stately home near the village of Haarzuilens in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located less than 10 km (6 miles) northwest of the city of Utrecht and about 30 km (18 miles south of the Dutch capital city of Amsterdam.
De Haar Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1391. In that year the noble family De Haar received the castle and the surrounding lands as a fiefdom from Hendrik van Woerden, who was the overlord of the region. The castle remained in the ownership of the De Haar family until 1440, when the last male heir of the lineage died childless. The estate then passed to the noble family Van Zuylen.
In 1482, the castle was burned down and the walls were demolished, except for the parts that did not have a military function. These parts were probably incorporated into the castle when it was rebuilt during the early 16th century. The oldest image of De Haar Castle dates from 1554. It shows that the castle had been largely rebuilt by then.
In 1641, Johan van Zuylen van der Haar died childless. De Haar passed into the possession of the family’s Catholic branch in the southern Netherlands, Van Zuylen van Nievelt. However the castle subsequently fell into ruins as it wasn’t inhabited. At least it escaped total destruction by the French army during in the so called "rampjaar" (in English: "disaster year") 1672.
In 1887, the inheritor of the castle-ruins, Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nievelt, married Hélène de Rothschild, a member of the noble French-Jewish Rothschild family, which meant that he married into money. Fully financed by Hélène's family, the Rothschilds, the couple set about rebuilding the castle from its ruins. For the restoration of the castle, the famous architect Pierre Cuypers was hired. He was already well known for the construction and design of Amsterdam Central Station, the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam as well as more than 90 churches. Cuypers worked on this project for 20 years (from 1892 to 1912).
The 15th century walls were restored and integrated in the new design. In less than 20 years the impressive building arose, complete with towers, moats, a drawbridge and more than 150 rooms. The new stately home was built in neo-Gothic style which was very popular in the 19th century – inspired by the Middle Ages but with modern luxuries. A central heating system, a lift, a modern kitchen, hot and cold running water in most rooms and electrical lighting provided all the luxury the baron and his guests needed during their stays. In the kitchen the great collection of copper pans and saucepans is well worth seeing, which is reputed to be the second largest in the world. Only the British royal family is said to have a larger one.
But the most remarkable aspect is that the castle was restored and rebuilt in a way unseen in Europe. The vision of Cuypers and Baron Etienne didn’t stop with the building itself but also included the interior design of the building, the surrounding gardens, the chapel and even the village of Haarzuilens. So the architect and the baron transformed the whole estate into a Neo-Gothic complete artwork, which was absolutely unique in the whole world.
The gardens directly surrounding the castle were designed in the French Geometric style by Hendrik Copijn, like the gardens of Versailles. However the rest of the 135-acre park was designed in the English Country Style with winding paths, fine vistas of the castle in the distance, bridges and beautiful, impressive trees.
In the seventies Etienne and Helene’s grandson Baron Thierry van Zuylen van Nievelt implemented an annual event, which already has become a tradition and is still carried on: Every September the baron invites world-famous celebrities to De Haar Castle to stay and celebrate with him for a couple of days. Well, due to the family’s name and the impressive location most celebrities accept the baron’s invitation. Brigitte Bardot used to explore the interior by moped, while Roger Moore began carving a turkey by impaling it as a whole and asking the question “Does anybody else really want a piece of this delicious bird?” Also on the spot were Maria Callas, Joan Collins, Gregory Peck, Yves Saint Laurent and the famous Dutch football player Marco Van Basten, to name just a few.
Today De Haar Castle can be visited on guided tours while visitors can explore the gardens on their own. If you should plan to travel to the Netherlands, I highly recommend a trip to Haarzuilens in the province of Utrecht.
