From Wikipedia:

In 437 BC, the ancient Greek city of Amphipolis was founded near the river's entrance to the Aegean, at the site previously known as Ennea Hodoi ('Nine roads'). When Xerxes I of Persia crossed the river during his invasion in 480 BC he buried alive nine young boys and nine maidens as a sacrifice to the river god. The forces of Alexander I of Macedon defeated the remnants of Xerxes' army near Ennea Hodoi in 479 BC. In 424 BC the Spartan general Brasidas after crossing the entire Greek peninsula sieged and conquered Amphipolis. According to the ancient sources, the river was navigable from its mouth up to the ancient (and today dried) Cercinitis lake, which also favored the navigation; and thus was formed in antiquity an important waterway that served the communication between the coasts of Strymonian Gulf and the Thracian hinterland and almost to the city of Serres.

About Strimonas river:

About Amphipolis:

Amphipolis, an Athenian colony, was the seat of the battle between the Spartans and Athenians in 422 BC, and also the place where Alexander the Great prepared for campaigns leading to his invasion of Asia. Alexander's three finest admirals, Nearchus, Androsthenes and Laomedon, resided in Amphipolis, which is also the place where, after Alexander's death, his wife Roxana and their son Alexander IV were exiled and later murdered.

Excavations in and around the city have revealed important buildings, ancient walls and tombs. The finds are displayed at the archaeological museum of Amphipolis. At the nearby vast Kasta burial mound, an ancient Macedonian tomb has recently been revealed. The Lion of Amphipolis monument nearby is a popular destination for visitors.

About Hill 133:

More likely this is the hill that Thucydides talks about, where Cleon and the Athenian army (philosopher Socrates included) made a camp, north east of Amphipolis wall guarded by Brasidas along with his Spartans and Peloponnesian allies. It was the battle of Amphipolis (422 BC).

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Amphipolis

The Athenians tried to recapture the strategically located city from the Spartans that took control of Amphipolis in the winter of 424-423 BC. It is worth noticing that Thucydides, who was an Athenian strategos (general), was in the island of Thasos having some Athenian triremes under his command but when he reached the Strymon delta it was too late as Spartans had already captured the city. For his failure to contribute in Amphipolis defense Thucydides was exiled and wrote about the events of the Peloponnesian War.

During the first World War the area was part of the Macedonian Front.

Until 1930s the left part of the picture was lake and swamps.

Thucydides 5th book chapter 7

"Cleon for a while lay still, but was afterwards forced to do as was expected by Brasidas. [2] For the soldiers being angry with their stay there, and recounting with themselves what a command his would be, and with what ignorance and cowardice against what skill and boldness of the other, and how they came forth with him against their wills, he perceived their muttering, and being unwilling to offend them with so long a stay in one place, dislodged and led them forward. [3] And he took the same course there, which having succeeded well before at Pylus gave him cause to think himself to have some judgment. For he thought not that any body would come forth to give him battle, and gave out he went up principally to see the place, and stayed for greater forces, not to secure him in case he should be compelled to fight, but that he might therewith environ the city on all sides at once, and in that manner take it by force. [4] So he went up and set his army down on a strong hill before Amphipolis, standing himself to view the fens of the river Strymon and the situation of the city towards Thrace; [5] and thought he could have retired again at his pleasure, without battle. For neither did any man appear upon the walls nor come out of the gates, which were all fast shut. Insomuch as he thought he had committed an error in coming without engines, because he thought he might by such means have won the city, as being without defendants."

About Pangaion mount:

Mount Pangaion, also spelled Pangeon, Pangaeum, Pangaeos, or Pangaios, Modern Greek Pangaíon Óros, mountain, at the mouth of the Struma (Modern Greek: Strymónas) River, northeastern Kaválla nomós (department), Macedonia (Makedonía), Greece. Its highest point is 6,417 feet (1,956 m). The upper slopes are formed by fracturing of marble rock; gold and silver mineral deposits are found at lower elevations. It is rich in forest and streams and is surrounded by the fertile alluvial plain of the Struma, on which crops such as tobacco, cotton, rice, and olives are cultivated intensively. In ancient times, the peak was the home of a cult of Dionysus. The ancient Thracians exploited its gold and silver, trading their metals for goods supplied by the Amphipolitans and Neapolitans. Its famed wealth led to constant strife in the region, however, until Philip II of Macedonia gained control in the 4th century BCE. Situated on the east side of the mountain are the monastery of Eikosiphoiníssis, containing some ancient manuscripts, and the church of Zoodochos Pighi, founded in the 6th century CE. The usual base for the ascent of Mount Pangaion is either of the towns of Elevtheroupolis or Pravion.

Here comes my contribution to fotosöndag's weekly challenge - paraphernalia.

I seem to have collected quite a bit of camera knick-knacks over the last three years with just some of my stuff that I use in this picture (along with my first camera and two lenses that were given to me).

Thanks once again to my wife in helping throw, drop and catch different items for this picture!

Saint Knut's Day Swedish: tjugondag jul, lit. 'twentieth-day Christmas'; tjugondag Knut, lit. 'twentieth-day Knut'; or knutmasso; Finnish: nuutinpäivä, lit. 'Knut's Day'), or the Feast of Saint Knut, is a traditional festival celebrated in Sweden and Finland on 13 January. It is not celebrated on this date in Denmark (the Knut day was moved in Sweden, not in Denmark) despite being named for the Danish prince Canute Lavard, and later also associated with his uncle, Canute the Saint, the patron saint of Denmark. Christmas trees are taken down on tjugondag jul, and the candies and cookies that decorated the tree are eaten. In Sweden, the feast held during this event is called a Knut's party (julgransplundring, literally 'Christmas tree plundering').

We come from the sea,

we come from bays and straits, from tobacco and coffee,

from yellow painted houses under skies that soon will be overcast.

We come from boats that starts hammering if one pull the engines to start.

We come from the effort and toil,

from winter and darkness, from farmers and fishermen.

We come from morning dawn,

days being lost and found, nights bathed in Norwegian summer light.

We came from the sea, and we steered towards the shore.

We steered towards the outdoor light that threw a home-like glow over the front door.

We went inside, we went to sleep.

Then we got up, ate breakfast,

started the car engines, drove the southbound roads, the westbound, the eastbound,

drove throughout the day,

lit the lights at night, found the roads to the towns.

Steered towards everything ahead.

We came from the sea, but turned into something else,

we changed so fast that we didn't see it ourselves.

~ Frode Grytten, in "Tatt av Norge" (Captured by the Norwegians) ~

Grandpa was born in 1913 and he got to experience two world wars it a he remembers not the second, he remembered very well and called up during that time. So my memory how I like small sat leafing through these books because I have always thought that the story is interesting. Have tried to read them, but the text is so small so you have a magnifying glass .So when he went away so they would be thrown luckily got them saved.

CASTE SYSTEM: It is another brick in the wall of discrimination based on the colour of the skin. The word caste originates from the Portuguese language. Such odd occurrence is because Portuguese sailors who visited India used the word caste to describe the “Varna” or labour separation based on the colour of the skin. The invading Aryans established the caste system in India. They used their genesis lore in the Vedas to outline and legitimize the caste system. According to the Vedas, a giant called Purusha was the original being from where all humans came about. From his head sprang the fair-skinned Brahmans or Hindu Priest – who think and speak Sanskrit. From his mighty and strong arms came the Kings and warriors. Business people and farmers originated in his stomach and tights. Moreover, from his feet came the darkest skinned people – original inhabitants of India or Dravidians – to do menial work. Thus, the darker the colour, the lower the position a person has in the caste system. Then, Aryans and British colonialists used a code called “Laws of Manu” to regulate all possible exchanges and roles among castes. The outcaste or pariahs are those who infringed the code or whose caste origin – usually mixed marriages -could no fit into the system or subject to rejection. As one is born into a family belonging to a specific caste and job, it is not possible to escape such fate but by turning to another religion. Many Hindu Indians converted into Buddhism or Islam in the past to escape their caste fate. During Independence, Caste abolition was a prominent concern for the father of the Indian nation: Mahatma Gandhi. The current Indian Constitution prohibited caste. However, it still prevails in Indian society to a sometimes alarming extent.

Karl Emil Schaefer (1891-1917) was a German air ace with 30 victories and the winner of the Pour le Merite. Like so many pilots, Schaefer started in the infantry and transferred to aviation after being wounded. Schaefer shot down his first airplane while with Kasta 11. Richtofen sought him out when he was gathering his first group of pilots, and Schaefer was posted to Jasta 11 on February 21, 1917. In three months, Schaefer had shot down 29 more planes, won the Pour le Merite and was named the commander of Jasta 28. On June 15, 1917, Schaefer fell to the guns of a British two-seater himself. This is a view of Schaefer's crash.

I've to run as fast as I can to get this shot because I was quite far away when this cow cart passing by.

Laocoon, the son of Acoetes, is a figure in Greek and Roman mythology and the Epic Cycle. He was a Trojan priest who warned the Trojans not to let the Greeks' wooden horse into the city and was about to throw his spear into the horse's belly to expose the Greeks hidden therein. He was then attacked, with his two sons, by giant serpents sent by the gods, which made the Trojans believe that he was wrong. The story of Laocoon has been the subject of numerous artists, both in ancient and in more contemporary times.

Persamaan Kak Wari Dan Jokowi

Unused postcard showing a so-called "Groß-Kampfflugzeug". I was hoping for it to be a "Riesenflugzeug" or gaint airplane, but I'll settle for just large (half the size of the giant ones).

During the Great war, manufacturers Friedrichshaven, Gotha and AEG were involved in making a series of heavy biplane bombers. I wasn't exactly sure, but Varese2002 identified the plane on scene as a Friedrichshaven GIII.a and not a Gotha G. Va as we assumed earlier. An elaborate analysis of the differences can be found when scrolling down through the comments.

About 340 specimens were made starting in 1917. The G.IIIa had a 3 man crew, an operational range of 600 km and an impressive wingspan of about 24 m.

Note the absence of "lozenge" camouflage, which can be explained because beginning in late 1917 the Friedrichshafen G.III / G.IIIa started night operations to Dunkirk and Paris. Adding camouflage was useless and would only add to the costs and spillage of precious materials to be used elsewhere.

By 1917, the German Airfroce (Luftstreitkräfte) were able to field a sufficient number of such large bombers, able of performing long range operations carrying several 100 kgs of bombs each. Many were attached to Kagohl 3 (Kampfgeschwader der Obersten Heeresleitung) 3, grouping 6 'Kasta' or 'Kampfstaffeln. These would later be renamed to 'Bosta' in a 'Bogohl' for 'Bombenstaffeln' and 'Bombengeschwader', more appropriate for their activities. This unit was in fact also know as the "England Geschwader", performing many raids and strategic bombing missions over England and even London, this from the Aerodrome in Sint-Denijs-Westrem and Gontrode in the Ghent area, Belgium.

In these missions, they flew alongside Rfa501 - Riesenflugzeugabteilung 501. Read more about this unit and their actions by following the picture in comment.

The last attack on England in 1918 was the biggest, involving 38 Gotha bombers, but 7 were lost.

Persamaan Kak Wari Dan Jokowi

An interesting portrait of a German gentlemen posing with a dog. The insignia on his shoulder straps denote that this is a type of Aviation or Flieger unit (wings crossed with a propeller).

The insignia on the sleeve indicates that he was a member of Kampfstaffel 6 (Kasta 6) of Kampfgeschwader I Obersten Heeres Leitung (Kagohl 1). A pilots badge is absent from his tunic, or possibly obscured by this arm. He was certainly part of a bomber crew. Also note the puttees and the Guard-litzen.

Kagohl 1 originated from Brieftauben-Abteilung Ostende (B. A. O.), this change took place on 20.12.1915. The Red Baron, Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, was also part of B.A.O.

B.A.O. itself was formed from Flieger-Ersatz-Abteilung 1 (FEA 1) on 27.11.1914.

After 1917, some reorganizations took place. Kasta 1-3 of Kagohl 1 became Bombenstaffel 1-3 of of Bombengeschwader I OHL (Bogohl 1).

Kasta 4-6 were however transferred to other sections. Kasta 6 was changed into Kasta 15 of Kagohl 3 on 03.04.1917. On 27.03.1918 this became Schutzstaffel 3 (Schusta 3) or Schlachtstaffel 3. It is possible that this person served untill the end of the war in Schlasta 3.

Some battle history of Kagohl 1 (at each of these dates, a member died):

26 February 1916: Driene sur Meuse

12 March 1916: Dombasle

18 March 1916: Verdun

20-22 May 1916, attacks on the harbour of Dunkirk, no less then 100.000 kg of bombs would be dropped by over 40 airplanes.

June 1916, Kasta’s 1, 4 and 6 went to German 2nd Army front at the Somme, where fighting was fierce, while Kasta’s 2, 3 and 5 went to Romania and later continued to the Macedonian front.

19 June 1916: Neuburg

15 July 1916: Essigny le Petit

21 July 1916: Douai

It was not easy to trace the history of this unit, I used this excellent website, but some dates seemed to contradict each other:
