For thousands of years, fishermen have used trained cormorants to fish the rivers and lakes of China. To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat. This prevents the birds from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat, but the birds can swallow smaller fish. When a cormorant catches a fish, the fisherman then brings the bird back to the boat and has it spit the fish up onto the bamboo deck.

Cormorant fishing has been practiced in China and Japan since around 960 AD, although these days it is largely used as a tourist attraction.

Located within the boundaries of Baisha Town, Yangshuo County, Fuli Bridge was built over 500 years ago in the Ming Dynasty. The bridge measures 30 meters in length, 10 meters in height and 5 meters in width.

Single-arched stone bridges were a common type of bridge built in ancient China due to their strength and sturdiness, and like many of them, the Fuli Bridge has survived thanks to its high resistance to weathering.

There is a long climb to the top of Ti Top Island in Ha Long Bay where you can get a great view of the surrounding bay and islands with the myriad cruise ships that visit this popular spot. It was named by President Ho Chi Minh after the Russian astronaut German Titop when he visited Ha Long Bay in 1962.

At over 500 years old, the Fuli Bridge is yet another ancient stone bridge which can be found in the countryside around Yangshuo. When seen from a distance away, the bridge with its high arched back and the reflection created in the water form a perfect circle, called a full moon by the locals.

Ganz unvermittelt sieht man ausgespülte Becken in ebenen Felsplatten.

Chinese fishermen have long used trained cormorants to catch fish from the region's rivers. These birds are trained to catch and spit out fish. Here, you can see how the cormorants perch with their wings open to dry their feathers in the sun. Unlike ducks, cormorants’ feathers are not very waterproof. While the water-resistant feathers protect other birds' bodies from getting soaked, the oily coating isn’t great for diving. Cormorants’ feathers instead get waterlogged, allowing the bird to sink and dive more efficiently.

The Cat Ba Islands in northern Vietnam, consist of a large limestone island with a maximum height of 322 m above sea level and 366 small limestone islets with a total area of about 180 km2. The islands are relicts of karst limestone mountains that became submerged during the Holocene transgression 7000 - 8000 year ago. The ecosystems on the Cat Ba Islands that support very high species biodiversity include tropical evergreen rainforests, soft bottoms; coral reefs, mangrove forests, and marine karst lakes. A total of 2,380 species have been recorded in the Cat Ba Islands, included 741 species of terrestrial plants; 282 species of terrestrial animals; 30 species of mangrove plants; 287 species of phytoplankton; 79 species of seaweed; 79 species of zooplankton; 196 species of marine fishes; 154 species of corals; and 538 species of zoobenthos. Many of these species are listed in the Red Book of Vietnam as endangered species, included the white-headed or Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus), a famous endemic species. Human activities have resulted in significantly changes to the landscape end ecosytems of the Cat Ba islands; however, many natural aspects of the islandsd have been preserved. For this reason, the Cat Ba Islands were recognized as a Biological Reserved Area by UNESCO in 2004.

For thousands of years, Li River fishermen have lived by the water, fishing raft and riverboat songs are so familiar to Guilin people; that constitutes the Li River scenery as a solid landscape painting. Cormorant fishing was a traditional way of life for Li River fishermen in the past. Nowadays, most of the Li River is not allowed to go fishing to renew Lijiang's sustainable development; fewer fishermen live on fishing. Cormorant fishing is primarily utilized as a tourist attraction and subject for photography, though arrangements must be made for viewing this distinctive fishing method.
