Just before the sun sets on the bay, we climbed into the caves that lead to this vista. The karst formations rose like castles out of the still water.

Hạ Long Bay, in northeast Vietnam, is known for its emerald waters and thousands of towering limestone karsts, that rise up in the water, topped by rainforests.

Somewhat disappointingly, our one night cruise was more focussed on eating and activities rather than the stunning and iconic scenery that we had come to see.

View from the summit at tiger cave temple located about 3km from Krabi town. The main tourist attraction in the temple complex is the 1,272 step climb up a limestone tower to see the "footprint of the Buddha".

Even if you are in good shape, the heat and humidity make this a difficult hike. Once you make it to the top, you are rewarded with stunning 360? views of the surrounding countryside and the Andaman Sea.

The world’s most dramatic karsts can be found in China and Vietnam. They’re basically limestone formations that are weathered by water. One of the most famous karsts in Thailand is the James Bond Rock (Ko Tapu), a backdrop used in the filming of “Man with the Golden Gun.” I got a photo of this mushroom shaped karst while touring through the islands not far from Krabi.

Wulingyuan Park, located in the Hunan Province of China, has a diverse landscape that changes with each season. The only constant is the fog that surrounds the quartz sandstone karst pillars. I spent about 4 hours in the park and was fortunate to occasionally see the fog lift so that I could capture these amazing natural formations.

As I drove home yesterday afternoon, I noticed a lot of high Cirrus Cloud and I thought, hmm this could potentially be a nice sunset this evening. So I got my gear and headed up Holmepark Fell.

The light over Morecambe Bay was really good as I made the climb up the Limestone Plateau. Scouting round I found some nice spots and set about trying to get some decent images as the light got better and better.

I had a couple of messages from fellow Flickr member John Bleakley who happened to be down in Morecambe and we were treated to a great light show after sunset too. More of those later.

I've mentioned "karst" in my previous photo and I'd like to visualize it with this photo.

I was talking about the "Gottesacker", a Karst landscape on the Hoher Ifen. Imagine the cracked rock face in this photo as a huge area with even deeper cracks and crevasses, lying under your feet. That is a Karst landscape. It took millions of years for rain and streams to dissolve part of the limestone (like the one we see here).

This photo was taken from the same spot as the previous one.

Misty giants dotting the landscape, these limestone karsts are a familiar sight in Southern Thailand.

This photomanipulation is made from a photograph of a drawing I did as a study in preparation for a painting.

Karst is a type of porous limestone; it is sort of like a rock sponge where the softer parts have erroded away, through which the springs of my area flow.

Lunch over and the boats on this beach have just left. Time to take unobstructed photos of this beach on Shimizu Island, Bacuit Bay, El Nido, Philippines. The shadows are of the imposing karst formations on the island. Karst topography is a common feature of El Nido town, the islands in Bacuit Bay and further up north in the Linapacan islands and the Calamian Islands.

Go here for a story on Shimizu Island and other El Nido destinations.

A lake in southern Thailand surrounded by the limestone karsts so typical of this landscape. Photographed near Ao Nang, Krabi, Thailand.

After a long day and a family funeral, I just needed some fresh air and a walk. So an hour before sunset I had a mooch around the summit of Holmepark Fell. It was cool and windy and the perfect tonic to clear the head!

I took several shots around the incoming showers and as I was about to pack up I spotted this strange rock formation in the Limestone pavement. It looked like a plughole with eccentric shapes. So even though the light was pretty much gone I tried to frame up a shot with the camera set very low on the splayed tripod.

Between Prvačina and Štanjel, the Karst Railway climbs almost 250 metres in altitude and thus ascends the Karst plateau. Therefore, the railway line runs almost entirely along the mountain flank or in tunnels in this section. At Branik, a side valley is overcome by means of a small viaduct. 813 131 and 127 roll as R4216(Sežana - Nova Gorica) downhill over this valley.

Unfortunately, these two 813s are also graffitied.

Krabi is noteworthy for this particular type of limestone landscape. The odd mini mountain left behind really fascinated me.

Travelling up the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, in Laos, this is a view of its sandy banks and an imposing limestone karst.

Hilantagaan Island is another island located off the eastern coast of Bantayan Island. It's not as popular as the other attractions in the area but two white sand beaches, karst formations, a white sandbar and coral reef at its southern end make it a favorable destination. There are also two small fishing villages located in the area where boatmen offer their vessels for island-hopping tours at very reasonable rates.
