My encounters with birds have generally been fleeting moments. However, this Kalij pheasant seemed as interested in me as I was in capturing our close encounter.

Males are rather variable depending on the subspecies involved, but all have an at least partially glossy bluish-black plumage, while females are overall brownish. The kalij pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) is a pheasant found in forests and thickets, especially in the Himalayan foothills, from Pakistan to western Thailand. However, these pheasant were spotted very far from there. During a trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, I spotted this pair walking through the underbrush. I was stunned to see they continued walking toward me...so I froze like the proverbial deer in the headlights. What a treat!
Lophura leucomelanos
another introduced species to Hawaii, orginally from the Himalayan foothills, from Pakistan to western Thailand
This is a bird mostly found in the Himalayan regions and introduced to Hawaii. We saw it close to sunset as it crossed the path ahead of us. A guide who was with a tour group just behind us was mentioning how the pheasant had got injured in the leg and was now recovering. We were lucky to spot one in the wild, as you can see it is nicely camouflaged in the grass.
This beautiful pheasant came into a blind at Ban Song Nok. He kept fighting with a Red junglefowl cock.
This image of a female Kalij Pheasant (left) and male (right) illustrates the contrasting plumage of the two. These birds allowed us great looks thanks to our vantage point in a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, Thailand. The male’s formidable spurs are visible on the red legs.
The Kalij Pheasant can be found in a variety of habitat types such as evergreen and deciduous forests with dense undergrowth in valleys, or thickets, secondary vegetation and abandoned cultivated areas.
This species can be found from 25 metres in NE Bangladesh, up to 3700 metres in Nepal.
Males are rather variable depending on the subspecies involved, but all have an at least partially glossy bluish-black plumage, while females are overall brownish. Both sexes have a bare red face and greyish legs (the latter separating it from the red-legged silver pheasant),

With 2019 closing down and few days ( Holidays) left let us enjoy each day of the year and look forward to the next !!
Always wanted to have a close up of this bird to showcase its true colours and this time was lucky to be able to do that

There is a lot of variation over the wide range of Kalij Pheasant. I was intrigued by the different colours of the legs on these two males of the same population: red on the bird on the left, and white on the right. (One online source suggests that the two colours occur in different species, however photos of Kalij Pheasant on eBird show individuals with both leg colours.) The individual on the right shows the vertically compressed tail of the males of this species. These birds were observed at a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, Thailand.

The kalij pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) is a pheasant found in forests and thickets, especially in the Himalayan foothills, from Pakistan to western Thailand. Males are rather variable depending on the subspecies involved, but all have an at least partially glossy bluish-black plumage, while females are overall brownish. Both sexes have a bare red face and greyish legs (the latter separating it from the red-legged silver pheasant). It is generally common and widespread, though three of its eastern subspecies (L. l. oatesi, L. l. lineata, and L. l. crawfurdi) are considered threatened and L. l. moffitti is virtually unknown in the wild.
The name is also spelled kaleege in old texts, such as Game Birds of India and Asia by Frank Finn, though no longer in his Indian Sporting Birds. The species was introduced to Hawaii in 1962 as a gamebird.
The kalij pheasant is closely related to the silver pheasant, and the two are known to hybridize.
This Kalij Pheasant male shows its dazzling plumage, topped off with bare red skin on the face and a jaunty black crest. This is a normally shy species, but we got excellent views at a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park. That renowned protected area is in Phetchaburi province, Thailand.
Kalij Pheasant is a striking species with a wide range, extending from the Himalayas southeast to Thailand. There is much variation across this distribution, as well as intergrades with the related Silver Pheasant (L. nycthemera). This photo shows a female with mainly brown plumage, which affords camouflage while nesting. The setting was a hide (blind) near Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, Thailand.
Kalij Pheasant (Lophura leucomelanos) males underparts and crest are glossy blue-black, but the tail and upperparts are white with most feathers densely vermiculated with black. Females are brownish. In some subspecies, the underparts are distinctly marked in whitish and black, while in others, most feathers are pale-edged, resulting in a scaly appearance.

Also this place is not just about birding, it has other activities like camping, boating, fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking and hiking.
So far as birding is concerned, it has three different areas to explore - studio, hide and trail.
Through my various posts, i will try to explain all the three aspects of birding. I will post the butterflies and mosses as well which I clicked during the hike within forest.
Set amongst the dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is among the very few of the unspoiled biodiversity in northern India.
Sattal is unique for having 500 species of resident and migratory birds, 20 species of mammals, over 525 species of butterflies and over 11,000 species of moths, beetles, bugs and other insects.
There are some small hotels and resorts catering to tourists looking mainly for birding and enjoying the nature walk.
