The Tit Hylia (Pholidornis rushiae) is one of West Africa’s smallest forest birds, It is also the smallest bird native to Africa! a delicate and easily overlooked presence high in the canopy. Cloaked in soft green tones that mirror surrounding leaves, it moves quietly through fine branches, often betraying its presence only with a thin, high-pitched call. Tiny yet energetic, it forages methodically for insects along twigs and foliage, rewarding patient observation rather than quick glances.

Strongly associated with mature forest, the Tit Hylia favours dense woodland where its subtle plumage provides near-perfect camouflage. Its unobtrusive behaviour and preference for shaded, leafy habitats make sightings brief but memorable, especially for those willing to pause and watch carefully.

This photograph was taken from the canopy walkway in Kakum National Park, Ghana — one of the highest and most exhilarating canopy walks in Africa. Suspended high above the forest floor, the walkway offers a rare perspective into the upper levels of the rainforest, where birds like the Tit Hylia spend much of their lives. Photographing such a small, active species from such a high canopy added an extra layer of challenge, making the encounter all the more rewarding.

A Malachite Kingfisher near Kakum National Park, Ghana, West Africa. This is a small kingfisher, 13 cm (5.1 in) in length. The general colour of the upper parts of the adult bird is bright metallic blue. The head has a short crest of black and blue feathers, which gives rise to the scientific name. The face, cheeks, and underparts are rufous and white patches are on the throat and rear neck sides.

Small, slim, forest cuckoo. Male is a gorgeous emerald green with yellow on the belly. Female is much duller and heavily barred, with hints of green on the rufous back. Found in moist forest, from sea level up to fairly high elevations. Inconspicuous canopy-dwelling species that is usually located by call, a distinctive “pre-ty, geor-gio”. Separated from other small green cuckoos by its lack of a white eyebrow or throat.

Kakum National Park, located in the coastal environs of the Central Region of Ghana, covers an area of 375 square kilometres (145 sq mi). Established in 1931 as a reserve, it was gazetted as a national park only in 1992.

It is one of only 2 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway, which is 350 metres (1,150 ft) long and connects seven tree tops which provides access to the forest.

From the lowest to the highest species, one encounters herbaceous plants, shrubs (about 4 m), and trees; the latter form a dense canopy of foliage at a height of 20 to 40 m, surpassed only by a few ancient trunks of exceptional height (up to 70 m).

How did I find this beauty? Well what do you do when you realise how much you didn’t appreciate birds in a place you used to live… you go back! I did some bird photography back when I was in Accra but I spent my lunchtime capturing a few bird photos. During my recent visit to Ghana, I decided it was time to go where the birds are. I spotted this African Emerald Cuckoo in the famous Kakum National park on one of my visits. I identified and photographed 70 lifers on a trip where I was able to visit only 2 so called hotspots, coming back with over 18k images on my memory card which I’m dreading having to sort and cull. Send me a flickr mail if you’d like to tag along sometime.

FACTS

The African Emerald Cuckoo is frequently regarded as "a gem" among avian species. Like its counterparts, this cuckoo captures the interest of bird watchers with its striking green plumage and unique call. It plays an essential role in the ecosystems it occupies and presents intriguing challenges and opportunities for those working in conservation. This bird is primarily located throughout sub-Saharan Africa, extending from West Africa to East Africa, with sightings noted as far south as Angola and Zambia. It flourishes in various forest environments, including lowland rainforests, montane forests, and woodlands.

Additionally, the African Emerald Cuckoo holds significant cultural importance in many African traditions. Its vivid colors and elusive behavior have inspired various myths and stories, often symbolizing renewal and good luck. The bird’s presence is frequently viewed as a sign of favorable times, with some beliefs linking its call to the start of the rainy season, indicating a time of agricultural prosperity. These cultural ties underscore the profound relationship between local communities and the natural environment.

Their diet mainly includes caterpillars, beetles, and various insects. They possess a unique ability to eat hairy or toxic caterpillars that are often avoided by other birds, providing them with a competitive advantage in their ecological niche. Additionally, they occasionally consume fruits and berries, which helps diversify their diet with plant-based materials.

Kakum National Park was established in 1932 as a protected natural area not open to the public (it was, however, exploited for timber harvesting).

In 1994, the government decided to open the park to the public, and a visitor center was established in 1997.

It's amazing how easily this brilliantly coloured African Emerald Cuckoo can disappear in the foliage. Luckily, this one chose a tree with dead leaves.
