Last night, I was lucky enough to see Femi Kuti play again in Chicago after 6 years! I also felt blessed to be surrounded by a really excited crowd of Nigerians there to support him who really amplified the energy!. Fun times!

Femi Kuti is a legend and I love the sense of his progressive politics and the way he spoke about controlling the storm and also a bit about the storm inside each of every one of us. He also spoke about the "silence" and appreciating what you have, about the importance of good electricity and health care and about the suffering in the world and corruption of governments. And yet, he still made time for dancing. What an incredible human!

Seun is the son of Fela Kuti, carrying on his father's legacy. I was lucky enough to see him play at Pritzker Pavillion in Millennium Park on Monday night before having to bike home in furious winds during a tornado warning (a little terrifying!)

luseun Anikulapo Kuti is a Nigerian singer, saxophonist, and bandleader who carries on the Afrobeat legacy of his father, Fela Kuti. Seun leads Egypt 80, his father's former band, and has recorded four albums with them. He's known for his socially conscious music and captivating performances. Seun's father was a vocal critic of Nigerian military rule and corruption, and used his music to address social injustice and human rights abuses

Kuti's restaurant is housed in the Grade II listed Royal Pier Gatehouse.

I meant to upload this one earlier today but I couldn't find where I packed my card reader from vacation (I know, I know...so lame!) Anyway, I felt blessed and lucky to see the amazing Femi Kuti last night at Prtizker Pavillion in Millennium Park, Chicago and it was incredibly enjoyable and a harmonious engaging experience. I love Kuti's sense of both politics and peacefulness.

Kuti Kuti (Malay word for flipping action) is a yesteryear children’s game in which two opposing players take turns to flip colourful plastic tokens on top of each other. The winner is defined as the one with his token on top of the opponent's token. S/He then gets to keep the token!

August-2014.

The son of the legendary Fela Kuti, creator of Afrobeat, Femi Kuti shows up in Montreal with his amazing band. A nice addition to my Afrobeat collection (Brooklyn-based Antibalas are another Afrobeat band here in my photostream)

we took several shots for a series for ariztos magazine.

Big thanks to Shutter Photo Magazine and D. Travis North for the article on my photo, Swag, and for awarding Back From The Future one of their 10 most interesting photos of 2010!

As for this image:

A boy tries to catch raindrops in an empty bottle. Taken in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico; not a composite.

I've been thinking about the notion of sharing photography artistically as being a lot like initiating a conversation. We "say" something, hoping to spark a thought or emotion, to ask a question, to convince others of an idea, or at least to invoke some sort of raw response - hopefully in a constructive, progressive fashion. With that thought in mind, the idea of catching and sharing an authentic, fleeting candid moment like this is the reason why I have largely given up pursuing composite imagery.

I'm not talking about whether it's right to edit your images beyond whatever the camera captured. I'm not referring to work that is clearly conceptual or abstract in nature, nor am I knocking surrealism as a genre; in fact, I love to (try to) shoot concepts as well as study the complexity of dreamy, artfully conceived images. I also understand that properly executing a surrealistic concept requires substantial artistic intelligence, and is WAY easier said than done.

Still, and I could be wrong of course, it seems to me that trying to convincingly capture and present both surrealist composites and slices of life, without sufficient context, would cause the viewer to question the moments I had hoped to articulate as the real thing - to possibly cause the audience to even question the nature or motive of the conversation.

On the other hand, in some cases I suppose that "misdirection" could be an artist/photographers' intention. Perhaps the key word here is context. Hmmm... I do indeed have a lot to learn...

I'm sure I will revisit and challenge that thought at some point, because, you know... I must. This is just the way I feel about it today, and I was in the mood to write. :)

Anyway, title inspired by Fela Kuti's "Water No Get Enemy".
