Cherry blossoms, known as sakura, symbolize the fleeting nature of life. They are stunning in full bloom but only last a few weeks before falling and withering away. This duality represents both life and death, beauty and violence. As spring brings new life, the blooming sakura exudes vitality, yet their short lifespan reminds us of life's transience.

Sakura is a prominent symbol in Japanese culture, appearing in art, film, poetry, and literature. Historically, they represented the brief, colorful lives of samurai, who lived by a strict moral code called bushido. Fallen cherry blossoms symbolized the end of a samurai's life.

During World War II, kamikaze pilots adorned their planes with sakura, symbolizing a beautiful, honorable death for the emperor. In Japanese folk religions, cherry blossom trees were associated with agricultural fertility, believed to be the dwelling places of deities who transformed into rice paddy gods.

The Hanami ritual celebrates the transient beauty of cherry blossoms. Known as "flower viewing," it involves gazing at the flowers, a practice that dates back to ancient times when farmers prayed and made offerings under the trees for a bountiful harvest. Today, Hanami is a beloved annual event where families and friends gather for picnics and parties under the cherry blossoms, enjoying food, drinks, and each other's company.

The Red Fort, also known as Lal Qila, is an historic Mughal fort located in the Old Delhi area of Delhi, India. It served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan on the 12th of May 1639, the fort was constructed following his decision to shift the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi. Originally adorned in red and white, the fort's design is attributed to Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the architect of the Taj Mahal. The Red Fort is a prominent example of Mughal architecture from Shah Jahan's reign, combining Persian and Indian architectural styles.

During the invasion by Nadir Shah of the Afsharid Empire in 1739, the fort was plundered and stripped of its artwork and jewels. Following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, many of its marble structures were demolished by the British, although the defensive walls remained largely intact. The fort was later repurposed as a military garrison.

On 15 August 1947, the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, hoisted the Indian flag above the Lahori Gate, the main entrance of the Red Fort. Since then, the Prime Minister of India has ceremonially raised the national tricolour at the main gate each year on Independence Day, then delivering a nationally broadcast address from its ramparts.

The Red Fort, as part of the Red Fort Complex, was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Rhingia rostrata (known in some places as the Grey-backed Snout) is one of a pair of at first glance roughly similar Hoverflies.

In Northumberland ever since I’ve paid attention to these we see the darker bodied Rhingia campestris across the county.

Rhingia rostrata was found for the first time in 2021 in Bothal near Morpeth. I was with the finder who announced this was the site where he found it last year and it would be good to see another.

I looked at the plants right in front of us and said how about this one then. You couldn’t make it up!!

There are subtle differences, the more orangey coloured abdomen being one but variation means that is not a wholly reliable feature. The absence of a black line running the length of the abdomen however confirms the species.

Another new species for me and proof that it wasn’t a one off sighting.

The Panama rose, also known as the fragrant Rondeletia, is the name given to two evergreen species of small shrubs with shiny green leaves and pinkish-red flowers. The name “rose” is misleading because the flowers don’t actually look like regular roses.

This guys known by a couple of names grey jay Canada jay and as they call them up north whiskey jacks

The common moniker “whiskey jack” has nothing to do with the grain-based alcohols, but is rather an anglicization of the Cree Wisakedjak and similar variations used by nations in the Algonquian language family, which makes the gray jay Canada's only bird commonly referred to by a traditional Indigenous name

Sows with cubs are known to be quite protective with their cubs. Everyone knows not to mess with a mama bear ... well except for the big boars who roam around with one thing in mind. They will do anything to get some "alone time" with the females, including kill their cubs so that they will be available. It's honestly one of the things that I fear the most when I'm out photographing the sows with cubs. I remember one day seeing a sow with 2 or 3 young spring cubs fishing a stream, then they disappeared. A while later we could hear screaming of the little ones and I feared the worse. I asked our guide if he thought the cubs were being attacked by a big boar we had also seen in the vicinity. He said no because the crying out was so prolonged. If it had been a boar attacking a cub, it would have been over long ago. We eventually found the little cubs way up in a tree ... unharmed. Whoever said only black bears climb trees?

So, this brown bear cub in the image wasn't one of those cubs, but it is another one seeking the same safety from a board in the area. Its mom sensing the danger for her cubs will send them literally scurrying up the nearest tree for safety. She will then fiercely defend against the boar. When it's safe, she will give a signal to the cubs who will shimmy on down the tree to reunite with mom.

These cubs in the trees are one of the cutest sights ever. So on alert and anxious about the frantic activity going on. They never question mom when she alerts them and promptly obey. So darned smart and adorable to watch.

Well, it's Monday again. Only 1 more after today before 2022. Yikes, where is the time going?

Phalaenopsis /ˌfælɨˈnɒpsɪs/ Blume (1825), known as the Moth Orchid, abbreviated Phal in the horticultural trade, is an orchid genus that contains approximately 60 species. Phalaenopsis is one of the most popular orchids in the trade, through the development of many artificial hybrids.

The generic name means "Phalaen[a]-like" and is probably a reference to the genus Phalaena, the name given by Carl Linnaeus to a group of large moths; the flowers of some species supposedly resemble moths in flight. For this reason, the species are sometimes called Moth orchids.

They are native throughout southeast Asia from the Himalayan mountains to the islands of Polillo, Palawan and Zamboanga del Norte in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and northern Australia. Orchid Island of Taiwan is named after this genus. Little recent information about their habitat and their ecology in nature is available since little field research has been done in the last decades.

Among birds, raptors are known for their sight, penguins for their huddling techniques, and some kingfishers are skillful divers. Some of these colorful and long-beaked birds dive headfirst into water to catch fish at break-neck speeds, all without damaging their brains. How they accomplish this feat is all in their genes.

The special type of diving kingfishers perform is called plunge-diving. Other birds including gannets and pelicans also plunge-dive, but it is not a common foraging method in the animal kingdom. While kingfishers don’t generally hurt themselves on these dives that can reach up to 25 miles per hour, they do not come without risk.

The barred owl, also known as the northern barred owl, striped owl or, more informally, hoot owl, is a North American large species of owl. A member of the true owl family, Strigidae, they belong to the genus Strix, which is also the origin of the family's name under Linnaean taxonomy.

Historically known as Hyde Park, Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is one of the region's oldest Hudson River estates. For nearly two centuries, this place has been home to socially prominent New Yorkers. A superb example of its type, Hyde Park represents the domestic ideal of the elite class in the late nineteenth-century America. It provides a glimpse of estate life, the social stratification of the period, and the world of the American millionaire during the era historians refer to as the Gilded Age.

Its main feature is a 54-room mansion by the distinguished architectural company McKim, Mead & White, with Charles Follen McKim designing the plan and Stanford White assisting by serving as an antiques buyer. Designed and built between 1896–1899, the house is a good example of the Beaux-Arts architecture style and one of the architects' finest residential projects. The interior of the mansion is an archetype of the American Renaissance, incorporating a range of European antiques and finely crafted period reproductions.

The village is known for the custom of painting huts. The custom of decorating rural rooms with floral paintings dates back to the end of the 19th century, when village women began to decorate the interiors of cottages with flowers made of tissue paper, cutouts and straw spiders hanging from the ceiling, and flowers painted on the walls. Paintings were also made on the external walls of buildings, wells and fences. There are currently about twenty painted houses in Zalipie

Sonnenberg Gardens, also known as Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park, Canandaigua, New York, USA, at the North end of Canandaigua Lake, in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The house and gardens are open to the public every day, May through October.

The property was once the summer home of Frederick Ferris Thompson, a prominent banker in New York City, and his wife Mary Clark Thompson, whose father, Myron Holley Clark, was Governor of New York State in 1855. The Clark family was from Canandaigua, NY. Mr. & Mrs. Thompson's main home was in NYC in a large townhouse on Madison Avenue. The Thompsons purchased the Sonnenberg property in 1863, keeping the name, Sonnenberg (which means "sunny hill" in German). In 1887, they replaced the original farmhouse with a forty-room Queen Anne style mansion. The property also had a 100-acre farm to the east. Sonnenberg's gardens were designed and built between 1902–1919, and originally consisted of nine gardens in a variety of styles.

Popularly known as 'Balloon Flowers', these lovely blooms only last for about a day. There are plenty of buds still in the 'balloon' stage (before they fully open) but they need 'dead-heading' to keep the plants blooming. Josephine Pryah wasn’t always known as such. Before the scars, before the job at the Ministry, before Hogwarts, she was known as Jorgia Prynce, the half-veela daughter of Beardsley Prynce, a muggle who now suffered from dementia…. Or so she thought. Unfortunately for her, Josephine’s true self would be hidden from her and held captive until she was in her 40’s and discovered a long hidden truth about her past. More specifically, her fathers past. It would come to be known that her father was not a muggle. No. He was in fact a pureblooded Wizard… a rather talented one at that. When he was once approached by the Deatheaters to join their cause, Beardsley denied them and continued his work as an Auror for the Ministry of Magic. He thought his denial was a simple rejection… how wrong he was.

When the events surrounding Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy’s great blunder in creating an alternate timeline occurred, Josephine would get a brief glimpse at the life she would have lived had her father agreed to join the Deatheaters. Raised alongside the twisted elite, Josephine was housed in Slytherin and taught the same morals of those around her. She quickly rose to be a great ally to the Dark Lord and his daughter. She played both spy and mercenary for him, using her Veela heritage to both seduce information out of enemies and capture them for Voldemort. She was never forced to go into hiding and never became the woman known as Josephine Pryah and was instead destined to be Jorgia Prynce, one of the most dangerous and powerful women in the Wizarding World. But that was another time, another life… and thankfully not one that remained for long.

Before and After

Known as the Nelly Thomas Home, it was built in about 1780, the oldest portion being a log structure. Board and batten was added in the mid-19th century. It was restored starting in 2001.

Known as Penny's Hospital, built in 1720 with funds from William Penny's estate. For "twelve ancient, indigent men."

Including a chapel for the residents (at the end of this picture) from 1770 it was also used as a Blue Coat charity school to teach boys reading, writing, and arithmetic.

William Penny was mayor of Lancaster three times.

The almshouses are still in use and the general public may visit the chapel after 10am daily. It is a haven of tranquility.

These Red Avadavats (also known as Strawberry finches) are in their peak breeding season. The males look superb - bright red with white spots on the body and are hard to miss. These are resident finches found throughout the year, but are in their breeding plumage from around june/july till December. Around 10 cms long, they can be seen around bushes and scrubs flying around. I don't think they started nesting yet, but thats due shortly after the rains end.

They nest in small dry bushes dotting the countryside and once the bush is selected, they start collecting nesting materials for the build. We came across a dozen of them on a visit to a grassland and all of them are in prime breeding plumage including the females. They haven't paired yet from what I can see and once that is done, I suppose the nest building begins.

Thank you so much in advance for your views, feedback and faves.

Matthew the Apostle, also known as Saint Matthew and possibly as Levi, was, according to the New Testament, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. According to Christian traditions, he was also one of the four Evangelists as author of the Gospel of Matthew, and thus is also known as Matthew the Evangelist, a claim rejected by most biblical scholars, though the "traditional authorship still has its defenders."

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered. 14674

I have never noticed the red blending into the blue like this before, but haven't got this close to one before either!

Used as either station transport or for shooting, the popularity of the design meant that major manufacturers such as Ford and Pontiac produced their own designs for the open market.

The 1937 Ford V8 was available with a number of bodies, including a convertible, sedan and pick-up truck as well as the Woody. After the Second World War, the Woody became popular in the U.S. surf scene, featuring in popular culture, such as the 1965 instrumental “Boogie Woodie” by The Beach Boys.

Also known as Celastrina idella, the Atlantic Holly Azure is possibly the only Azure species whose larvae depend on the evergreen holly. In Maryland, caterpillars eat flowers of American Holly (Ilex opaca) and in southern locations they consume flowers of Ilex glabra or Ilex vomitoria.

As the name implies, this butterfly is found along the Atlantic coast in the Coastal Plain only ranging from New Jersey to Georgia. It chooses moist forest habitats with vast stands of evergreen holly.

Celastrina idella looks remarkably similar to most other azures, but this species is univoltine with adults on the wing in early spring in Maryland where it is quite rare to find.

Loreos is most known for it's cavalry, but they can bring to bear ground troops to support extendend campaigns. One of the largest garrisons is based at Northgate Reserve a facility on the North side of Stowburn mountain.

Northgate Reserve has been a bastion of Loressi defense in the Northeast. She has seen her fair share of sieges, but she has never been taken. In times of war and invasion the local population flocks to her protective bosom for safety.

Lord Stout is currently the steward of garrison and his Son Gerrick leads the Stowburn Pride, the Cavalry arm of their forces. Together they take their men out for maneuvers and training.

Known for its friendly ‘cheet cheet’ call and energetic flying antics, the aptly named fantail is one of the most common and widely distributed native birds on the New Zealand mainland. Definitely hard to photograph in flight

This handsome specimen is a green iguana, which is likely an introduced species to the Caribbean island of Curacao, where I photographed it as it basked contently. Aside from the cool eye, you can easily make out the tympanum, which is the lizard's eardrum, just below and to the left of the eye. Below that is a large, white scale, known as the subtympanic shield, naturally.

Also known as Rouge Plant, Baby-peppers, Bloodberry, Rivina humbles (Phytolacaceae) is a native plant to Southern North America from Florida to Arizona, north to Oklahoma and Arkansas, south through Central America and the Caribbean to tropical South America. Pigeonberry appeals to the eye when it blooms pale pink (see below) and bears scarlet fruit simultaneously.

Known for its bandit-like appearance, the Polecat was once so persecuted it was on the brink of extinction in the UK. Numbers are now increasing in rural Wales and parts of England. These captive animals are seen at the British Wildlife Centre.

Known as Alba Coerulea Oculata, this lovely species tulip is growing in a pot on the steps to the patio.

Happy Wednesday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your support -- I greatly appreciate it.
