Kingfisher - Alcedo Atthis
Double click..
The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) also known as the Eurasian kingfisher, and river kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.
This sparrow-sized bird has the typical short-tailed, large-headed kingfisher profile; it has blue upperparts, orange underparts and a long bill. It feeds mainly on fish, caught by diving, and has special visual adaptations to enable it to see prey under water. The glossy white eggs are laid in a nest at the end of a burrow in a riverbank.
The female is identical in appearance to the male except that her lower mandible is orange-red with a black tip. The juvenile is similar to the adult, but with duller and greener upperparts and paler underparts. Its bill is black, and the legs are also initially black. Feathers are moulted gradually between July and November with the main flight feathers taking 90–100 days to moult and regrow. Some that moult late may suspend their moult during cold winter weather.
The flight of the kingfisher is fast, direct and usually low over water. The short rounded wings whirr rapidly, and a bird flying away shows an electric-blue "flash" down its back.
The common kingfisher is widely distributed over Europe, Asia, and North Africa, mainly south of 60°N. It is a common breeding species over much of its vast Eurasian range, but in North Africa it is mainly a winter visitor, although it is a scarce breeding resident in coastal Morocco and Tunisia. In temperate regions, this kingfisher inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams and rivers, and lakes with well-vegetated banks. It frequents scrubs and bushes with overhanging branches close to shallow open water in which it hunts. In winter it is more coastal, often feeding in estuaries or harbours and along rocky seashores. Tropical populations are found by slow-flowing rivers, in mangrove creeks and in swamps.
Like all kingfishers, the common kingfisher is highly territorial; since it must eat around 60% of its body weight each day, it is essential to have control of a suitable stretch of river. It is solitary for most of the year, roosting alone in heavy cover. If another kingfisher enters its territory, both birds display from perches, and fights may occur, in which a bird will grab the other's beak and try to hold it under water. Pairs form in the autumn but each bird retains a separate territory, generally at least 1 km (0.62 mi) long, but up to 3.5 km (2.2 mi) and territories are not merged until the spring.
Very few birds live longer than one breeding season. The oldest bird on record was 21 years.
They are also listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act offering them additional protection.

Tangara xanthocephala
(Saffron-crowned Tanager / Tángara coronada)
Saffron-crowned Tanager is a brightly colored tanager with a distinctive yellow head. This species occurs through the Andes from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia, and occupies humid montane forests and secondary woodlands.
Due to human destruction of habitat, it is hypothesized that the population numbers are decreasing. Like most Tangara tanagers, the Saffron-crowned is sexually monomorphic.

The Booted Racket-tail is an Andean hummingbird found from Colombia and Venezuela south to Bolivia. This is a spectacular hummingbird - males have a short blackish bill, metallic green body, black wings, and elaborate tail. The tail is long and green, and the central two rectrices are extended with bare rachises tipped with blunt "rackets". Females are white below with green speckles and a white-tipped tail lacking racketed elaboration.
Both sexes of Booted Racket-tail show puffy white leg feathers. This very small hummingbird favors humid woodland edges in mid-elevations in the Andes.

I caught this shot in YangShuo of China, I prefer the 1st one cos I sort of liked the leaves and the branches framing them....
I also had the chance to capture them without any branches/leaves but i thought it's a bit plain...

---
Every two hours, you can see an EuroCity on the 'Brennerbahn'. Most of these EC-trains run from München to Bologna (sometimes the EC comes from/runs to Venice or Verona). These EC-trains run with an Austrian locomotive series 1216. And a few of these locomotives have a special livery as you can see on the picture. This 1216 025-7 is the 'world record locomotive': September 2, 2006, this locomotive reached 357 km/h on the German high speed line between Nürnberg and Ingolstadt!

I drove 160 km, followed a long, completely muddy path, and crossed a closed bridge. I looked like a miner after a double shift. But then this view... What a fantastic night.

El Gorgo de la Escalera de Anna is a beautiful nature reserve near the village of Anna, about 70 km from the capital of Valencia. The waters of the River Sellent have formed this impressive gorge. Pools of gorgos in Valencian and several waterfalls have formed on this spot. There is a nice bypass to visit all three waterfalls. About an hour walk. You can hear the roar of the big waterfall, but you can't see it from the road because of the undergrowth. The first waterfall, El Gorgo de la Escalera, is directly accessible via 136 steps. Well worth going down the stairs, great for wading in crystal clear water in the summer. Look especially at the fish. In the cold water one can take a bath or just relax with the sight of the landscape and the sound of the water falling in the form of a waterfall into the depths of the ravine, once used for the production of electricity. You can cross the river at various places via stones and tree trunks or further on via a wooden bridge. The second waterfall is Cascada de los Vikingos and the third Gorgo Gaspar. From here you can return the same way you came, or climb a steep trail. The route is not long, but has difficult and slippery spots. Wearing good shoes is recommended. The place is very beautiful, green, humid, a surprising oasis in the steep gorge adjacent to the town of Anna. The corner it is in looks like a mini paradise.
The "Route of the Three Waterfalls" starts in the village of Anna in the province of Valencia. The concrete road turns to dirt as it enters the ravine. To the right of the bridge is Gorgo Gaspar. This is the first waterfall and pool on the route. From here, the path becomes more difficult and is also not signposted. The impressive Gorgo de los Vikingos is the second waterfall and pool. To follow the route, first, cross to the other side of the pool via the wooden planks. Then climb a steep, half-hidden path to the left of the waterfall. The route continues along the ravine, with the river on the left. At one point you’ll need to cross the wooden bridge over the river. You’ll have these views of Gorgo de la Escalera waterfall when crossing the bridge. The waterfall has a beautiful turquoise blue pool at its feet, and the huge natural pool. It’s framed by a natural amphitheatre with lush vegetation. Gorgo de la Escalera is a popular spot for water canyoning, hiking and wild swimming. Its double waterfall, the blue water and the natural luscious frame give it a magical air. The gorge is very steep.

The Leeds & Liverpool Canal is 127 miles (204 km) long and was built between 1770 and 1816 to connect the big industrial towns of Yorkshire and Lancashire to the port of Liverpool and America. It also connected to Hull and the North Sea via the Aire & Calder Navigation, and then to Europe and Africa.
We've been away over the past six weeks and drove 11,368 km through Northern Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and as far as we could go on British Columbia's Vancouver Island, to Port Renfrew. Along the way we had freezing temperatures, balmy summer heat, driving rain, and in Jasper, a snowstorm. We were lucky to have missed a tornado, a grizzly bear being chased by two parks officials with paint guns, golf ball size hail, forest fires, and back in Northern Ontario, inhaled enough forest fire smoke to make us (and the inside of the car) smell like a campfire. Canada is a big country and it makes sense that you run into all kinds of weather and have to allow for it. We hadn't anticipated running into a deer that popped out of the bushes right in front of us - the only thing hurt on the deer was pride but we had a broken grill on the car. Sadly, on the way back, a large buck was killed by a truck right in front of us in nearly the same area.
It was an amazing trip that should have happened right around when the pandemic started and I came back with 3588 images that will keep me busy for a while. Catching up on Flickr will take me a while. This image was of the Fisgard lighthouse, built in 1860 and still marks the harbor of the Royal Canadian Navy's Pacific fleet. We had noticed earlier that lights were arranged to light up the tower and as we waited for blue hour, a cruise liner drifted slowly by. It looked like a floating city.

The first outing in my book "Ridgewalks in the Canadian Rockies, second edition” describes a long but rewarding day in Waterton Lakes National Park taking in Vimy Peak and Vimy Ridge to its east. This image from the townsite shows whitecaps on Upper Waterton Lake, an indication of typically windy Waterton weather, and the summit of Vimy Peak. The trip I describe takes trail and a bit of scrambling that lead to the top from behind the ridge to the left. Vimy Ridge lies directly behind the high point.
As mentioned, it’s a big commitment — involving some 35 km total distance and over 1000 metres of elevation gain and loss. If you have lots of energy and a long summer day, it’s well worth checking out.

Apricale is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Imperia in the Italian region Liguria, located close to the french border, about 120 km northwest of Genoa and about 30 km west of Imperia. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 592.
The village was established on the X Century by the Earl of Ventimiglia. On 1276 it became a possession of the Doria Family, the most powerfull family in Genoa.
On 1573 the Grimaldi from Monaco destroyed the castle.
Down into the narrow valley dividing Apricale from the village of Perinaldo lays a charachteristic middle-age bridge.
