A Killer Whale (Oscinus orca) breeches beside the cruise ship entertaining all those who were aware of its presence.

We were fortunate to observe this wonder of nature during our first ocean cruise which was to Alaska, U.S.A.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !!

Today is a pink or purple day at Color my World Daily and the theme on Smile on Saturday is fish.

I must admit: we dont have that much fishes around here…. we dont have any « cute » and adorable fishes for sure… At first I tried to watch a tutorial on Youtube : DIY cute fish for not very crafty people, but then I just decided to go with what I had: a very mean looking killer whale ( is that a fish ??? Will it be accepted for this challenge ??? I dont know, but I hope so !)…

Killer whales are well known for their love of eggs. They are just like me : very, very egg obsessed !! So you can see in this picture, from National Geographic, special edition : the secret life of killer whales (LOL LOL ), how the killer whale approaches his victime, the egg.

Of course, having no eyes or ears, the poor egg has no idea what is coming …And of course, since this is a family friendly Photostream we will not show any gruesome details of this attack. The egg was never seen again. The end.

Who else was traumatized by the movie Jaws ???

Happy CMWD and happy SOS to all participants !! And for the rest of us : happy day !!

Thank you so much for all your lovely comments / favs/ general support / happy thoughts!! Stay safe and healthy!! And see you soon on Flickr !!

The Loggerhead shrike is a medium-sized songbird endemic to North America. It is nicknamed the butcherbird after its carnivorous tendencies, as it consumes prey such as amphibians, small birds, and even small mammals, and some prey ends up displayed and stored at a site, for example in a tree. Due to its small size and weak talons, this predatory bird relies on impaling its prey upon thorns or barbed wire for easier consumption.

Loggerhead shrikes are found across southern Canada, much of the USA, and Mexico. Northern populations are migratory while birds from the southern part of their range are sedentary. Loggerhead shrikes require an open habitat with an area to forage, elevated perches, and nesting sites. They are often found in open pastures or grasslands and prefer red-cedar and hawthorn trees for nesting. The hawthorn's thorns and the cedar's pin-like needles protect and conceal these birds from predators. They may also nest in fence-rows or hedge-rows near open pastures and require elevated perches as lookout points for hunting.

Loggerhead shrikes are carnivores (insectivores). They feed on insects, but also consume arachnids, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, bats and small birds. Due to their small size in proportion to the size of their prey, shrikes must rely on specialized adaptations to facilitate their hunting. The powerful, hooked beak allows them to sever the neck of a small vertebrate. Larger prey are subjected to impaling, in which they are pushed down into a sharp projection, such as a thorn or barbed wire. Shrikes can then tear off flesh by using the projection as an anchor. They may also use the thorn to fasten and store their food to return to at a later time.

I found this killer along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.

I spent Saturday out photographing birds with [https://www.flickr.com/photos/rickwilhoit] and a visiting birder from South Africa. Aside from the pleasure of finally meeting one of my Flickr friends in person, it was a terrific day and we had a nice set of representative local birds, but one of the more interesting things we saw was this Eastern Towhee being driven off by a Pipevine Swallowtail. I've never seen a butterfly acting territorially before, but he definitely did not want the towhee there... Weldon Spring Conservation Area

A pod of Killer Whales (Orcinus orca) swims in search of salmon or other prey along the west shores of Alaska near Juneau, U.S.A.

The male is easily identified by the tall, straight dorsal fin and this pod was observed during a recreational cruise to Alaska.

A Lesser Adjutant stork (Leptoptilos javanicus) was standing tall and handsome in its habitat for the early morning breakfast while it was framed from close. The personality of the stork was beautifully depicted here with a perfect looks on offer highlighting the long powerful beak. One can have here the glimpse of the power of it. The stork is vulnerable now globally. Pics was taken from Teesta river side in New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, India.

TMD EVENT

Despite their small stature, velvet ants are actually known to have one of the most painful stings in the insect world, giving them the name, “cow killer”. Despite looking like ants, these are actually flightless wasps with the female living their life along the ground and the males, who have wings, in the air. I haven’t actually seen one of these before but was aware that there were many different species across Arizona. Lucky for me, I was finally able to find one in my backyard and it was willing enough to let me take a few shots.

That's an Orca/Killer Whale in it's natural habitat! Was treated to this breach on a Whale-watching tour off Anacortes, WA.

Little did they know of the secret she is keeping. Nobody suspected her to be a cold-blooded killer.
