Slim Goodbody ("the Superhero of Health", also known as Mr. Goodbody) is a fictional character created and performed by John Burstein. Burstein created the character in 1975. He performs wearing a sometimes white, sometimes flesh colored unitard with various tissues, organs and organ systems painted in biologically-accurate locations and sizes. Between 1976-80 he appeared twice a week on the CBS show Captain Kangaroo.

Slim Goodbody eventually received his own television series in 1980, Inside Story on PBS.

I was on the Bozo Show in 1978.

I didn't get chosen to play the Grand Prize game, rather some other game during the show that involved pushing a plastic peanut across the room in a group relay effort.

Actually, the producers asked if any of us might prefer to play the Grand Prize game and as a 6 year old I really wrestled with this option, in the end deciding if I switched I would be ungrateful for the opportunity I'd been given already, and decided to stick with it.

I learned something about how fake TV is--because on TV they showed the game participants being chosen via a "magic arrow" that flew around on our TV screen, but the reality was kids were chosen while outside the studio, waiting in line to be seated.

I don't think my team won the Push the Peanut game. But we all got consolation prizes: a box of Twinkies and a "Mugshots" game. Mugshots was a memory game where you get a brief look at the perp, and then try to reconstruct his face (they were all men) from a library of cellophane overlays of features: eyes, eyebrows, lips, facial hair, ears, built atop a card stock base of the head and hair. How Chicago is that?

It was getting cold in here - a jumpsuit with a sweater and all of a sudden, I seem to be hosting a kids' show.

A welcome find...I used to listen to this record when I was 4 or 5, and it disappeared in the intervening years.Just found this copy. The show marked the first appearance of Fred Rogers and his puppets. Released in 1954.

I got the monsters from the show off the Nick Jr. Website, they have free printables of them there. I bought a 4 pack of t-shirts from the store, washed and dried them, then ironed the characters on the shirts. I never knew this show existed until Owen showed it to me. Now I have "Party in my Tummy" stuck in my head forever!

I love finding new ways to recycle old toys as in the case with this cute little skating Elmo figure. As part of a grab bag of odd toys I got this little skating version of arguably the most popular Sesame Street character; Elmo. It was bright and colorful but also worn from hopefully many hours of enjoyment by a kid or a weird adult. The black smudge on his eye gave me the inspiration for this figure. What if Sesame Street was rated R?

The series could go in many excellent directions if it were rated R. Just take a moment to think about all the weird, funny, horrific and amazing ways Sesame Street could appeal to adults. Go on, I will wait…………………..no, think more dramatic! Use your imagination buddy!...........

Well I hope you have some awesome ideas in your head. Maybe one day Sesame Street will go rated R! For this toy I wanted to play with the idea of him skating and getting hurt yet still being cheery about it. Kind of how talk shows downplay real issues for things and just promotes shopping. So I took little Elmo here under the hobby knife to do some modifications. I cut his arm, stomach, foot, shoulder and elbow. His arm is barley attracted now. I guess my other inspiration was parents that over-react when a kid gets a small scratch and they think the kids is on Death’s door-steps.

Along with the cuts I cut out part of his brain underneath a yellow painted helmet. I’m planning on sculpting part of a brain for him to hold in his right hand. Maybe a plague below could say “Today we are learning about the letter B”. As in brains and blood. I had the bizarre idea to cut his eye out and have him hold it as if he could still see from it. Everything is ok, continue to spend that disposable income Charlie! The bland wide-eyed face is hilarious in this setting to me.

I wanted the paint job to be more adult in nature but not ruin the character like that of the character design in the movie Superman Returns – Readers may now pause to puke at thinking of watching Superman Returns. So I painted the toy in a hull red color to make the blood have more contrast. And look EXTREME! Speaking of the blood I put different shades of reds around the cuts and a few drops on his skates. Its really harder than I thought to paint blood. The last step will be to add gloss coat to all the blood spots I think to look like fresh wounds.

Some future ideas are to paint red veins on the eyes, lighter shades of pink on the blood spots, shade more details, add small bandage to his nose, sculpt part of the brain coming out of the helmet and create a base. I don’t know what to do for the base, I’m bad at thinking of base ideas. So please help if you have a cool yet simple idea. Maybe a set of staircases? Time for some re-runs of Sesame Street!

For the poster I was inspired by the trailer to Rambo, the 2008 version. Because in the trailer they wanted to show some pretty brutal stuff but the censors would not allow them so they blocked everything out with this ugly looking artificial mud. So I photographed the character against red, a hard challenge but it also makes the scene over-dramatic and it looks more horrific than it is. Then afterwards I went crazy putting the most Fox News and Nancy Grace thinking I could into the poster copy. While it’s meant to be sarcastic there is some truth in being responsible for your own kid. And that taking away swing-sets, slides and jungle gyms is really an un-needed dumb exercise and a real shame for kids.

When I’m done I will put some pictures up of it against better contrasting background to see details more. This is just for fun and to see how the project is going. It’s hard to finish models I find. All the little details get super tedious. Opening a bottle, stirring it, cleaning brushes just for one little dot of paint. I enjoy the grand aspect and planning more than the grunt work.

If you have any ideas, critiques, painting suggestions / tips / complaints please let me know. Just don’t defend Superman Returns for any reason or I will go Big Bird on you!

Testing Helios 44M-4 58mm f2 lens... loose focusing ring, kinda tough to get sharp focus. Coloring goes heavy towards reds. Used on Sony A7ii; this was the best of the lot.

Does anyone else remember this from the 80's? It is just so gross.

The little red fur ball called out to me one day asking for a diorama home to live in. With a little bit of fearing for my life I swiftly complied. Well actually he did not talk to me. If he did that would be really weird and I might need some mental health checkups. Well more than the usual amount of crazy. Anyway this is what I have done so far in the picture.

My idea was to show Elmo on the stairs of a house. It was the most iconic simple location I could think of so I got started making it.

The base and background wall are going to be made from free flooring samples that I picked up at an over-priced home store. These are really sturdy MDF boards great for this kind of work. Plus, it seems they are simple to glue together and for when applying things to them.

I made the staircases out of sheets of styrene. And boy did I not cut those things straight at all. I’m a novice when it comes to scratching building I will admit and I just can’t seem to figure out how to cut a straight line – I feel I need some sort of jig. I was using a straight edge, but something happened when I would score the plastic sheets. Time to look up better ways to do it.

But for this I think it will pass.

I cut out enough material for three stairs but am waiting for the glue to dry more on the stairs till I add the final step. At a distance you can’t really tell that I did not cut the edges perfectly straight and I hope you would be more focused on the distorted Elmo figure anyways. I might cover the steps in a light layer of plaster to give it that concrete look. Or just glue it all over and apply some sand texture.

I’m not sure what I will do for the background. Some ideas are as follows; add a door and part of the entry way of a house, a bush or fern on left of the stairs, a mail box on the concrete wall that will be crumbled to give the idea that the neighborhood is falling apart. I’m not sure if I will leave the wagon in the diorama or not. It might be better for a different project – thoughts? In its place I might instead add a mail box. I was also thinking of adding a police chalk outline of Big Bird for humor sake.

Well that’s all I can think of now for this update. Once again let me know any comments or suggestions you might have and happy modeling. Unless you are a real model than that’s pretty cool and invite on a vacation to the Bahamas!

8 mm home video of Rex Trailer, host of Boston's local TV show "Boomtown", at the old theme park Pleasure Island in Wakefield, MA.

July, 1965

Me at the Uncle Al show. I'm the blond kid, second row, first on the left. I look like I can't wait to get out of there. Liz Acra, a friend of the family and for me a future grade school teacher, is the woman in the back row on the right below the thing that says Uncle Al Farm.

For those that don't know, The Uncle Al Show was a kids TV show filmed in Cincinnati in the 60's and 70's. His wife, Captain Wendy is the woman standing in the middle. She did really cool drawings (at least they were to a little kid) live on the air. As near as I can remember, I think most males in the greater Cincinnati area, both pre and post pubescent, were in love with Captain Wendy.
