Ha una livrea giallo pallida, a fasce trasversali bruno-nerastre, a forma di V dirette verso l'angolo dell'ala anteriore. In alcune varietà il colore di fondo può essere bianco e le fasce essere di un nero marcato. Ha un'apertura alare di 6.5–8 cm. Le ali posteriori hanno delle macchie ocellate arancioni e azzurre e le code sono piuttosto allungate e scure

Although i had seen these cliffs from a distance several times while driving through Canterbury to Otago, I had never visited the Omarama Clay Cliffs until recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the textures and colours on display at this formation made of gravel and silt that was deposited by rivers that flowed here millions of years ago.

A widespread, but local, wild orchid in England mainly on base-rich soils over limestone, chalk, clay and calcareous sand in grassland, scrub, dunes, limestone pavement, road verges, abandoned quarries and waste ground. It is scarce in Devon, being mainly restricted to the East Devon coast, the Torbay limestone and Braunton Burrows but appears to be increasing in places around Exeter.
