I found the stairway to heaven this morning at Jupiter ISland during sunrise at the beach in Coral Cove Park. HDR image created using Aurora HDR Software by Macphun.

A rather quick and unexpected family weekend trip to Jupiter Island gave me the opportunity to change scenery and shoot some photographs at the Coral Cove Park.

This is one location I wanted to visit for some time. The coral rock formations and water flow are very interesting, and give the image composition a lot of detail and drama.

Lucky enough, the sunrise cooperated nicely. To give this picture an extra touch of interest, I timed my shooting for a little fishing boat crossing the sun's path during my multiple exposures for HDR processing work.

The tide was really low, the lowest I have ever seen there, so I went for a little walk along the rocky shoreline and found this little cave. Of course I had to take a peek inside. And as I turned round the sun popped up over the horizon. Cloudy as it was I didn't expect that. Also the tide just turned and started coming in... fast. Time to get outta there.

It's been a while I've been on here... again. Wishing y'all a belated Happy New Year 2017!

I've been out and about shooting, but mostly only put the shots on my personal Facebook page, some on my public FB page and on Instagram. OK, IG I use mostly for my iPhone shots taken on the way to work.

Anyhow... here's a shot from Saturday morning taken at Coral Cove Park. Surf was up, well the tide was incoming. High tide was about 2 hours out, but with a rather stiff breeze from the east the waves were really crashing over the rocks and I had a hard time keeping both, my feet and the lens, dry. I had more success with my feet than with the lens.

Guess what? I have more shots of "The Rocks" at the Blowing Rocks Preserve. I went there AGAIN today, this time with Michael.

The light was totally different than last week. Last Sunday the pre-sunrise colors were all a vivid pink (which I missed as I was late), today it was a vibrant orange. It was also lower tide and less windy hence there wasn't too much surf or waves...

If you have the time, please view it large on black.

If I were a cloud

I’d choose a tropical sky

Drifting above oceans

Soaring ever so high

I’d admire my reflection

In the deep blue sea

And create magical shapes

For all the world to see

I’d carry rain to the mountains

And shade to the shore

Traverse countries and continents

In search of mysteries to explore

If I were a cloud

I would fly

Loud and proud.

Insomnia hit again last night and I was up at 3:00 am. Checking the weather it said it's currently "partly cloudy" in Jupiter and will be "mostly cloudy" by 7:00 am. Sunrise was at 6:30 am. No rain in the forecast. Excellent!

In the past partly cloudy usually meant no clouds, and mostly cloudy... well some clouds.

Off I went just before 4:00 am. An hour later just as I was getting off I-95 it started to rain. Grrr...eat! But it stopped. Whew! So as I pulled off the road at Coral Cove 15 minutes later I thought I better take another look at the weather forecast. I didn't fancy getting caught in a downpour on my way to Blowing Rocks. It is a 20 minutes hike along the beach after all. Well, well, well... The first thing I saw was that the forecast had been "upgraded" and the current weather was "fair"... yeah right!

Does this look like fair weather to you? At least it didn't rain.

Jupiter? Looks More Like Mars.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL

View On Black

I got up at 3:45 am yesterday morning to drive the 80 or so miles up to Jupiter Island to meet up with my friends and shoot the sunrise at Blowing Rocks Preserve. I’ve been there before, but figured if I don’t go they’ll get the most amazing clouds, the clouds I am still chasing… LOL. It looked like I got lucky, because there were clouds… yeah… We had some nice sky, orange horizon, blue sky and grayish clouds.

I set up my first shot 30 minutes before sunrise, fire off three shots and they all looked purple. I usually shoot in AWB and although my camera sometimes has the tendency to see colors when I don’t see any, this was a bit weird. No matter what white balance I used, all I got was purple or red. This is one of the shots I took with the WB set to “cloudy”, which really turned things red. Once the sun came up the colors were fine.

Maybe it was that sand blowing in from the Sahara desert they were talking about in the news?

Oh, I am sure I could fiddle around a bit more in Lightroom to get the colors I saw, but well, call me lazy. And I kinda like the red tones, although I found it a bit strange.

But the weird colors were soon my least concern. I was merrily shooting away, when I all of a sudden noticed a strange line running across part of my image. I was like “what is that?” When I looked at it closer, I saw I had that line in all my shots. I had cleaned the sensor the night before to remove some dust spots and now I have a line running across my images. Did I scratch the sensor? I panicked…

Silly, really, as I didn’t touch the senor and even if I would have I don’t think that glass scratched that easily.

I tried the sensor clean, the line stayed were it was. Darn it! I didn’t have my rocket blower with me, besides it was rather windy at the beach and I had no intention of taking the lens off anyway. So after missing the sunrise because of that I just kept shooting. Eventually, after doing a “sensor clean” for like 10 times the line moved ever so slightly. Whew! At least it’s not a scratch.

I did a manual clean once I got home and it looks like whatever it was is gone, but that really freaked me out.

Jupiter, located in Palm Beach County, Florida was originally named for the Hobe Indian tribe which lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. A mapmaker misunderstood the Spanish spelling "Jobe" of the Indian name "Hobe" and recorded it as "Jove". Subsequent mapmakers assumed this to be the Latin translation of the god Jupiter, so they anglicized the name from Jove to Jupiter.

The Nature Conservancy's Blowing Rocks Preserve offers something one might not expect in Florida. Florida is known for its straight stretches of sandy beaches lined with hotels and condominiums. It's not known for rocky beaches resembling the lava rock lined beaches of Hawaii and other volcanic islands.

However, there are areas that offer something close to it in Florida. One is the Blowing Rocks Preserve, which is limited in its operating hours to 9 am - 4:30 pm. However, yhat is not a good thing for sunrise or sunset photography ... www.danielnovakphoto.com/blog

If but only for a beach alongside the sea,

Be it Maui, Bimini, or any Florida Key.

There’s no other place that speaks to my soul.

Like a clear blue lagoon or breezy ocean shoal.

From latitudes to longitudes,

And the elusive southern cross

Everything beneath a tropical sun,

Becomes my mental floss.

My Saturday morning consisted of waking up before dawn and driving up to Jupiter Island, FL. Once there I had to walk about a mile from Coral Cove beach to Blowing Rocks since it was before the park opened. Once there is was well worth it

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL

I have uploaded a "portrait" version of the storm cloud to the left earlier this week. This was taken about 10 minutes later as the sun was rising (in the center of the shot) bathing the clouds to the left in orange and the clouds to the right in pink light.

More detail can be seen in the larger view.

Jupiter Island is a town located on the barrier island also called Jupiter Island, in Martin County, Florida, United States; the town is part of Florida's Treasure Coast. It is part of the Port St. Lucie metropolitan area. The Town of Jupiter Island is located next to the unincorporated community of Hobe Sound. The population of Jupiter Island was 804 at the 2020 census.

Some of the wealthiest people in the United States live in Jupiter Island; the June 1999, issue of Worth magazine ranked it #1 in the country for having the highest median home sale, and it has the highest per capita income by ZIP Code Tabulation Area of any place in the US.

The approximate coordinates for the Town of Jupiter Island is located at 27°3′26″N 80°6′49″W (27.057287, –80.113616).[7]

It occupies the barrier island of the same name from the Palm Beach County line in the south to the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge boundary in the north. It is bordered to the west by Hobe Sound and South Jupiter Narrows, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2), of which 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) are land and 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), or 24.30%, are water.

This is another shot from my first morning visit to "the rocks". There was more surf and stronger winds blowing in from the East, so there was some splashing going on. But to really see those rocks "blowing", I think it needs a minor hurricane or at least a tropical storm...

So you know where I gonna be if we should get a tropical storm warning this season. :-D

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know

His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below

...and My Feet Were Wet.

For this one I climbed down the the rocks and shot from sea level... and as I said got my sneakers wet doing so. Those waves were anything put predictable. The rocks you see in so many of my other shots were behind me and to the left of me and about 6 ft. high.
