Juno beach was the name given to this place for the D-Day landings of June 6 1944 - but before that this was a vacation paradise. And despite all the World War II enthusiasts in the area, today it is still a popular bathing destination. This day was perhaps a bit cold for that, but people still enjoyed the seaside life.

Along the eastern coast of Florida, lies a barrier island facing the Atlantic Ocean harboring Juno Beach. The town was incorporated in 1953. Typically, the population never exceeds 1500 but is testament to the states natural beauty with an interesting history dating back to european exploration in the 1600’s. Remnants of Spanish ships can be found if one was to venture offshore.

In November, I visited dear friends just outside of Fort Lauderdale for 3 weeks and quickly became hopelessly in love with the people, climate, vast photographic opportunities and the amazing array of nightlife activities.

I returned to my home state in Connecticut, and felt like a child separated from his mother for the first time. I’m seriously considering moving south and trying to make a new life.

Connecticut at one time held me captive but in the last decade my life has significantly changed and I believe I’m hearing a calling to move in 2016. Very little is holding me here now and the promise of a new life is imminent.

Thank you everyone who has supported my photographic adventure so far. Without your fav’s, comments, and encouragement my life’s path wouldn’t be the same.

This windswept stretch of beach was very peaceful when I visited a number of years ago. But on June 6, 1944 this stretch of Normandy beach by the town of Courseulles-sur-Mer, and given the codename Juno Beach by the allied command, was a living hell to those brave young Canadian men who landed there as part of the D-Day invasion. 359 young Canadians were killed and another 715 were wounded that fateful day, but the mission was successful and just over 11 months later, Germany surrendered ending WWII in Europe. Take a moment today to remember the sacrifice these brave young men and all the other allied troops made that day on the Normandy beaches.

June 6, 1944 Allied forces landed on five beaches in Normandy, France launching Operation Overlord, the retaking of Europe from the Axis powers. Thousands on both sides died on the beaches this day as narrow beach heads were established before the Allies commenced the long journey to retake the continent and head towards Berlin. Many thousands more on both sides would die along the way before the conflict came to an end. This is one of those beaches, Juno. (Archive shot 2013)

As a human race, we have never learnt the lessons have we?

"Our revels now are ended. These our actors,

As I foretold you, were all spirits and

Are melted into air, into thin air:

And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,

The cloud-capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces,

The solemn temples, the great globe itself,

Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve

And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,

Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff

As dreams are made on, and our little life

Is rounded with a sleep."

Man plans, the Gods laugh.

We had made plans to go back to Scotland this summer, I hear laughter from above.

"The landings initially encountered heavy resistance from the German 716th Division; the preliminary bombardment proved less effective than had been hoped, and rough weather forced the first wave to be delayed until 07:35. Several assault companies—notably those of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada—took heavy casualties in the opening minutes of the first wave. Strength of numbers, coordinated fire support from artillery and armoured squadrons, cleared most of the coastal defences within two hours of landing. The reserves of the 7th and 8th brigades began deploying at 08:30 (along with the Royal Marines), while the 9th Brigade began its deployment at 11:40."
