Some call this bright orange butterfly "the flame," and it's easy to see why. Most call it Julia, or Julia heliconian. In any case, it's Dryas iulia, scientifically speaking.
Julia adults have a wider list of flowers from which they like to nectar. The list includes lantana and Spanish needles aka shepherd's needles, as shown in the photo above, and creeping oxeye as shown in the middle photo below. It travels the same routes daily to forage for nectar, a process called trap-lining.

Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia butterfly, Julia heliconian, the flame, or flambeau, is a species of brush-footed (or nymphalid) butterfly. The sole representative of its genus Dryas, it is native from Brazil to southern Texas and Florida, and in summer can sometimes be found as far north as eastern Nebraska. Looking Close On Friday-Spirals
I have always been fascinated by Fractals. The one I've always known about is the Mandelbrot Set : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mandelbrot_set but after acquiring the FRAX app on my iPad I became aware of the Julia Set: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_set I don't understand the math all that well that is involved with these intricate sets but I sure do like making them! This is one I made yesterday. I took a photo of it with my camera so it's not really a screen shot.

This is for you, Don Cannan. I met your friend Julia at her 6 yo granddaughter's birthday party. She saw me walking around with my camera in hand and asked if I was in a camera club. She confessed that she was in TWO camera clubs and proceeded to show me her photos on her phone.
When I heard that she lived in Victor Harbour and was active in the camera club there, I had to ask after Don and didn't you know it, she was best buddies with him from a long time ago.
I took this photo to demonstrate the power of the iPhone Portrait Mode which lets you use a DOF slider to blur out the background. We tried doing this on her Android phone but were unsuccessful.

I visited the Butterfly Place in Westford, MA, today, in the middle of the day, when the light was good. It's amazing to have so many butterflies everywhere, and such a large variety.
Edisto Island, SC..Julia Legare died at age 22 in 1852. A few years after her death there was another death in the family. Opening the tomb, in the corner was a pile of bones and the remains of her burial garments. The back of the tomb door was covered with scratch marks. The door was often found open.. At some point in time, the door was removed to stop the eerie event, today you can peer in...money is often left for Julia.

Emerald Valley is renowned for its biodiversity, with over 700 butterfly species identified within its 20-manzana (approximately 34-acre) reserve. The higher ISO was essential to manage the dense forest lighting, and the f/11 setting aimed to capture the intricate wing details while allowing some motion blur. As a photographer, working in such a rich ecological setting alongside passionate conservationists like Robert Gallardo and guides like Elizabeth Rivera has been profoundly inspiring.
