It doesn't appear to be functional, but it's sure a fantastic conversation piece.
[23 June 2023 — Dixie Chicken Bar, College Station, TX]
Today was the official release date of a 1973 Little Feat album, “Dixie Chicken.” This 50th Anniversary Deluxe 2023 reissue contains newly remastered versions of all of the original 1973 tracks and an additional 15 tracks including demos, rarities, outtakes, and a complete live show from 1973. The album is packaged as a trifold long playing record set and includes a new booklet that details the origins and other information about the album itself and each song.
Ron Claiborne, Texas A&M ’84 was on hand to pull the wrapping off of the 2023 Deluxe Edition and brought along his original 1973 vinyl release and a cassette tape issue as well.
Ron said, “I was 11 years old in Houston when 'Dixie Chicken” was released in 1973. I started A&M in 1980 as an 18 year old Aggie freshman. At one point, I lived a semester in Hotard Hall which is directly behind the post office across the street from the Dixie Chicken. We had one wall phone per floor—you kept your doors open so you could hear the phone ring. Someone was always blasting Little Feat on their turntable.”
He went on to say that when someone is 18 years old, away from the parents, the drinking age is 18, and your dorm is yards away from the Dixie Chicken, you’re going to start thinking, “Do I really need to go to freshman chemistry, or should I go to the Chicken instead? This Little Feat album was still very popular in 1980 and when they would play the title cut, there would be a customer participation ’sing along’ in the Chicken. When I was in the military in Europe, you’d occasionally go to a pub in the middle of nowhere and hear the title track being played on the jukebox.”
“I have a large music collection.” said Ron. “Well over 5,000 albums. Thanks to the home music server, I can manage them. I checked today and I have 40 different versions of the track, “Dixie Chicken” for a total of 5 hours, 8 minutes play time. Most are Little Feat performances, but there a few covers as well. The longest version is 17:45 from the Little Feat album, ‘High Wire Act — Live in St. Louis.”
Oh… Did you ever wonder about the story behind the album cover? It’s in the new booklet. Seems the concept for the artwork was based on an actual event that involved two of the Little Feat musicians who shared an apartment in Hollywood, a “working girl”, and a real accordion. Now everyone knows.

Oh my Mama
She gave me these feathered breaths
Oh my Mama
She told me use your voice,
My little bird
She said sing sing sing sing sing sing melodies
And she sang sang sang sang sang sang melodies
Oh my Mama
She did give me fancy feet
I'll be dancing on
And I'll tap tap tap my toes
Into those creaking floorboards
Oh my Mama
She took my little hand and held on tight
Oh the Mamas
Give the waters of their wells
Oh the Mamas
Give the babies this very dirt we're walking on
Oh my Mama
She gave me these feathered breaths
And your Mama
She gave you those feathered breaths too
And when the sky drops all those feathers
And when the birds sing in the morning
I'll be a mama
I'll have a daughter
I'll be a mama
I'll have a daughter
And I'll give her melodies
I'll give her melodies
(repeat)
And she'll be
My little bird
And then she'll fly
She'll fly

This is the most beautiful song in memory of all mothers out there. I cry every time I hear this song. My mother is not dead but she is lost to me and my family with Alzheimer's and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish she was 'here' to be my mama again.
I wish all you mums out there a wonderful weekend celebrating all you do!
