What makes this tree (Cercis siliquastrum) special is certainly its luxuriant flowering that first appears on the bark of the trunk and then on the branches. The flowers, in fact, appear on the bare bark even before the leaves and then thicken on the branches until they are completely enveloped.

The color of the flowers generally ranges from pink to purple and usually explodes in a floral blaze that lasts only one month: from March to April.

Also called Judas tree, supposedly the one he hanged himself on after Jesus was imprisoned

In the month of May, the Judas Tree flowers brightly in the Master's garden.

One theory for the name is that it originates from the French Arbre de Judée - Tree of Judea.

Wikipedia reports the myth that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this species.

Its botanical name is Cercis siliquastrum.

The deep pink flowers are produced on year-old or older growth, including the trunk, in spring. This flower shape is typical of the pea family. The leaves appear shortly after the first flowers emerge. The tree produces long flat pods that hang vertically. The flowers are edible and reportedly have a sweet-acid taste.

In the flush of love's light, we dare be brave. And suddenly we see that love costs all we are, and will ever be. Yet it is only love which sets us free.

Judas tree - Cercis siliquastrum

Fresh from our garden, have a lovely week :-))

Cercis siliquastrum is a small deciduous tree from Southern Europe and Western Asia which is noted for its prolific display of deep pink flowers in spring. This species forms a small tree up to 12 m (39 ft) in height and 10 m (32 ft) in width.

The deep pink flowers are produced on year-old or older growth, including the trunk, in spring. Also, the flowers display a blossom with five free petals and fused sepals. This flower shape is typical of the pea family (Fabaceae). The leaves appear shortly after the first flowers emerge. These are cordate with a blunt apex, which occasionally has a shallow notch at the tip. The tree produces long flat pods that hang vertically. The flowers are edible and purportedly have a sweet-acid taste.

There is a myth that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from a tree of this species, causing its white flowers to turn red. This belief is related to the common name "Judas tree", which is possibly a corrupted derivation from the French common name, Arbre de Judée, meaning tree of Judea, referring to the hilly regions of that country where the tree used to be common. Another possible source for the vernacular name is the fact that the flowers and seedpods can dangle direct from the trunk in a way reminiscent of Judas's possible method of suicide. legend has it that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from this tree after he betrayed Jesus.

Spring has never truly arrived until you catch sight of your first beetree bumblebees are one of our most common species. They are also the species most likely to colonise nest boxes, and are found in habitats ranging from woodland to gardens. Some of their favourite flowers include rhododendrons, brambles and

comfrey. Common carder bee

These beautiful little bees are the only UK species with all-brown colouring and no white tail. They range from ginger to a pale, sandy brown, depending on how sun-bleached they are.

Common carder bees are very common and are found everywhere from arable land to urban gardens. Gorse is a favourite food plant alongside things like dandelions, bluebells, dead-nettles, comfrey, selfheal and foxgloves

Many early-flowering trees produce flowers from naked branches and trunks before their leaves come out. Such a one is this Cercis. Its common name is often given as Judas Tree. Apparently that's because its rounded leaves were thought to resemble the thirty pieces of silver Judas was paid for his betrayal of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The 'siliquastrum' of its specific name is derived from the Greek word for a weaver's shuttle; perhaps even of use for producing cloth to cover up against our present chilly and rainy weather...

This Redbud tree had red leaves, in stead of the usual green.
