The ubiquitous Cholla Cactus in Joshua Tree - they're everywhere! They're also known as "jumping cactus" because the spikes have a seemingly magical ability to reach out and grab your skin or clothing - my shins still have a few scars from ones I missed. I love the way their spikes catch early morning and late afternoon rays.

Had always wanted to photograph these cactus and finally got a chance spring of 2019. Who needs clouds when you have these creatures! And watch your step ;)
Aloha!

I relied on very dim LLL to balance the illumination on the closest tree and avoid a harsh silhouette created by the moon. The primary tree in this image was perhaps 25 feet tall. I really liked the various pastels that developed on the horizon as darkness crept in and the desert got cold. The moon just kept getting brighter, which was not the original idea/vision for this shot and it finally ended up casting shadows. The dynamic range of the Z8 allowed the colors of the plants across the ground to be retained nicely. I was only about a mile across open desert from where I parked, but relied on a gps to point me back in the dark because everything looks the same out there.
I dream of gardens in the desert sand ...
more Joshua trees, such beautiful creatures.
