13th March 1897 Joseph Conrad and his wife were relocated just down the road into an old timber framed medieval farmstead house on the outskirts of Stanford-le-Hope, called 'Ivy walls', in Billet Lane. (The building was demolished in the 1950's and a brick built house now stands on the site).
It was here that his novel "The Nigger of the Narcissus" was completed and the Thames River and foreshore were used as the locality of 'Nellie' in his famous novel, "Heart of Darkness". He also wrote "Lagoon" and "Outpost of Progress" while at Stanford-le-Hope. They moved out of the area on the 26th of October 1898 to a house in Kent.

Built in 1882 by Burmeister & Wain of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Originally named the Georg Stage (an iron ship) was a training ship for boys planning careers at sea. For more than 50 year this ship sailed the Baltic sea carrying as many as 80 cadets at a time for 6 month training cruises. In 1905 tragedy struck when she collided with another vessel and sank. 22 boys were lost.
The ship was raised and repaired.
1934 she was bought and renamed The Joseph Conrad and continued to serve s a training ship. She also made a 2 year cruise around the world.
Later she was sold and converted to a luxury yacht but after only 3 years the ship was donated to the U.S. Maritime Commission.
1947 President Harry Truman signed an act of congress giving the Conrad to the Mystic Seaport Museum.
Penguin First edition published as a Modern Classic in 1974.

The square rigger, Joseph Conrad, is flying some canvas. Gotta do something about that.
The ship was built in Copenhagen in 1882 and named the Georg Stage. It was used to train boys for the Danish merchant service. It was purchased in 1934, renamed the Joseph Conrad, and sailed under the British flag. Today it is still used as a training ship at Mystic Seaport.

Joseph Conrad is an iron-hulled sailing ship, originally launched as Georg Stage in 1882 and used to train sailors in Denmark. After sailing around the world as a private yacht in 1934 she served as a training ship in the United States, and is now a museum ship at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.
Australian sailor and author Alan Villiers saved Georg Stage from the scrappers and renamed the ship in honor of famed sea author Joseph Conrad. Villiers planned a circumnavigation with a crew of mostly boys.Joseph Conrad sailed from Ipswich on 22 October 1934, crossed the Atlantic Ocean to New York City, then down to Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, and across the Indian Ocean and through the East Indies. After stops in Sydney, New Zealand, and Tahiti, Joseph Conrad rounded Cape Horn and returned to New York on 16 October 1936, having traveled a total of some 57,000 miles (92,000 km). Wikipedia

Installation built by Living Architecture and designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with the artist Fiona Banner. It is modelled on the Roi des Belges, the steamer on which Joseph Conrad travelled up the River Congo in 1890; the experience providing the basis for Heart of Darkness . The installation was taken down in March 2018.

After traveling for several slow hours by car on winding mountain roads, and spending another hour and a half wandering deep in the woods, we had all but given up hope of finding this orchid (Platanthera integrilabia). Deflated, we began our walk back to our car... but then Neil felt compelled to check "over there". After a brief moment of celebratory elation, and over an hour of photographing them, it was past sunset and well into twilight. We found ourself in the situation of having very little time to find our way out of the woods... the route we had taken was not entirely on trails. Although the available light limited the feel of the photographs I could take, the photographs perfectly capture the time we shared in the woods, seemingly isolated from civilization.

The Joesph Conrad was built in 1882 in Copenhagen and was originally called the Georg Stage. She is 111 feet long and was designed as a training shop for young men wishing to join the Danish Merchant Marine service. Three flags and ove 120 years later, she is now found at Mystic Seaport, in Mystic Connecticut, where she still is used for educational programs and training as well as being open to visitors.
