St. Mary's Lighthouse, near to Whitley Bay on the North East coast.

In this shot you see the causeway which is used to access St. Mary's Island during low tide. The lighthouse ceased operating in 1984 but is now open to the general public. The views from the top of the tower are supposed to be fantastic, this is on my list of things to do.

Access to the Island is restricted due to the tide as the causeway is covered by the sea for around four hours at each high tide. I found this chart on a local website which may be quite handy if you are planning a visit. A notice is posted beside the causeway which gives more exact times of when the causeway will be covered.

I am quite pleased with how this has turned out. Was watching these two people edging closer and closer to the crashing waves. Thought they added a bit of interest to the composition. This is 3 RAW files, +2 0 -2, tonemapped then converted to monochrome in Photoshop, where I used a custom filter to darken the sky. Not much else done apart from a boost in contrast and a levels adjustment.

Opened 1842. Note the metal brackets to support the gantries for the overhead line equipment have been added as electrification proceeds between Edinburgh and Glasgow via Falkirk. Electric trains due to commence at end of 2016.

St. Mary's Lighthouse, north of Whitley Bay on the North East coastline. We aren't short of iconic landmarks in the North East and here is another image from me of the much loved and much photographed lighthouse.

The small rocky tidal island is linked to the mainland by a causeway which is submerged at periods of high tide. While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, St. Mary's is easily accessible when the tide is out.

I was really happy with the colour version of this which I uploaded last weekend, but did a black and white conversion when I was at a loose end the other day and now prefer this to the original. Shot from the rocky outcrop near the St. Mary's Causeway. Five RAW files with exposure adjusted tonemapped in Photomatix and then finished/converted to B&W in CS3
