The John Oliver Cabin was constructed in the early 1820’s by John Oliver and his wife Lucretia. The Oliver's were the first permanent white settlers of Cades Cove, which is now part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Dogwoods blooming and it's a beautiful spring evening in the mountains.
Thanks for viewing.

I am raiding the 2014 archives for this week's Fence Friday shot. The John Oliver Cabin was built in the early 1820’s by John Oliver and his wife, Lurena. It is one of multiple historic structures that are part of the Cade's Cove loop drive, located in the Tennessee portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

We left early to drive down to Hobart (where I took the photos of the racing yachts). The forecast was promising and as we made our way down the highway the mist was just lifting from the mountains in the distance.
In the background is the southern end of Ben Lomond, and in the foreground the vast expanse of plains across the Northern Midlands of Tasmania. There are few trees today, but once (when Aboriginal people lived here) it was a dense forest. In fact we are not far from the hamlet named in the early colonial years as Epping Forest. Almost completely devoid of trees now - sheep grazing land.
Those trees do remind me of John Glover (1767-1849) though. Glover painted a scene not far from this location and looking in the other direction towards the Great Western Tiers range. And there were still plenty of trees then. I'll put a link to his painting below.
The John Marty Homestead near Winnett, Montana. Like so many that were enticed to Montana in the early part of the 20th Century, they came and gave it their all. Living in a country that was still wild and could be brutally cold in the winter and with no neighbors nearby, it was a tough life and many abandoned their homesteads.

As we cruised into Johns Hopkins Inlet this view of the glacier, bathed in brilliant sunshine, took my breath away!
Johns Hopkins Glacier is a 12-mile (19 km) long glacier located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in the U.S. state of Alaska. It begins on the east slopes of Lituya Mountain and Mount Salisbury, and trends east to the head of Johns Hopkins Inlet, 1 mile (1.6 km) southwest of the terminus of Clark Glacier and 79 miles (127 km) northwest of Hoonah. It was named after Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1893 by Harry Fielding Reid.[1] It is one of the only advancing tidewater glaciers of the Fairweather Range.[2] Access to the face of the glacier is limited to the Johns Hopkins Inlet. Tonapah, Nevada
The Tonapah cemetery is full of very descriptive memorials.
The top plaque says:
"John Thomas, 58 died of hemorage (their spelling) of the lungs". It also says England - I believe that means he was born there as many in the cemetery were.
The bottom plaque is even more descriptive: "Dropped dead on the sidewalk in front of the Wells Fargo Express Office".
Done this really nice engagement shoot with Kate&John on the mountains. Started 6am preparing for the shoot, but the weather was raining, foggy, you name it. however, you wont believe our luck, when i met the couple at 10am, the sun was out blue sky-but windy. i think it's a good thing! Yes the grass is wet so my trousers were wet, but we photographers and thats our job.
The song "John Deere Green" by country artist Joe Diffie kept running through my head as I studied this grand old relic.... youtu.be/5QPKpyQacjM
Taken a couple of days ago, an hour or so before it started to snow. The view looks across the Went valley towards the village church and a sixteenth century dwelling.
