".... People search is “the new black” ..."
The data already exists so compiling it is a routine exercise. I wonder how this kind of service could be fooled or played or worse misattributed?
"... Spokeo fits in nicely I think, to answer the so what and offer a more rounded view on prospective candidates. ... It reduces asymetry (sic) of information and reduces the risk of adverse selection by employers ..."
It would do nothing to reduce risk. In fact I'd go further to say that organisations that hire on unverified information are open to risk of future legal action. This is information gathering at its worst. How does more information of dubious quality on a candidate rule them out distinguishing themselves at a given task? I would propose a counter application to the likes of Spokeo - a registry of potential employers. Free along the line of Craigslist. Someone looking for a job can view lists of companies by sectors and geography, rated by what matters to employees and updated.
This is an example of asymmetry.
Companies may have more money but there are more employees than companies. More data thrown at the employee allows greater scrutiny than what I guess most companies would like. A comprehensive list of companies worldwide ranking them by employee friendliness. More information in choice of companies you work for might make you think twice before you apply. The cream of companies rising to the top? For example imagine if you could view a company that you thought might be a good place to work only to find company information:
- In the press current directors are constantly in the news for poor financial results, mismanagement or outright law breaking.
- Ethical status encourage low wages and outsource, made no efforts to improve greenhouse gas emissions
- Enhancement no effort to supply extra training
- Finances public finance information reported against the rest of the market. For startups it might also have the VC's or publicly declared finance as this has implications on how a company behaves.
- Blunders What was the last publicly acknowledged blunder? How was it handled.
- Relations do they have induction? how do they handle various HR issues?
As you imagine if you start to put the spotlight back on companies that employ people a lot of PR companies will be getting anxious calls.
Maybe it might force change?
"... I don't think there's any substitute for a good face-to-face interpersonal interaction to determine a person's character or suitability for a role. ..."
This is one point I agree on. The problem, the best shady characters can fool all but the most thorough of vetting. I'm not sure how software can play a meaningful part in this process?

Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed - Press Release:
Budget 2013 and unemployment
After much speculation Budget 2013 has finally been announced. The Budget does not do enough in two vital areas. It will make the path to work, education and training more difficult for unemployed people and will further undermine the social insurance model, a model that the Minister sees as integral to our social protection system.
As predicted the duration an unemployed person can stay on Jobseekers Benefit has been cut from 12 months to 9 if he or she has made over 260 PRSI contributions. Similarly, if the person has paid less than 260 contributions they will only now have an entitlement to a JB payment for 6 months. So, for example, a person who has worked for 20 years or more and whose partner is working may find themselves cut adrift from any supports from the State after nine months. Yet he or she will be unemployed, see him or herself as unemployed but they will receive no supports from the State to assist them to get back to work.
Yet the State will be taking more PRSI contributions off all workers as anyone earning over €352 per week will pay on everything after: this is a regressive step and will particularly hit low income workers.
Another striking feature of the budget is the cutting of supports for unemployed people undertaking further education and training. This will hit in particular young people for whom Jobseekers Allowance had been cut in the past to encourage them to take up education and training options. The rationale for offering participants a full rate was to support people to re-skill themselves, to improve their chances of securing employment. Yet the cut to the Cost of Education Allowance; the equalisation of a training allowance with a participant’s previous social welfare payment; and a maximum limit of €160 for young people will make it harder for people to go down this path as they will find it unaffordable.
Child Benefit has not only been cut by €10: it has also been cut from €148 for the third child to €130; and from €160 for 4th child+ to €140. The provision of additional childcare or early years supports may be of benefit to some families. However, for many families struggling on a social welfare payment or a low income job this cut in Child Benefit is further exacerbated by the cut in the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance. This payment has been cut from €150 to €100 for children of primary age; and from €250 to €200 for children aged 12+. Yet the cost of education continues to rise. According to the last Consumer Price Index education inflation ran at 6.7% in comparison to a national average of 1.2%.
The INOU is acutely aware of the importance of local and community development in providing important supports and services to unemployed people including the provision of access to employment. At a time when increasing demand on the ground it is disappointing to see further expenditure cuts envisaged for these programmes.
On a positive note the maintenance of the basic social welfare rate, as sought by the INOU, is to be welcomed. As are the additional places in Community Employment, TUS, JobBridge: it is critical important that these supports are meaningful for participants and lead on to decent employment.

West Virginia is one of the most homogenous states in America, not necessarily due to any discriminatory actions in its past. It hasn’t been a major destination for either jobseekers or retirees looking for warmth and geriatric amenities. The mountainous geography, lack of major urban areas, not to mention the circumstances of its birth, all contribute to the 93% Caucasian makeup of the population. But those demographics have not safeguarded it from high rates of poverty, drug-related crime, divorce, poor health and lack of education. Ironically, those are the very statistics we associate with immigrants from inferior cultures on other continents: people we’d like to prevent becoming American citizens.
Evidently, Norwegians are now considered the cream of the crop of gene pools. After they hurled their human exports onto Ellis Island a century ago, Norway is now rated the “Happiest Country” in the world. Perhaps it’s because they ridded themselves of many of the cranky, flawed Norwegians---like my fathers’ family was, still is, and I am---that their Scandinavian society is the envy of the world.
My great-grandparents, who were part of that migration, exemplify the reason why there can never be a formula for predicting success for anyone. They arrived in the late 1890’s and within 15 years had completely imploded as a family. The mother (of seven) was permanently committed to a mental asylum in Chicago, and two years later the alcoholic father was found by his daughter, hanging from a door frame having committed suicide. Their children were dispersed to state adoption agencies or family friends. Several later died of their own alcoholism. None led particularly exemplary lives, and none of their children or grandchildren did, either.
Being white, my great-grandparents’ failure to thrive in America was not seen as an inability to integrate into a new culture, or being from a country of failed culture. Failure is more forgivable when you are part of the majority, where it is less conspicuous. The safety net of our white complexion allows failure itself to be assimilated into our adopted country.
From my observation, intelligence and ambition are not inheritable characteristics. However, education and opportunity can be transferred to our children, just as our US citizenship is, no matter if we deserve it or not. But now we expect immigration policy to import people we did not have to pay to educate, but yet provide us the advantage of their intellect, energy and optimism, coming through the digital Ellis Island as whole, complete, and capable.
Wouldn’t we prefer immigrants who are accustomed to adversity and have the stamina to overcome unimaginable obstacles, like most of our ancestors did? When so many of our own citizens seem to have lost their will to succeed either to drugs, obesity, disillusionment and depression, we might ask why the rest of the world is still trying to be ‘US.’ We should be flattered, but I suspect we are secretly resentful when newcomers achieve more than we can, once they arrive. Human nature creates the assumption that upward mobility is our birthright, a logical process that shouldn’t allow outsiders to leap-frog to the head of the line while we native-born Americans still languish on the sidelines.
We should try to see this country the way our immigrant ancestors did, and remember them when we go about our daily routines, using our indoor plumbing, electric appliances, gym memberships and higher educational systems. What would they think of us now, generations later, on our comfy couches playing video games, sleeping through high school classes, shopping on-line while we’re at work, easily irritated while cruising the drive-thru for a Happy Meal, and taking it all for granted while we complain about life not being as good as it used to be?
Perhaps mine would wonder if they should have stayed in Norway.
Electing to Tackle Unemployment
Unemployment is now a very serious long term employment here in Ireland and the unemployed need all the help and support that they can get. If you are unemployed are if you are about to become redundant I strongly advise that you contact the INOU
Today, the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed launched its Election Manifesto. The manifesto, which has been sent to all prospective TDs and outlines the INOU’s priorities for the next government in three key areas – Jobs, Services for Unemployed People and Social Welfare. The manifesto also poses four key questions for candidates standing in the next election:
1. What will you do to tackle unemployment?
2. Will you reverse the cuts made to Jobseekers Allowance and Benefit?
3. How will you improve services to unemployed people?
4. What will you do to create decent jobs?
Speaking at the launch, INOU Chairperson, Ann Fergus said that ‘it is imperative that tackling unemployment is an absolute priority for the next government. Investment in jobs, in education and training and other supports and programmes for unemployed people is critical if unemployment is to properly addressed. Unemployed people need to be given hope of a chance of a job and a future here in Ireland for themselves and their families.”
“It is also imperative that the incomes of people who rely on social welfare are protected as tens of thousands of people are struggling on a daily basis to make ends meet” Ann concluded.

DPAC & UK Uncut hold ATOS Closing Ceremony - 31.08.2012
As the Grand Finale to a week-long national campaign of protests against French IT company ATOS Origin and its spinoff ATOS Healthcare which carries out the much-criticised Wirk Capability Assessments on behalf of the DWP, which has seen tens of thousands of severely sick and disabled people declared to be "Fit for Work" and thrown off their disability benefits, several hundred activists from DPAC (Disabled People Against Cuts), WinVisible, Disabled Activists' Network, UK Uncut, Right to Work Campaign, Unite the Union, the GMB Union, Occupy London and the National UNion of Students descended on ATOS' London headquarters to carry out what they had billed as the "ATOS Closing Ceremony" - a reference to ATOS' hugely derided sponsorship of the Paralympic Games which is, say the activists, an act of spectatular cynicism by a corporation which is currently contracted by the Cameron government to the tune of £100 million to conduct the much-feared medical assessments without any reference whatsoever to peoples' medical notes of histories.
For two hours the crowd chanted slogans, listened to oral testimonies from people whose lives have been badly affected by ATOS decisions, heard accounts of people driven into such despair by dealing with ATOS that they have comitted suicide, and also heard many accounts of seriously ill people thrown off their benefits by ATOS who have been forced to look for work - having been declared fit for work - and who have died shortly afterwards. The list of people irreperably harmed by ATOS' computer-driven tick-box assessment which cannot possibly take into account the huge range of physical and mental disabilities seems endless.
Following some dogged Freedom of Information requests by two Daily Mirror journalists earlier this year it is now known that an average of 32 sickness or disability benefit claimnants who have been thrown off their benefits by the DWP following an ATOS zero-point rating and placed in the Work-Related Activity Group or who have been put on Jobseeker's Allowance have died shortly afterwards. In many instances relatives of the deceased have claimed that the stress of being treated in such an inhumane way by ATOS contributed to their deaths.
During the protest at Triton Square the 500-strong crowd were entertained by a street theatre performance which saw a fraudulent "ATOS Miracle Cure" booth set up. The "ATOS Reverend" would lay hands on a disabled person and tell them that "by the power of ATOS you are no longer disabled", and sent them through the ATOS Miracle Cure arch, but sadly once through the arch the disabled people realised they had been tricked and they were still, of course, disabled... but worse was to come, as each disabled person was then confronted by an "ATOS Doctor" who stated that because they were now officially no longer disabled and were fit for work they could now be assigned to do their dream jobs, to which end the phoney doctor handed each person a sheet of paper on which was written "100 meter runner", "Bar Tender", "Mountain Climber" and other completely unsuitable job titles.
At around 2:30pm a section of the crowd took off and headed for Westminster where they picketed outside the Department for Work and Pensions, during which an over-agressive action by the police resulted in a disabled man's shoulder being broken as he was knocked off his wheelchair when police shoved protesters into him.

Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, UK.
The Laing Art Gallery was opened in 1904 thanks to an endowment from Alexander Laing, a wine and spirit manufacturer. It not only houses a local collection, but also some important 18/19th century works by John Martin, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edward Burne-Jones, William Holman-Hunt, and Ben Nicholson.
• Seeking Situations (1904) by Ralph Hedley. These Edwardian job seekers are perusing newspaper adverts in the adjacent City Library, now the location of the 1960s dual carriageway John Dobson Street. The bowler hat shows that the wearer was once a foreman, but inactivity has brought poverty. A man in smart clothes looks like a recently unemployed clerk, whilst the woman seeks shop or factory work. Kids left school at twelve.
Ralph Hedley (1848 - 1913) is most famous for his realistic scenes of North East life. He was born in North Yorkshire but later apprenticed in Newcastle from Age 13. His first studio was for wood carving, although he spent much time with etching and painting. His surviving carvings adorn the Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas whilst a database of his paintings can be found at www.ralphhedleyarchive.com

These estimates includes the savings to the exchequer of paying benefits vs tax income, as well as estimated savings relating to health and crime.

Vigil as House of Lords debates Welfare Reform Bill: London, 11.01.2012
Activists from the Zacchaeus 2000 Trust (Z2KT) and Single Mothers Self-Defence (SMSD) lobbied the House of Lords and held a vigil in Old Palace Yard opposite the Lords' Entrance on 11.01.2012 as the House of Lords gave its last reading and debate of the governement's Welfare Reform Bill and Benefit caps before it passes into law. The campaigners are extremely anxious about this bill which, if passed as is, will see hundreds of thousands of children, the sick and the disabled, plunged into inescapable poverty and homelessness from which many of them will never emerge.
The Welfare Reform Bill introduces Universal Credit to replace existing benefits including income-based Jobseeker's Allowance; income-related Employment and Support Allowance; Income Support; Housing Benefit; Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit. The Bill also makes provision for the Personal Independence Payment which will replace the existing Disability Living Allowance for over-16s.
The Zacchaeus 2000 Trust specialises in helping vulnerable debtors to gain justice from unfair systems and campaigns on a wide range of issues surrounding poverty, and the Single Mothers Self-Defence is a network of single mothers campaigning against benefit cuts and policies forcing single mothers on benefits to take on unwaged work.
The protesters were joined by political artist Kaya Mar, who showed his latest painting which portrays Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip on their uppers in a poverty-stricken Britain. The Queen holds two magazines promoting her Diamond Jubilee celebrations this year which will cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds and will lose many more millions of lose work hours to the economy than did the one-day strike on Nov 30th 2011!

The National Recovery Plan 2011-2014 will impact on the unemployed and low wage earners here in Ireland.
In November 2010 the Irish Government published the National Recovery plan, which aims to restore order to the public finances and to bring its deficit in line with the EU target of 3% of economic output by 2015. It involves a budget adjustment of €15 billion (€10 billion in public expenditure cuts and €5billion in taxes) over a four-year period. This will be front loaded in 2011 where measures totaling €6 billion are planned. VAT is to increase to 23% by 2014 and a property tax and domestic water charges are to be introduced.
Today, the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed launched its Election Manifesto. The manifesto, which has been sent to all prospective TDs and outlines the INOU’s priorities for the next government in three key areas – Jobs, Services for Unemployed People and Social Welfare. Workfare protest at Salvation Army International HQ - 18.03.2013
On 18th March 2013 a small group of activists from campaign group Boycott Workfare descended on the Salvation Army International HQ and peacefully protested in the entrance foyer against the organisation's use of unpaid coerced labour supplied - under the threat of up to three years' sanctions and complete loss of all benefits - by the DWP.
The protesters note that the Archbishop of York Dr. John Sentamu said publicly several months ago that Workfare is immoral and should be stopped, and BoycottWorkfare say it is gross hypocrisy that a religious charity claiming to support the oppressed should benefit from coerced and exploited labour, especially when it is proven that the policy of forcing unemployed people to work for nothing directly affects the wages and working hours of the already employed, driving wages down and forcing more people to claim housing benefit and tax credits as they are unable to survive on their reduced wages.
The protesters made great use of several biblical quotes to demonstrate what they claim is the Salvation Army's hypocrisy, especially Jeremiah 22:13 "Woe to him that useth his neighbour's services without wages" and Luke 10:7 "The labourer is worthy of his hire".
Some time after the small number of photojournalists including myself had left the protest a Major from the Salvation Army met the protesters and expressed shock and surprise to hear that the UK branch of the organisation was using workfare labour in Salvation Army charity shops. Explaining that the International organisation has nothning to do with UK employment practices the Major said the protesters were very welcome to stay on the premises of the International headquarters until closing, but also invited them to go to the Salvation Army UK Headquarters in South London to discuss the matter.
The protesters duly accepted the Major's invitation and went to the UK HQ, whereupon they were set upon by members of staff who demanded the protesters hand over their mobile phones and cameras, physically jostled them, then forcibly prevented any protesters from leaving and simultaneously accusing them of trespass. One protester managed to escape the false imprisonment only to be arrested by police, having been falsely accused of assault by Salvation Army UK staff members - none of whom apparently announced they were security staff, as they are supposed to do if they are in fact security staff.
Soon afterwards the police, having assessed the situation and observing that the protesters were being falsely imprisoned realised that the claims made by the Salvation Army staff were completely false, they de-arrested the protester and ordered the Salvation Army staff release the other protesters, having first explained to the Salvation Army employees that false imprisonment is a criminal act.
Because of the extraordinary behaviour meted out to the protesters today Boycott Workfare groups have called for a day of online action against the Salvation Army UK in response to these events. More details can be found at www.boycottworkfare.org
